Walking in a Winter Wonderland
Words and Music by Felix Bernard and Richard B. Smith
As Sung by Peggy Lee
Illustrated By Tim Hopgood

It’s a special day indeed when a glorious illustration arrives for a beloved song.  WINTER WONDERLAND, in the artful hands of Tim Hopgood, has become an illustrated song to joy over.  I’m smitten and beside myself with excitement about it. Those colors and the family’s wintertime exuberance make singing this song extra fun.

Tim Hopgood’s pictures (from WINTER WONDERLAND and his other fantastically illustrated song WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD) remind me of the art from one of my favorite childhood books, RAGGEDY ANN (A THANK YOU, PLEASE AND I LOVE YOU BOOK), published by Golden Press in 1971. Having made this association, and looking at the books side by side just now, his artwork gives off a special glow of vintage nostalgia.

Tim Hopgood displays some of artwork from this book on his website:

Even more artwork to see on the Macmillan Publisher’s webpage for the book:

This illustration is based on Peggy Lee’s recording.  The YouTube below displays her Christmas Carousel album cover, but the songs really appears on her Christmas with Peggy Lee album.

There is an acceptable karaoke track, HERE, if you’d like to sing it.  To use the karaoke track, you will sing through the whole book to the end, then turn back to second refrain (that’s the picture with snowman and family on the sled) and sing again through the end of the book.  This track extends the song.  Peggy Lee does not go back in her recording.

WALKING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND
Words and Music by Felix Bernard and Richard B. Smith
As Sung by Peggy Lee

Sleigh bells ring, are you listenin’?
In the lane, snow is glistenin’
A beautiful sight, we’re happy tonight
Walkin’ in a winter wonderland

Gone away is the bluebird
Here to stay is a new bird
He’s singing a song as we go along
Walkin’ in a winter wonderland

In the meadow, we can build a snowman
And pretend that he’s a Santa clown
We’ll have lots of fun with Mister Snowman
Till the other kiddies knock him down

When it snows, ain’t it thrillin’?
Though your nose gets a chillin’
We’ll frolic and play the Eskimo way
Walkin’ in a winter wonderland

In the meadow, we can build a snowman
And pretend that he’s a Santa clown
We’ll have lots of fun with Mister Snowman
Until the other kiddies knock him down

Later on, we’ll conspire as we dream by the fire
To face unafraid the plans that we’ve made
Walkin’ in a winter wonderland
Walkin’ and we were talkin’
While we were walkin’ in a winter wonderland

Winter Wonderland (Sleigh Bells Ring, Are You Listening?)

Words by Dick Smith
Music by Felix Bernard
Illustrated by Jacqueline Rogers
1992, ISBN 0-0439-13657-1

This book is so teeny-tiny.  Just 5.5 inches square, and only published in a little paper booklet.  The pictures are beautifully painted.  Whey they didn’t choose to make a full size, hardcover version of this, I do not know.  The format is disappointing, though the rendering is not.

I grew up listening to Johnny Mathis singing this WINTER WONDERLAND

As soon as this intro plays, I’m transported back to my Indiana home, in the house on Knyghton Road in Indianapolis.  Relatives are about to arrive on Christmas Eve.  A fire is in the fireplace and the scent of the Christmas tree, wassail (which my dad is making in the Crock Pot) and my mom’s perfume (Chanel No. 5) are in the air.  The music is coming from a reel to reel tape player.  Excitement, magic, warmth and love are in the air.  I can feel it like it all happened yesterday.

Words by Dick Smith

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening
In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight
We’re happy tonight
Walking in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird
Here to stay is a new bird
He sings a love song
As we go along
Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman
Then pretend that he is Parson Brown
He’ll say, “Are you married”
We’ll say, “No man,
But you can do the job
When you’re in town.”

Later on, we’ll conspire
As we dream by the fire
To face unafraid
The plans that we’ve made
Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman
Then pretend that he’s a circus clown
We’ll have lots of fun with mister snowman
Until the other kiddies knock him down.

When it snows, It’s so thrilling
Though your nose gets a chilling
We’ll frolic and play, the Eskimo way
Walking in a winter wonderland.
