May 4, 2015, May the fourth be with you Ms. Godwin!

This post is dedicated to Tuckahoe Elementary School 5th Grade teacher, Ms. Godwin, for Teacher Appreciation Week 2015.

Original Post, published 3/13/2015, was purposefully cagey so the surprise would not be ruined for Ms. Godwin.  It includes resources for kids to learn TO MS. GODWIN WITH LOVE, an adaptation of the theme song to the movie TO SIR WITH LOVE.

Our wonderful room parent Ms. Stultz suggested that it would be great if the kids could surprise Ms. Godwin with a song to kick off Teacher Appreciation Week, and she suggested that the theme from TO SIR WITH LOVE would be a good one.

I set to work getting the musical practice materials together (posted below for nostalgia) and learning the song myself.  Ms. Stultz distributed all the learning materials and communications to the children and their families and organized two rehearsals so the kids could practice singing the song.  We told the kids to sing with love and gratitude.

They did and it was lovely.  A special tribute to a wonderful teacher, Ms. Godwin.

GS junior musician badge
TWINKLE LITTLE STAR (and MANY SONGS, ONE TWINKLY TUNE) to Earn Girl Scout Junior Musician Badge
Activity Set Developed by Emily Leatha Everson Gleichenhaus for SBWE
A set of activities for anyone, anywhere, of any age.  Explore 300 years of TWINKLY history, then explore song performance techniques and activities singing TWINKLE LITTLE STAR to begin learning the art and craft of singing a song for performance or just for fun.

**********************

My daughter is in Girl Scout Troop 2863 and we recently earned the Girl Scout Juniors Musician Badge.

I conducted the earning of this badge last year with Troop 2740 with a different set of activities singing songs of historical significance and visiting artifacts directly related to the songs in Washington, DC.

This group of activities specifically relates to the art and craft of singing a song for performance (or just for fun).

For anyone who is conducting a troop of Girl Scout Junior to earn this Musican Badge or for anyone who wants to take a beginner class on HOW TO SING A SONG FOR PERFORMANCE OR JUST FOR FUN, this post is for you.

**********************
A FEW NOTES

*
Participants were asked only to come prepared to sing TWINKLE LITTLE STAR.

*
I conducted this class for a troop of Girl Scouts troop, but this technique works for anyone of any age to begin the journey of singing a song for performance or just for fun.

*
Many of the girls were highly reluctant to sing on their own.  Because I wanted the experience to be completely fun, empowering and uplifting, it was easy to adjust activities so all the girls sang together as a group instead of one at a time.

Links below take you to posts with more information on the subjects, especially:

Introduction to TWINKLE LITTLE STAR
The badge requires exploring music around the world and/or through various periods of time.  Seemingly a simple nursery tune, one can travel through nearly 400 years in France, England the the United States just by looking at the origins of TWINKLE LITTLE STAR. For links to more comprehensive study and the section “Context of Twinkly Tunes in a Nutshell” to explore this topic, visit the post MANY SONGS, ONE FAMOUS TWINKLY TUNE.

*
Introduction to HOW TO SING A SONG FOR PERFORMANCE
There is a lot one can with what seems like a simple nursery rhyme that everyone knows. It can be a simple little song to sing to goof off or just for fun or it can be a song that means something to the singer with a story to tell which takes the audience on a sweet emotional journey. It just all depends on how one thinks about and approaches it and how one performs it with experience, knowledge, honesty and authenticity.

*
Activity 1: BREAK THE ICE

  • Stand in a circle and sing the song in unison as a group.  Think about the words!
  • Each girl get up one at a time and sing TWINKLE LITTLE STAR.
  • Each girl can make a mental or written note for how she felt about it, what she’d like to work on, what felt good.

*
Activity 2: THE ARTIST’S HOMEWORK

*
Activity 3: ON YOUR FEET, TRY IT AGAIN

  • Each girl sing the song again and note how knowing and discovering more about the song changes how she sings it.

*
Activity 4: PRACTICAL AND MECHANICAL SKILLS

*
Activity 5: PUT IT ALL TOGETHER, KEEP TRYING

**********************
Random Thoughts on the Subject

*
The activities here are geared toward the Girl Scout Juniors and their age group, but the work foundations are the same for anyone of any age.  If a grownup you know is interested in learning how to sing a song, this info will get them started.  I’ve studied and performed professionally (and non professionally) in many places for many years and the foundations for the art and craft of singing a song are the same:  know your material inside and out, master your personal vocal technique (in other words, do the best with what you’ve got…a voice like Barbra Streisand is not necessarily required, though it doesn’t hurt, masterful communication trumps a great voice), connect personally, connect with the audience, keep it simple, be honest and authentic, fly free.

This weekend, I got to see the excellent American Masters documentary about August Wilson:
AUGUST WILSON: THE GROUND ON WHICH I STAND

An actress performed the following short monologue from August Wilson’s play MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM which I found to be informative, inspiring, and thought provoking:

Ma Rainey says:

White folks don’t understand about the blues. They hear it come out, but they don’t know how it got there. They don’t understand that’s life’s way of talking. You don’t sing to feel better. You sing ’cause that’s a way of understanding life… The blues help you get out of bed in the morning. You get up knowing you ain’t alone. There’s something else in the world. Something’s been added by that song. This be an empty world without the blues. I take that emptiness and try to fill it up with something.

I don’t deny that white folks generally cannot grasp the struggles of African Americans. There is undoubtedly a deep rooted, yet often invisible, racism that white people just cannot see or perceive which is experienced by and oppressive to African American people.

However, what she says (what August Wilson has written) about singing can ring true of anyone. Everyone’s life has struggles and those struggles can make us despair. My only disagreement with Ma Rainey here is that one doesn’t sing to feel better. Though this may be true for the reason for singing the blues, I find that singing DOES make one feel better. Much, much better. I find singing and the sharing of song to be transformation and transcendent. The act of singing (alone or with others) elevates the spirit and changes an ordinary moment (maybe full of sadness, frustration or despair) and changes it into something of beauty, joy, wonder. The music fills up the empty space with glory. If I have any understanding of heaven, this is one of the first places I look to find it.

RHODE ISLAND IS FAMOUS FOR YOU

This week, Ms. Howard’s class submitted some nice ideas for new RHODE ISLAND verses

  • Lice comes from A-lice-ka (John Paul)
  • Pie comes from O-pie-O (John Paul)
  • Mangos come from Mangolia (this would be for the international version, by Amy and Heather)
  • Ohio is famous for bukeyes (Madeline)

I have a dream to create a Nursery Rhyme/Mother Goose Sing Along Database.  There are countless Nursery Rhyme/Mother Goose compilations, most illustrated and many with printed musical melodies. And, one can find many sources for the history of these words and tunes.  Many of these tunes are ancient, lovely, engaging and useful.  For example, the tunes can be used to create new songs.

I’ve found it impossible to find beautiful, authentic sing-along instrumentals.

It is amazing that to search for “nursery rhyme, authentic instrumental,” produces nothing good or useful from Google or Amazon.

The instrumental/karaoke sing-alongs available online are just awful.  The digitally produced music with fake sounding drum beats and goofy add-ins or sprays of digital sounding fake angel tones make me want to get sick.  There are some wonderful examples of folks singing and performing selected nursery rhymes for the listener, but none that are instrumental so a child, parent or caregiver can sing-along solo.

One of the children’s performers who gets it right is Raffi.  Raffi never sings down to the children.  He uses real instruments for accompaniment and his arrangements are always beautifully and authentically created.

This is the sort of thing needed for nursery rhymes.  The world needs a database of sing-along accompaniments (maybe even in various keys) played on real instruments and using beautiful and authentic arrangements for each nursery rhyme.
