I had a wonderful time visiting the Bull Run Regional Library on 4/15/2015.

Sing Books with Emily performance offered on Silent Auction. If you’d like a private performance for kids at your home, school, church or library, then step right on up!

I offered my donation late in the game, not knowing about this until this morning.

Auction closes on Friday, May 15 at 10pm.

This silent auction benefits Arlington VA’s Special Education PTA, and donated in honor of my son Mo who has dyslexia. I’ve given offer to donate a performance each time they have a silent auction, so if you miss this time, there will surely be others!

SBWE Performance Donation Description:

Sing Books with Emily is a live performance program of 30-45 joyous minutes of enriching musical entertainment in which Emily, a professional performer, sings songs that have been illustrated into picture books with music she had specially arranged and recorded to go with the books.

The large repertoire spans all musical genres from Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes and Pop, to Classical and Country, to Educational Songs and Poetry, to Folk, Broadway and the Great American Song Book. Repertoire includes songs like Twinkle Little Star, Puff the Magic Dragon, The Winter Song (by William Shakespeare), Take Me Home Country Roads, Fifty Nifty States, Wynken Blynken and Nod, Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night, My Favorite Things and Teddy Bear’s Picnic.

Performances can be tailored for a groups of children who are all one age (Pre-K to 5th Grade) or for a mixed audience of children of all ages and their care givers. Performances can also be created based on almost any theme (Mother Goose, science, nature, poetry, holidays, for example).

Performances should be in a private or home setting, a classroom, place of worship, or library.

For more information about Emily and her Sing Books program, bookshelves full of Illustrated Songs (linked to informational posts about the songs and books), and an in depth exploration of the Wonderful World of Illustrated Song, visit Sing Books with Emily’s blog: Sing Books with Emily, the Blog

I was just watching a fascinating TED Talk, EVERYTHING IS A REMIX:
http://www.npr.org/2014/06/27/322910178/is-everything-a-remix

Speaker Kirby Ferguson mentions new creative work is the result of “the basic elements of all creativity” when artists, “Copy, Transform, Combine.”

As an example, he sited Woody Guthrie, who said, “The words are the important thing. Don’t worry about the tunes.  Take a tune, sing high when they sing low, sing fast when they sing slow, and you’ve got a new tune.”

One piece of evidence of this process is that Woody Guthrie used the techniques mentioned above to transform the Carter Family’s song WHEN THE WORLD’S ON FIRE  into THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND.

Questioning Myself, “Am I Original” After Hearing TED Radio Hour “What Is Original?”
https://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2015/03/23/questioning-myself-am-i-original-after-hearing-ted-radio-hour-what-is-original/

I frequently think about my creative work.  What am I really doing?  Is my work with Sing Books anything “new” or in any way original?  Does my Sing Books work matter?

Having these questions on my mind, I was fascinated to find:
NPR’s TED Radio Hour segment “What Is Original?”
http://www.npr.org/programs/ted-radio-hour/321797073/what-is-original

This TED Hour segment included samples from the following longer talks:

Why Would More Than 500 Artists Sample The Same Song?, a TED Talk by Mark Ronson
http://www.npr.org/2014/06/27/322721353/why-would-more-than-500-artists-sample-the-same-song

**********************
Random notes and thoughts until I’m able to put my thoughts together with some clarity:

  • Everything is a remix:  Dylan’s songs, Guthrie’s songs
  • About 6m04s into the talk, Mark Ronson says, “…they heard something in that music that spoke to them that they instantly wanted to inject themselves into the narrative of that music.  They heard it and they wanted to be a part of it…”
  • About 6m10s into talk, Mark Ronson says, “In music, we take something we love and we build on it.”
  • This struck a chord with me.  This is what I want, to make myself part of the narrative of the music in Illustrated Songs, so that I become it’s voice.  I become part of that musical heritage when I sing it, share it, breathe my life into it, give it a voice, and pass it along.
  • SBWE, my intention, to:  Interpreting anew, bringing past to present, oral/music history, musicology, musical heritage, scop, gryo, passing it on, paying it forward…
