Useful Tunes in the Public Domain

Posted on: July 15, 2012

Lots of tunes “in the public domain” can be very useful for educational purposes and setting your own lyrics to them.  These public domain tunes can include nursery rhymes, folks song, hymns, lullabies, campfire songs, and many other commonly recognized songs that no longer (or never did) command a copyright.

The purpose of this post is to begin consolidating all the research I’ve done so far in compilations of USEFUL TUNES in Singable Picture Books that have used these useful tunes to create parodies or educational content.

Just a page on a notebook? A list? Yes. But to me, it’s much more than that. This list represents 45 minutes of Sing Books joy at Mary Riley Styles Library this morning. I especially loved the chance to try out my new ukulele arrangement for BRING A TORCH JEANNETTE ISABELLA. We also sang favorites like I WANT A HIPPOPOTAMUS FOR CHRISTMAS, SILVER BELLS, and HANUKKAH O HANUKKAH. I played ukulele, kazoo, jingle sticks for many songs and my beloved limberjack horse while we sang Jingle Bells, including the verse with Fanny Bright. Such great fun! Ps: Many Thanks to my daughter Eloise who came and helped me set up, clean up, and hold books when I accompanied with ukulele. And HUGE thanks to the marvelous staff and volunteers at MRSL who make it such a nice place to visit. @littlecitylibrary
A singable gift from my friend Cindy! 12 Days of Christmas. You can decorate and sing as you go! TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS IN ILLUSTRATED SONG https://bit.ly/2SNn44S

SING BOOKS WITH EMILY 12/10/2018 WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS, an Illustrated Song https://bit.ly/2zRigV7 I especially like the Nosy Crow Illustration of this cheerful benedictive holiday jingle. The book is a creative thing with cute movable parts. And they don’t try to do too much with the text. They illustrate just the most recognizable lyrics and let you and the kids move on. I love that they don’t make up new lyrics, as if the standard ones need an upgrade. Another thing this illustration has going for it are the characters as animals, they are cute and don’t exclude any kid’s attributes from finding something to relate to the fun. I assembled some easy ukulele chords into a song sheet that fits this sweet set of lyrics. It’s a free printable in the song’s post.
