Sing Books with Emily, the Blog

A-Capella-Palooza (no musical accompaniment required)

Posted on: October 8, 2012

Singing with musical accompaniment that I’ve commissioned to fit each book (and my voice, and the song) delights me like nothing else.

But sometimes it is fun not to need of an electronic device for singing a song.  And it is often important when performing, sharing 30 minutes of Sing Books time with a group of children, to construct a set that is rich in color, texture, volume, genre, tempo (etc).  Nobody can enjoy a whole 30 minutes of “block buster” songs.  A person needs variety and an a-capella tune or two strategically placed within a 30 minute set can be just the thing to shift the gears and keep things interesting.

Please enjoy this list of my FAVORITE a-capella sing-along Singable Picture Books (there are others which are quite wonderful, but these are the ones I really love).

It’s an a-capella-palooza.

(This song is very funny…like funny wierd kinda funny…but the kids LOVE it!  The book’s illustrations are terrific and comical and it gets frequent specific requests.  It’s a little weird, though, because the kids never “get” the ending.  Even second graders “Hare today and Goon tomorrow” goes right over their heads.  The book/song excitement has always has an anticlimactic “crickets chirping” kind of ending.  Yet the kids want to hear it every time.  I don’t understand it, but I’ll keep givin’ it a try!)
