Once I learn and get music made to sing this song, it would be fun to find finger puppets or simple costume items (or maybe just let the kids improvise) and let children in the classes play the parts of the animals to whom the song narrator sings.  Kids PreK-1 would have such fun slithering like a snake, staring like an owl or prowling like a raccoon.

It also would be fun to make up arm movements to represent each animal so that all kids in a visit could act along while we sing.

ISLAND IN THE SUN
Words and Music by Harry Belafonte and Irving Burgie

This is my island in the sun
Where my people have toiled since time begun
I may sail on many a sea
Her shores will always be home to me

Oh, island in the sun
Willed to me by my father’s hand
All my days I will sing in praise
Of your forest, waters,
Your shining sand

As morning breaks
The heaven on high
I lift my heavy load to the sky
Sun comes down with a burning glow
Mingles my sweat with the earth below

Oh, island in the sun
Willed to me by my father’s hand
All my days I will sing in praise
Of your forest, waters,
Your shining sand

I see woman on bended knee
Cutting cane for her family
I see man at the waterside
Casting nets at the surging tide

Oh, island in the sun
Willed to me by my father’s hand
All my days I will sing in praise
Of your forest, waters,
Your shining sand

I hope the day will never come
That I can’t awake to the sound of drum
Never let me miss carnival
With calypso songs philosophical

Oh, island in the sun
Willed to me by my father’s hand
All my days I will sing in praise
Of your forest, waters,
Your shining sand

Using TWINKLE LITTLE STAR to Earn Girl Scout Performer Badge
https://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2015/03/08/using-twinkle-little-star-to-earn-girl-scout-performer-badge/

**********************

You’ll need a standard straight (no boom) microphone stand and microphone to practice with.  The microphone we used was a toy, but the size and shape of a generic mic.

These are notes for what we talked about on how to conduct yourself before, during and after a performance.

BEFORE:  YOUR STATE OF MIND AND BODY

(Have patience, this all takes time, practice and experience)

  • Be grounded, keep your energy relaxed, confident and in your solar plexus
  • Prepare to enter with your mission, to share, to give the gift, to communicate and have a conversation
  • You’ve done the work, have confidence in it as your launch pad
  • Long and tall (lifted hyoid bone, tail bone down), relaxed body, head floating, breath low into belly/lower back and lungs, breath into mask, open and lifted soft palette
  • Always be gracious, but don’t apologize

MOMENT BEFORE STEPPING OUT

  • Take a deep, relaxing, grounding breath.
  • Maybe a focusing/psychological catch phrase

STEPPING OUT

  • Long and tall (lifted hyoid bone, tail bone down), relaxed body, head floating, breath low into belly/lower back and lungs, breath into mask, open and lifted soft palette
  • Enter with your mission to share, to give the gift, to communicate and have a conversation
  • Confident strides, don’t hurry, take your time
  • Engage with audience, confident and welcoming
  • Some sort of friendly/gracious greeting, then a grounding breath, then your patter

MICROPHONE

  • Adjust height using the twisting handle grip (“Rightsy Tightsy, Leftsy Loosey”)
  • Microphone aimed toward your mouth, just below your chin so it does not obscure your face
  • If you are going to hold the mic, take the microphone out of the holder and move the stand out of the way

BEGINNING YOUR SET

  • Engage with audience, confident and welcoming and with your mission (the reason you are singing) in mind
  • Some sort of friendly greeting, then a grounding breath, then your patter
  • As best you can throughout, maintain your posture (long and tall, energy in solar plexus, breathing low). You can always pause in between or during applause to breath low and reset

ENDING YOUR SET

  • A gracious bow (always gracious acknowledgement that they appreciate what you did for them and that you worked hard to be there, no apologies for honest mistakes)
  • When you are finished, put the microphone back in the holder and move it back to original position.  The next person will make his/her own adjustments to the mic stand.
  • Exit with the the same confident strides with which you entered.  Don’t hurry.
