Words can mean so many different things depending on how we use them. When you read these words, think about what they mean. What do they mean to YOU. Do they conjure images or memories? What do they make you think?

3/16/2023 1: As a singer and purveyor of Illustrated Song, a huge percentage of my job is engaging with words. I love words. I love the way they sound when articulated, their meanings (alone or combined), and the way they look when written or drawn. I have a sensory quirk where the sensation and activity of drawing words, phrases, quotes, lyrics is deeply satisfying. And sometimes an itch that I absolutely have to scratch. If I have a scrap of blank paper, paper sack, or cardboard from a product box (unless I make a notebook out of it), I like to find a pencil/pen/marker and write words on it. The words might pop into my head or a quote I just heard, a lyric I just sang, a poem I just wrote or read. I have a collection of words in my iPhone notepad. I love to scroll through that then draw one of those.

I have questioned this activity. Is it a waste if time? My daughter Eloise suggested it’s art. Maybe she’s right. Doing tis is an act, an expression/choice/curation/endeavor. Why not? I have been trying lately to do less of questioning myself as an artist and do more of just BEING an artist. I do lots of different things. But all of them are connected.

I’m posting these bc I used to throw most of them away (in the recycle bin, of course). Where would I keep all these? But instead of keeping them or recycling material, I’m going to GIVE THEM AWAY.

I will call them Sing Books with Emily Word Doodles.

I will give them away at Sing Books performances. Kids and their grownups can pick them out of a bag.

I’ll also love to send them to anyone who wants one. If you see one you want, just write me on a comment and dm your address. If I still have it, I’ll send it.

The giving and the taking, choosing, requesting, sending, receiving will be an essential component of the art.
