Baseball Songs in Singable Picture Books

Posted on: August 30, 2012

Baseball is BIG in the Gleichenhaus Family.  We root for the New York Yankees and our home team the Washington Nationals.  This year (2012) it is exciting being Nationals fans since (at least as I write this on August 10, 2012) the Nationals have the best record in all of Major League Baseball.  We have our fingers crossed for the post season since none of us have ever been to a World Series game and oh, how exciting that would be.  Either way, though, baseball is a great and beautiful game and here are a few songs in Singable Picture Books that celebrate the sport:

A book for the “Not Necessarily Singable” but a testiment to the power of music AND baseball:

Baseball has played an important role in my family’s life.  My husband and I went for our first date to the 1998 Yankees v. Rangers playoff game at Yankee Stadium.  That was a great era for the Yankees, with a team full of notable talents and personalities!  My baseball fan and dear friend James tutored me on some things to know and say during the game.  For one thing, I learned that Bernie Williams (Yankees center fielder) played classical guitar and even recorded an album.  Here are a few examples:

*
Bernie Williams plays “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” in a live performance.  There is a terrific “official” video as well, but I love this for getting to hear him introduce the song before hand and to watch him play for a live audience:

This is the official video for Bernie Williams’ “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”  I like this one, too, for the chance to hear the song AND see some great footage of Bernie Williams in action as a great player for the Yankees:

Here, Bernie Williams plays the National Anthem (Star-Spangled Banner) for a live audience:
