THIS POST IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The school year is winding down and the children have grown so much over the year, ready now to rise to the next grade level.  Singing to Ms. Coffman and Ms. Strickland’s group on 6/5, I had my first in the parade of “last visit of this year” Sing Books performances.  All the visits from 6/9 – 6/12 were last visits with those groups and if any were 3rd graders, my last visit with them ever, children with whom I’ve shared Sing Books over 4 years from Kindergarten through 3rd grade.  I will miss these children.  I hope with all my heart they will carry the songs (and all the wonderful things associated with music and song, like language, art appreciation, beauty, joy) with them through life, and eventually pass the music along.

I visited with the classes of Mr. Mitchell (K), Ms. Sackett (1), Miss Robin (Pre-K), Ms. Anctil (K), Ms. Coffman (3), Ms. Strickland (3), Ms. Morgan (K), Ms. Harris (K), Ms. Allen (2), Ms. Howard (2), Ms. Campbell (K), Ms. Everett (K), Mr. Grasso (3), Mr. Koppelman (2), and Ms. Mason (K) at Carlin Springs Elementary, Tuckahoe Elementary, and Ashlawn Elementary schools.

Just a little note on song order in these posts.  Sometimes I post them alphabetically (ascending or even descending order) and sometimes just at random.  I like to do it this way since the different orders give me new perspectives on the list.  Some of my THE SONGS WE SANG lists included many of the same songs, but the order in which you view or sing things changes the flavors, meaning and understanding.  This is often how I conduct the performances.  They are seemingly free form.  I will fill the bag with songs that seem right for the group and the season and with the songs that the children in this group had requested from the previous visit.  But the songs we sing and in what order depend on a lot of factors including, things the kids ask for, priorities in terms of “we have to sing this today or never” if it is a holiday or for a curriculum enrichment, or just what feels right at the time.

In each visit over the last 2 weeks, we sang a selection of songs from the following list (randomly posted),

How does music get made?  I make music every day and the subject still mystifies me.  Though I mostly make music by performing it, over time, a few tunes have come to my head.  Having not been much educated in musical notation or composition, I’ve written them down as best I can.

The process is fun, though.

First draft with tune only, no rhythms or musical markings yet.  There will be a fermata and rit. at the end, and some kind of ending:

I had a wonderful time visiting the Bull Run Regional Library on 4/15/2015.

It’s been over a month since then, but after a computer melt down, I’m at last ready to write about the fun.

We had a lovely crowd and it was so much fun to meet lots of new friends.

Something so cool to go with THE ELEMENTS SONG that I sooooooo want to learn.  One day I’ll buckle down and do it (will take some time and devotion), but until then, I can keep collecting up great stuff like this:

Sing Books with Emily performance offered on Silent Auction. If you’d like a private performance for kids at your home, school, church or library, then step right on up!

I offered my donation late in the game, not knowing about this until this morning.

Auction closes on Friday, May 15 at 10pm.

This silent auction benefits Arlington VA’s Special Education PTA, and donated in honor of my son Mo who has dyslexia. I’ve given offer to donate a performance each time they have a silent auction, so if you miss this time, there will surely be others!

SBWE Performance Donation Description:

Sing Books with Emily is a live performance program of 30-45 joyous minutes of enriching musical entertainment in which Emily, a professional performer, sings songs that have been illustrated into picture books with music she had specially arranged and recorded to go with the books.

The large repertoire spans all musical genres from Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes and Pop, to Classical and Country, to Educational Songs and Poetry, to Folk, Broadway and the Great American Song Book. Repertoire includes songs like Twinkle Little Star, Puff the Magic Dragon, The Winter Song (by William Shakespeare), Take Me Home Country Roads, Fifty Nifty States, Wynken Blynken and Nod, Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night, My Favorite Things and Teddy Bear’s Picnic.

Performances can be tailored for a groups of children who are all one age (Pre-K to 5th Grade) or for a mixed audience of children of all ages and their care givers. Performances can also be created based on almost any theme (Mother Goose, science, nature, poetry, holidays, for example).

Performances should be in a private or home setting, a classroom, place of worship, or library.

For more information about Emily and her Sing Books program, bookshelves full of Illustrated Songs (linked to informational posts about the songs and books), and an in depth exploration of the Wonderful World of Illustrated Song, visit Sing Books with Emily’s blog: Sing Books with Emily, the Blog

I was just watching a fascinating TED Talk, EVERYTHING IS A REMIX:
http://www.npr.org/2014/06/27/322910178/is-everything-a-remix

Speaker Kirby Ferguson mentions new creative work is the result of “the basic elements of all creativity” when artists, “Copy, Transform, Combine.”

As an example, he sited Woody Guthrie, who said, “The words are the important thing. Don’t worry about the tunes.  Take a tune, sing high when they sing low, sing fast when they sing slow, and you’ve got a new tune.”

One piece of evidence of this process is that Woody Guthrie used the techniques mentioned above to transform the Carter Family’s song WHEN THE WORLD’S ON FIRE  into THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND.
