Sweet Suffolk Owl, A Singable Picture Book Poem

Posted on: November 1, 2010

A few years ago, I got to see a master class conducted by the art-song composer Richard Hundley.  One of the singers sang his musical setting of “Sweet Suffolk Owl.”

I’ve adored that song and that poem ever since.  Turns out, “Sweet Suffolk Owl,” that evocative little poem, has inspired at least one other musical setting.

I love how the woman in this video sings Richard Hundley’s setting.  It may not be the most emotionally expressive performance, but her vocals are nice:

The sheet music for Richard Hundley’s setting of “Sweet Suffolk Owl” is published in,

The poem’s author is Anonymous, but the 17th century English madrigal composer Thomas Vautor set the poem to song in 1619. It was published in a set of multiple part madrigals called “Songs of divers Ayres and Natures of Five and Sixe parts: Apt for Vyols and Voyces in 1619.” Slightly more information, here:

Print this on a richly colored parchment paper for an extra good lookin’ book.  I assembled mine with a back cover (and an extra sheet placed in behind the printed cover) of dark red heavy stock to give the book good structure.  I bound mine with heavy duty staples along the edge.

Sweet Suffolk Owl
Poem by Anonymous (or Thomas Vautor)
Music composed in 1619 by Thomas Vautor
Music composed in 1981 by Richard Hundley

Sweet Suffolk owl, so trimly dight
With feathers, like a lady bright;
Thou sing’st alone, sitting by night,
‘Te whit! Te whoo!’

Thy note that forth so freely rolls
With shrill command the mouse controls;
And sing’st a dirge for dying souls.
‘Te whit! Te whoo!’
