Music for Living Series, California Department of Education (1958)
Words and Music by Various Artists
Illustrated by Feodor Rojankovsky

This is a 1950’s California state music text book, part of a series that is printed as the California State Series and Music for Living Series.

The water color pictures by Feodor Rojankovsky are absolutely beautiful.  The songs are not particularly interesting on the whole, but those pictures move you though the book, looking at the songs to know more about what is going on in the illustrations.

Song lyrics and printed melodies in this book include:

I am still searching for the difinitive illustration of Jingle Bells, one that would include ALL (and not just some) of the lyrics from the poem.  I really like Miss Fanny Bright (and also “snap we’ll take the lead”), but so far, I’ve found nothing that includes everything.   And it HAS been fun to sing JINGLE BELLS with my limberjack horse.  She really enjoys clippity-clopping along and the kids enjoy her too.

But this is a cute book:

Once I learn and get music made to sing this song, it would be fun to find finger puppets or simple costume items (or maybe just let the kids improvise) and let children in the classes play the parts of the animals to whom the song narrator sings.  Kids PreK-1 would have such fun slithering like a snake, staring like an owl or prowling like a raccoon.

It also would be fun to make up arm movements to represent each animal so that all kids in a visit could act along while we sing.
