I Know and Old Lady Who Swallowed a Dreidel, an Illustrated Song
Posted December 3, 2014on:
This is just SUCH a FANTASTIC Illustrated Song. It’s adorable, fun, funny, and FILLED with art references from which children can explore and get a deeply meaningful lesson in art history (see thumbnail images and links to artworks below). It might be fun, too, to explore a little geography, if you look at a map with the children to see where you’d have to go to view each of these masterworks of art.

THINKER ON A ROCK WIKI
I’ve included this because this sculpture, which resides in the National Gallery Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC is one of my very favorite of all works of art. I love its whimsy and reference. It is funny, clever and profound all at once. I’m also including it since I was worried teachers might night appreciate my bringing in a picture of the original THE THINKER, being a naked man and all, though, the sculpture (and its copy, like the one in Philadelphia, sits right out in the open for anyone of any age or sensibility to see). But since THINKER ON A ROCK is a great alternative, I’m including it here and will gleefully share a picture of it with children in classrooms as part of the romp through art history that this book affords.
