Jim Arnosky’s illustration of MAN GAVE NAMES TO ALL THE ANIMALS is illustrated with gorgeous, sweeping pictures, displayed in two page spreads. The pictures don’t just show the animals Bob Dylan includes in the song, but a zoological romp through many environment and habitats showing a great collection of God’s creations which man eventually named. The final page of the book includes the names of more than 170 animals that the reader can search for in the pictures.
*
In the book of Genesis, Adam gives “names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals,” but leave it to Bob Dylan to find such a tuneful, humorous, and poetic way to tell us about it.
With all my heart and soul, I love this song. I think it is one of the best songs ever written. This illustration by Eric Puybaret is incredibly beautiful and wonderfully includes the seldom heard introduction that Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg wrote for it.

A lovely comment to this blog reminded of Ella Fitzgerald’s version of OVER THE RAINBOW, which also includes the song introduction. As with everything Ella Fitgerald did, it is just so good:

My one big question is, where is all the music written by Margaret Wise Brown? It is mentioned many times in the interview above, but why are none of her verses published which include her music?
GOODNIGHT SONGS: A CELEBRATION OF THE SEASONS is a gorgeous book. The pictures from the various artists are lush and sweet, dolce and beautiful. The songs on the CD are lovely, too. The singing and musical instrumentation are very well done and the melodies are pretty.
I just hope to heaven they’ll make some stand alone books of the verses and match with them music written by Margaret Wise Brown herself.
This year, I got to pay many visits each to Ashlawn Elementary School, Carlin Springs Elementary School and Timber Lane Elementary School and Tuckahoe Elementary School in the classes of Ms. Anctil (K), Ms. Allen (2), Ms. Andersen (aka Miss Robin, Pre-K), Ms. Campbell (K), Ms. Coffman (3), Ms. Everett (K), Ms. George (1), Mr. Grasso (3), Ms. Harris (K), Ms. Howard (2), Mr. Koppelman (2), Mr. Mitchell (K), Ms. Morgan (K), Ms. Resutek (1), Ms. Robinson (1), Ms Sackett (1), Ms. Slovensky (1), Ms. Strickland (3), and Ms. Trojan (1).

This is Yankee Doodle for Sing Books with Emily. No offense to the original, but I think EVERYONE should be handy, so I adapted some chords to play it on my guitar and slightly altered the words at the end and finished it off w a musical AAA-AAA-MEN.
I frequently think about my creative work. What am I really doing? Is my work with Sing Books anything “new” or in any way original? Does my Sing Books work matter?

Random notes and thoughts until I’m able to put my thoughts together with some clarity:
Everything is a remix: Dylan’s songs, Guthrie’s songs
About 6m04s into the talk, Mark Ronson says, “…they heard something in that music that spoke to them that they instantly wanted to inject themselves into the narrative of that music. They heard it and they wanted to be a part of it…”
About 6m10s into talk, Mark Ronson says, “In music, we take something we love and we build on it.”
This struck a chord with me. This is what I want, to make myself part of the narrative of the music in Illustrated Songs, so that I become it’s voice. I become part of that musical heritage when I sing it, share it, breathe my life into it, give it a voice, and pass it along.
SBWE, my intention, to: Interpreting anew, bringing past to present, oral/music history, musicology, musical heritage, scop, gryo, passing it on, paying it forward…
