SING
Words and Music by Joe Raposo;
Lyrics as performed by the Carpenters

Sing, sing a song
Sing out loud
Sing out strong
Sing of good things, not bad
Sing of happy, not sad.

Sing, sing a song
Make it simple
To last your whole life long
Don’t worry that it’s not good enough
for anyone else to hear
Just sing, sing a song.

Sing, sing a song
Let the world sing along
Sing of love there could be
Sing for you and for me.

Sing, sing a song
Make it simple
To last your whole life long
Don’t worry that it’s not good enough
for anyone else to hear
Just sing, sing a song.

Addendum 6/8/2013

My friend Bart is a teacher and he sent me a delightful happy birthday voicemail of the kids in his class singing a hilarious version of Happy Birthday.  I wanted to thank his class for this delight, so sang them “Sing, Sing a Song” with the arrangement that my friend Paul put together from my list of requests.  What a blessing to have so many talented friends!

I needed my sing-along arrangement for “Sing, Sing a Song” to fit the book illustrated by Mr. Lichtenheld so we could all enjoy singing it in classrooms.  Since Mr. Lichtenheld did such a great job creating a story for his illustrations for the song, I wanted the sing-along arrangement to honor the story.

At the beginning of the book, the story is set up in pictures before the song begins, I thought this would be a good place to sing the song’s la-la’s.  So I asked for 3 sets of “la-la’s” at the beginning.  In the book, we first see 3 birds in a nest.  Bird 1 finds her tune and flies away, so this first la-la is in the major key.  Bird 2 finds his tune and flies away.  This, too, is in the major key.  Bird 3, though, can’t find a tune and gets frustrated.  This third la-la gets a minor key.  Back to major, though, for the body of the song, because a darling boy comes along toting a guitar and sits right under next of Bird 3.  He sings “Sing, Sing a Song, Sing out loud, Sing out strong…” and the notes fly up, bolsters Bird 3, she finds her tune and by the end of the song, she’s flying away.  It’s major key happiness all the way.

So now you understand the reason for the la-la’s the way they are, I wanted to share with you to sing “SING” with me, if you happen to have handy the lovely book:

SBWE DAILY SONG 10/18/2018 SING BOOKS WITH EMILY 10/18/2018 DO YOUR EARS HANG LOW (as Illustrated by Jenny Cooper), an Illustrated Song https://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2018/10/18/do-your-ears-hang-low-as-illustrated-by-jenny-cooper/ BITLY LINK https://bit.ly/2QXVS2o DESCRIPTION I LOVE this illustration of DO YOUR EARS HANG LOW.  I acquired it in 2018 and it sat on the shelf for a long time before I was able to really look at it, document it, and decide how to use it. This will certainly be the illustration that I use for singing the song.  There are 4 verses in this, each one as enjoyable as the next. And the pictures, all with animals, are simultaneously sensitive and hilarious.  These pictures have a great sense of humor without making fun of the animals. SBWE DAILY SONG 10/17/2018 SING BOOKS WITH EMILY 10/17/2018 LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH, an Illustrated Song https://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2011/10/18/let-there-be-peace-on-earth-a-singable-picture- book/ BITLY LINK https://bit.ly/2COTx6L LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH is an important song. It's a prayer and a call to action. Sometimes we hope for things to get better, but this song reminds us that if things are going to get better, it's up to each one of us to take an active role in making that happen. Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. I have arranged this song for my own use and you can find a song sheet with ukulele or guitar chords in the Sing Books with Emily blog link above that is dedicated to this illustrated song. I have tried to simplify this song to make it less of an oversung anthem and make it more of an easy to sing folk song. This song can be sweet hearted and simple. Let's sing it together and remember that if we are to have a more peaceful world, country, and community, we've got to let peace flourish in our own hearts first. A special shout of thank you to teacher Ms. Chloe Yazdani for the wonderful gift of the lazer cut PEACE earrings. The perfect accessory for this song! SING BOOKS WITH EMILY 10/15/2018 THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN TOSSED UP IN A BASKET, an Illustrated Song https://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2014/09/03/there-was-an-old-woman-tossed-up-in-a-basket-a-singable-mother-goose-nursery-rhyme/ BITLY LINK https://bit.ly/2PBl3aL THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN TOSSED UP IN A BASKET is still one of my favorite rhymes to sing. I love that Old Woman. I love that she flies up to the sky with a job to do, that she earnestly answers your question, and she invites us to come along with her. And I love that she is a witch. A good witch. This is one of the first rhymes that I wanted to sing, found a recording for, adapted the tune to my own liking, and developed my own chords for accompanying the singing. I was proud of my tiny achievement and I still enjoy sharing the results. There was not an individual illustration for this Old Woman, but there were may single page treatments in compilations of rhymes. So I picked my favorite ones to make a serviceable book to use for singing this little gem to kids.
