DOE A DEER WISHES:

It is great fun to sing this song.  I’ve been using a paired down arrangement.  Eventually, I’d like to create a slightly altered arrangement with new sing along track that includes the music and lyrics for:

When you know the notes to sing
You can sing most anything…

At the same time as I stumbled upon an adorable illustrated rendition of MY FAVORITE THINGS, I also found that QuartoKnows.com had published a beautiful version of the song DO RE ME.  Both of these illustrated songs are part of a series, promisingly called “Broadway Baby.”  I hope QuartoKnows publishes a lot more titles for that series!

The illustrations by Miriam Bos are rendered in gorgeous colors, all done in a retro, Tyrolean feel as they dash around, play, and sing in an alpine setting. The book is charming beyond belief and it is will be great fun to use it for sharing this marvelously sing-alongable ditty from the Great American Songbook.

I especially love that the children are purposefully multiculural.  There are children from many cultural backgrounds in the classrooms I visit and this has made me keenly aware of the images of children depicted in the books I sing.  It’s been difficult to find illustrations in which the children depicted were anything but white.  But with QuartoKnows publications of MY FAVORITE THINGS and DO RE ME, every kid I sing with will be able to find a character in the books with whom they can identify.

DO RE MI, an Illustrated Song

Do Re Mi, an Illustrated Song

https://bit.ly/2O1w0BB

It’s raining cats and dogs this morning in Arlington, VA, so I thought a “re, a drop of golden sun,” might be just the thing. Do Re Mi is an almost universally recognized song even if its musical origin is not known to those signing it.
At the time I decided to song it for kids, there was no illustration for the lyrics. So I made one myself. This book I made isn’t going to win any prizes, but it also doesn’t seem to detract from kids enjoyment singing it. Last year, however, publisher Quarto Knows Jr, published a beautiful illustration of the song that has a different set of lyrics than what I have music for. I can’t wait to use it, but I’ll have to get music made for singing it first.
The song draws kids in with strong visual images and opportunities for participation. It’s easy to hum along with and learning the words comes quickly. This is another song that is deceptively simple, but conveying an interesting introduction to the way Western music works. Ask a few questions and dig a little deeper and you can dive right in to the music history and notation. The link above contains at least one picture book to engage minds curious about where Do Re Mi came from.
