Goodnight Songs: A Celebration of the Seasons

Terrific interview with Amy Gary, who discovered the extraordinary unpublished stash of Margaret Wise Brown works, about MWB’s musical ambitions for her words:
http://music.cbc.ca/#!/blogs/2015/7/The-secret-songs-of-Goodnight-Moon-author-Margaret-Wise-Brown-10-things-you-didnt-know

My one big question is, where is all the music written by Margaret Wise Brown?  It is mentioned many times in the interview above, but why are none of her verses published which include her music?

GOODNIGHT SONGS: A CELEBRATION OF THE SEASONS is a gorgeous book.  The pictures from the various artists are lush and sweet, dolce and beautiful.  The songs on the CD are lovely, too.  The singing and musical instrumentation are very well done and the melodies are pretty.

I just hope to heaven they’ll make some stand alone books of the verses and match with them music written by Margaret Wise Brown herself.

Goodnight Songs
Words by Margaret Wise Brown
Illustrated by 12 Award-Winning Picture book Artists
Music by John Proutt and Emily Gary

I am working on a project to find favorite Singable Picture Books that were published in 2014.  2014 is a disappointing year for the lover (and singer) of illustrated songs.  Not that many  new were published and I spent most of the year creating my own (only marginally acceptable clip art compilations of pictures and words) books for songs I’ve desperately wanted to sing with kids in classrooms, though, in every case, I’ve been delighted with the musical tracks that Paul Raiman has made for me to sing these songs.

GOODNIGHT SONGS is a bright star in the dark night, however.  It is comprised of posthumously discovered manuscripts of songs and verse written by Margaret Wise Brown.  AMAZING!  The songs written by John Proutt and Emily Gary lovingly suit each verse.  The pictures by a constellation of marvelous illustrators are rich in color and deeply enjoyable.

Though, as person who sings illustrated songs to children in classrooms, the book leaves me CRAVING what is not offered.   Unfortunately, though I enjoy this book for it’s pictures and as a collection, I can’t use it in Sing Books visits.  Ideally, each song would get it’s own illustrated book, with a picture for every idea or line in the text so that the child can turn pages and enjoy more pictures and text in smaller chunks.  When singing to children in classes, they would get tired of looking at one single illustration for the whole song.  It would also be terrific for teachers, librarians, and children at home to have a CD which includes a vocal sing-along for each song (like is offered in this book), but ALSO an instrumental track so teachers and children can sing-along themselves. Kids would love to hear their teachers sing the song and children would get so much (confidence, independent learning, out loud singing & reading practice) out of singing THEMSELVES with the songs.

Amy Gary, the editor of the Margaret Wise Brown Estate, who got this collection published, writes in the introduction that she was sorting through a trunk of previously unpublished material by MWB and that “the trunk also contained musical scores of Margaret’s words put to music.”  Margaret Wise Brown’s sister explained that “near the end of her life Margaret had become focused on writing songs for children.  As she listened to children go about their lives, she realized that they made up songs about whatever it was they were doing at the time.  She wanted to capture that spirit in her songs…During what turned out to be her last year, Margaret traveled to France on a book tour.  She was under contract to create songs for a new children’s record company…Her collaborators were some of the best-known singers and songwriters of her day, including Burl Ives and Rosemary Clooney.”

My question is, where are THOSE songs?  Where are books with verse AND music written by Margaret Wise Brown?  Where are the books with songs written by some of the best-known songwriters of MWB’s day and that would have been sung by Burl Ives and Rosemary Clooney?  Oooooo!!!  The very thought of it sends me WAY WAY over the Goodnight Moon!!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, Amy Gary (editor of Margaret Wise Brown Estate) and Sterling Publishing, PLEASE make individual books for each of these songs (especially the ones with music by the “best-known songwriters” of MWB’s day, those which would have been sung by Rosemary Clooney!) and please include a CD with vocal sing-along track AND instrumental.  Doing so would greatly enrich the lives of many children and would give teachers, librarians, and caregivers marvelous musical, literary treats to share.

Joyous, rich hued illustrations from a constellation of illustrative luminaries.  Each one expertly depicting and conveying the story verse.  Each one captivating, loving, and fun to look at.

Lovely book and songs.  The verse by Margaret Wise Brown is accessible but fanciful and imaginative with storytelling both transporting and comforting.  The stories take us to exotic places, over seas.  But the love when we get there is just like what you find at home.  And it is always fun to make the acquaintance of so many delightful animals.  The music reverently matches each song, with enthralling arrangements and instrumentation.  I adore the instruments they use, like mandolin, harmonica, cello, trombone, spoons and thumb piano.  It makes a person want to dance and sing and dream.

The Little Fir Tree
Story by Margaret Wise Brown
Illustrated by Barbara Cooney (?) (1954)

This story incorporates an adapted lyric for “Oh, Christmas Tree.”

About a sick little boy who cannot leave his bed at Christmastime and his father who lovingly finds and digs up a fir tree sapling which he later plants back again where it was found.  The father repeats this process over a number of years so his son can enjoy a Christmas tree and celebrations when family gathers around it to sing,

O Christmas Tree,
O Christmas Tree!
Your greenest branches
Live for me.

It’s a lovely story, made more lovely by the musical tribute.

Delightful website offered photos from Conney’s 1954 illustration of the story, including a page with printed sheet music for,” Here we come a-wassailing…”,

Goodnight Moon
Words by Margaret Wise Brown
Illustrated by Clement Hurd

“Goodnight Moon,” the  classic children’s book, written in 1947, with the “quiet old lady …whispering ‘hush,'” is a bona fide Singable Picture Book.

**********************
GOODNIGHT MOON gets the classical treatment from Glen Roven:

Goodnight Moon (Lullaby for Soprano and Orchestra)
Words by Margaret Wise Brown
Music by Glen Roven
Performed by Lauren Flanigan

You can hear a preview of the operatic “Goodnight Moon”, here:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/goodnight-moon-runaway-bunny/id376373830

If you buy the track, the first 2 minutes and 35 seconds or so is orchestral instrumental music, at which point the Soprano starts singing.  She sings the book (repeating a few phrases) word for word.  You’ve never heard “Goodnight Moon” like this!

MUCH more information (including sound clips, interviews, book and song history) about the composer Glen Roven and his musical compositions for “Runaway Bunny” and “Goodnight Moon,” here:

“Goodnight Moon” was also made into a musical, adapted by Chad Henry.
