This page is under construction.

Some kids like to know what plays and musicals (and musical dreams) we share.  This is a list of the plays, musicals, cabarets and special Sing Books with Emily events I’ve gotten to perform in over the years.

EMILY’S PERFORMANCE HISTORY

Emily Leatha Everson Gleichenhaus was born in Germany, grew up a Hoosier, became a New Yorker, married a soldier, started a family in DC, and now calls Arlington, VA home. She went to Indiana University and spent most of her time in the Theatre and Drama Department, performing in many plays and musicals. Favorite roles included Robin in “Godspell,” Mrs. Thompson in “Hunting Cockroaches,” Shy in “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” Emily in “Marriage of Bette and Boo,” Lettie in “Something’s Afoot” and Little Nun in “House of Blue Leaves.” After graduation, Emily enjoyed performing in musicals at Indianapolis Starlight Musicals (Ursula in “Bye Bye Birdie;” Adult Chorus in “Wizard of Oz,” starring Phyllis Diller; Fredrika in “A Little Night Music,” starring Lainie Kazan, Walter Charles, and Dororthy Stanley) and Indiana Repertory Theatre (Della in “Gifts of the Magi” and Lindsay/Mona in “Secret History of the Future”).

Once in NYC, Emily studied at HB Studio, taking vocal performance classes (with the fantastic Michele Grace and the fabulous Noel Katz at the piano) and performing in her first cabaret under the direction of Charles Nelson Reilly and Donna McKechnie (including a comic appearance by Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara).  Emily was also an acting student in Elizabeth Dillon’s master class.

After her move to DC, Emily performed in stage musicals including Jenny in “Three Penny Opera” and as a soloist in a revue of Lerner & Lowe music at the National Institutes of Health.  She soon began to study the fabulous art of Cabaret.  Emily was selected to attend the 2003 Cabaret Conference at Yale University (with an incredible staff of instructors like Amanda McBroom, Tovah Feldshuh, and Julie Wilson) and studied locally with resident and visiting artists that include Wendy Lane Baily, Erv Raible, George Fulginiti-Shakar, Judy Simmons, Rick Jensen, Lina Koutrakos, Amanda McBroomLiz Callaway, Michele BrourmanAnn Hampton Callaway, Alex Rybeck, and Beckie Menzie.

Emily has performed in group and solo cabarets in many venues around DC and Arlington, VA, including Signature Theatre, Atlas Performing Arts Center, H Street Playhouse, Art-O-Matic, Warehouse Theatre, Kennedy Center, and Capital Hill Arts Workshop, Arts Club of Washington, Maggie’s Cabaret, 1409 Playbill Cafe, Black Fox Lounge and Capital Fringe Festival. Emily’s Capital Fringe Festival credits include: “Naked Cabaret, Emotionally That Is,” “Naked Cabaret, Beyond Bare,” “Psycho Cabaret,” “Run Away With Me, a Contemporary Cabaret”).  Emily’s one woman shows include “Let Me Tell You” (Parts I and II), “Domestic Disturbances,” “It’s a Jungle Out There,” and “Oh, What a Beautiful Day: Sing Books with Emily, the Cabaret.”

Emily was nominated for a 2010 Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) “Wammie” in the “Cabaret Artist” category.

Emily is delighted with the success of her program SING BOOKS WITH EMILY in which she sings picture books (Illustrated Songs)with children (their educators and caregivers).  Emily began with a steady gig at Arlington’s Aladdin’s Lamp Children’s Bookstore (now closed) in 2009 and 2010.  She now performs SING BOOKS WITH EMILY visits nearly every school day at schools in Arlington, VA and Washington, DC as well as many visits to public libraries and private events all over the the DC Metro Area and Northern Virginia.  She is proud to have performed SING BOOKS in the 2011 and 2013 and 2014 Reading: A Family Affair events produced by the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia and the 2013 “Tinner Hill Blues Festival,” and many years of summer visits to libraries in Prince William County, VA.

In the school year of 2011-2012, Emily was honored to visit Tuckahoe Elementary School (with occasional visits the Key School in Washington, DC) to Sing Books in -5-8 classes per week.

Emily premiered her new show “Oh, What a Beautiful Day: Sing Books with Emily, the Cabaret” in the June of 2011.  A one woman cabaret show for the whole family, the production of the live performance and CD was supported in part by Arlington County through the Arlington County Commission for Arts and the Cultural Affairs Division of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources.

August 2011, Emily was excited to return to the Kennedy Center to perform in a Staged Reading of the new musical “Kris Kringle, the Musical” as part of the Page to Stage Festival.

In the school year of 2012-2013, Emily was honored to visit Tuckahoe Elementary School (and regular visits to Claremont Elementary School in Arlington and Key School in Washington, DC) to Sing Books in 8-12 classes per week.

In June 2013, Emily was astounded to be honored with public recognition for her Sing Books work with every Kindergarten Class at Tuckahoe Elementary School in the 2012-2013 school year.  In grades Pre-K to 5, Emily performed approximately 275 (lasting 20-45 minutes each) Sing Books visits at Tuckahoe Elementary.

In March and April of 2014, Emily was thrilled to be involved in leading and creating three special events.  In March, Emily created and lead a SINGABLE HIKE in Washington, DC for a local Girl Scout Troop in which the girls and their families sang the STAR SPANGLED BANNER at the Smithsonian Museum of American History (which houses the flag about which the song is written) and then to sang a musical setting of THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.  Also in March of 2014, Emily created and lead a class for HOW TO SING A SONG FOR PERFORMANCE OR JUST FOR FUN.  In April of 2014, Emily created and lead two SINGABLE EXPEDITIONS for Tuckahoe Elementary School for which she wrote a song and taught it to the participants, and connected planting of flowers and garden care and appreciation with a set of Garden related Singable Picture Books for a Garden Sing-Along.

Emily has received multiple grants, awards, and accolades for her work in public schools and libraries. The seeds of Sing Books with Emily were planted in around 2007 and have grown to full bloom since then. Emily continues her Sing Books work to this day, having many thousands of performances to her credit. She sings extensively in classrooms and public libraries, private events, and Farmers Markets. Emily is now applying her Sing Books with Emily Repertoire of Illustrated Songs in other areas, too, including at Art Galleries, Adult Workshops, and English as a Second Language classes.

Emily is featured on four CD recordings, Jill Leger’s live show recording of GOOGLING MY EX; Karin Ringheim’s demo recording of her musical WELCOME TO THE HARD LUCK CAFE; live recording of tribute performance at Maggie’s Cabaret of A NEW SEASON (SONGS FOR SUSAN); and Emily’s one-woman show OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY: SING BOOKS WITH EMILY THE CABARET. And, part of Emily’s mission is to help everyone sing songs with children, so she has posted many scratch recordings on Sing Books with Emily’s SoundCloud page.  Sound players of each individual song are embedded into that song’s post on the the SingBooksWithEmily.wordpress.com blog.
