Lyric Adaptation by ELEG for SBWE
7/10/2014

A friend of mine had an interesting conversion going on Facebook and someone mentioned the song FROGGIE WENT A-COURTIN’.

This reminded me that I bought a frog limberjack for singing the song (for which I also plan to use the horse limberjack I already had)

FROGGIE is a story song, but the story can be repetititve and can progress slowly.  So, as to keep kid’s attention and keep the story moving, I’ve adapted the song to suit my needs. As the folks process allows, I’ve added a couple new lyrics and changed others.

I didn’t want Forggie to be packing a pistol, for example. I prefer that he just wanted to dress up and look nice for Miss Mousie.  I also wanted to condense the conversation with Uncle Rat, have him bless the wedding, and get right to the festivities.  In my version, the Bumblebee comes to play the banjo and the Old Gray Goose cuts loose on the fiddle, and the Ants come for a dance.  I wanted to make sure they go to France for they honeymoon and, as is traditional, for listeners to be told to make up some new story for themselves.

Froggie went a-courtin’ and he did ride, a-huh
Froggie went a-courtin’ and he did ride
All dressed up to show his pride
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

He rode down to Mousie’s door, a-huh
He rode down to Mousie’s door
Where he had often been before
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

He got down upon his knee, a-huh
He got down upon his knee
And said “Miss Mouse will you marry me?”
And she said, “YES-a-huh, fare thee well.”

First to come to the wedding was the Bumblebee, buzz-buzz
First to come to the wedding was the Bumblebee
Who played the banjo on his knee
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

Next to come was the Old Gray Goose, honk-honk
Next to come was the Old Gray Goose
She picked up her fiddle and she cut loose
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

Last to come were the Fancy Ants, step-step
Last to come were the Fancy Ants
Steppin’ ‘round to have a dance
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

The Mouse and Froggie said “I do,” a-huh
The Mouse and Froggie said “I do”
And that’s the end of this old tune
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

If you want any more you can sing it yourself, a-huh
If you want any more you can sing it yourself
Or put this tune back on the shelf
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

Addendum 8/15/2015

For many reasons, this song has not been easy to work one.  For one thing, there are many versions to choose from.  For another thing, though the music is likely ancient, it’s not that catchy of a tune.  The fact is, though, it’s an adorable story which is great fun to sing and there are some fantastic illustrations.  Also, I have a limberjack frog that I can’t wait to use.  I thought it would be perfect to work up my own version and arrangment of FROGGIE WENT A COURTIN’ to sing and play with not just the frog, but the horse limberjack, too, since, as the lyric says, Froggie went a courtin’ and he did ride…

I updated the song a bit for my own purposes for singing while the limberjack horse and frog at the same time.  The version above reflects newest updates which were inspired by A FROG WENT WALKING ON A SUMMER DAY version that I found in LITTLE GOLDEN BOOK NURSERY SONGS.

I thought that my previous version was too long.  Even though the song is a well loved and lovable old folk song, the music is a bit droning in its repetition, so it is probably good to pare the story song to the most essential elements.  The SUMMER DAY version did not mention Uncle Rat and so I decided not to mention him either.  Besides, I like that the decision to get married is made by the mouse. I want her to be her own boss and make her own decisions.  It’s much better this way, IMHO.

In this new version, Froggie gets dressed up, rides over to Mousie’s house and asks her to marry him, she says yes on her own accord, the Bumble Bee arrives at the ceremony, then the Goose and the Ants arrive, then Frog and Mouse say I DO and that’s the end of the story.  If you want any more you can sing it yourself…a-huh.

After much R&D, I’ve arrived at Sing Books with Emily’s Froggie Went a-Courtin’.  With limberjack horse, limberjack frog and dancing board in hand, I cut lose in a couple classes this week and it worked out mighty fine, a lot of fun.
