I love singing WHO HAS SEEN THE WIND (an illustrated, singable poem by Christina Rossetti) and playing it on my guitar.

Here’s a beautiful illustration I found by artist Anne Grahame Johnstone:

Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you.
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.

Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I.
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.

WHO HAS SEEN THE WIND,  a haunting, simple, beautiful poem by Christina Rossetti.  It makes me think of those moments at holiday time when the weather outside is frightful, seeing evidence of the cold wind blowing through the trees who bow down their heads, but glad to be inside with the warmth and happy glow of the Christmas tree…

Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)

**********************

Who Has Seen the Wind,” by Christina Rossetti, is a short but evocative poem about the mysterious forces in our world that we cannot see but which are keenly felt.  This poem is probably too short to get its own individual book, but it has been printed and illustrated into many anthologies of children’s poetry, including:

*

Talking Like the Rain: A Read-to-Me Book of Poems
Selected by X.J. Kennedy and Dorothy M. Kennedy
Illustrated by Jane Dyer
(“Who Has Seen the Wind” is printed and illustrated on p. 71)

*

“Who Has Seen the Wind”
has received a few musical settings, but I’ve taken a fancy to a 34 second track by Patsy Biscoe.  The first 7 seconds are taken up by a cheesy verbal intro, but the rest of the track is a truly lovely musical setting and pretty vocal for this sweetly thought provoking poem.

Addendum 1/5/2014

Thanks to my guitar teacher Josh Walker and the Levine School of Music, I’m reaching a couple milestones in playing the guitar.  A while back, I found a traditional tune for WHO HAS SEEN THE WIND and wanted to sing it.  Recently, my guitar teacher helped me to come up with some chords for playing the tune and singing along so I started working on it and tweaking.

My grandmother Ethel May (I call her Gram) lives in an assisted care facility and has lost some of her faculties from a stroke she had a bit over a year ago.  Sometime last year, I began to assemble “Audio Letters” to entertain and communicate with her by using my little Olympus digital recorder to record a couple songs for each letter, plus messages, letters and memories read out loud, readings from the kids and any other audio-fun we could come up with.  This morning, I played and sang WHO HAS SEEN THE WIND for Gram into my little digital recorder and decided I liked the results, though SLOW and primitive as my skills with the guitar still are, better than the a-capella scratch recording I’d made for the tune a while back.  So I uploaded it to my SoundCloud page:

And wrote out the chords for anyone else who might like to play and sing this pretty tune.  I think it’ll be quite nice when my guitar skills improve…it’s such a lovely and haunting little song.

The Lobster Quadrille (and Other Poems for Children)
Edited by Lucy Simon
Illustrated by Susan Bennett

This book, a compilation of eleven of the very best children’s poems, compliments Lucy and Carly Simon’s Album:

http://www.amazon.com/Sing-Songs-Children-Carly-Simon/dp/B001I1SFRA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1268410711&sr=1-1\

I love this collection, made by the Simon Sisters when they were both very young ladies playing these songs in New York City coffee houses.  The songs have an intimate feeling specific to that time and place, with the sisters’ voice complimenting each other, Lucy with her lovely soprano and Carly with her rich alto.

**********************

Poems illustrated and set to music in the book, and on the CD, include:

  • Wynken, Blynken and Nod (Eugene Field)
  • Calico Pie (Edward Lear)
  • The Lamplighter (Robert Louis Stevenson)
  • The Owl and the Pussycat (Edward Lear)
  • Sleep, Baby, Sleep (Traditional Lullaby)
  • The Lamb (William Blake)
  • The Lobster Quadrille (Lewis Carroll)
  • Who Has Seen the Wind (Christina Rossetti)
  • I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)
  • A Red, Red Rose (Robert Burns)

Snowflake photographed by Wilson Bentley

Writing this in February of 2010, I remember some serious snowstorms in my youth.  But never in all my days do I recall a winter storm with snow as deep as what is piled up outside my door in Arlington, VA.  We already had snow on the ground when this storm began.  AND, the weather man says that more snow is on the way later in the week…snow on snow on snow…

All this snow on snow reminds me of Christina Rossetti’s poem “In the Bleak Midwinter.”  A beautiful Christmas poem which can be sung.  Rossetti writes of a winter in which “Snow had fallen, snow on snow, / Snow on snow, /In the bleak mid-winter /Long ago.”

In the Bleak Midwinter
Christina Rossetti
In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him
Nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When He comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty,
Jesus Christ.

Enough for Him, whom cherubim
Worship night and day,
A breastful of milk
And a mangerful of hay;
Enough for Him, whom angels
Fall down before,
The ox and ass and camel
Which adore.

Angels and archangels
May have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim
Thronged the air,
But only His mother
In her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the Beloved
With a kiss.

What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give Him,
Give my heart.

I found the first verse of the poem illustrated is Roger Priddy’s sweet book of Sing-Along Christmas Carols.

Christmas Carols (Priddy Books)

Illustrated by Holly Russell
(This book comes with a sing-along CD with arrangements by Andrew Dodge and sung by Emma Cannon, Gerard Carey, and Andrew Dodge)

My favorite setting of this song is by Gustav Holst (1874-1934) and it can be heard many recordings.

This excellent page for “In the Bleak Midwinter,” features text, midi-files (for piano, organ or bells), and free PDF sheet music for download:

I am writing now in December of 2010.  Nearly a year has passed since I wrote the post about “In the Bleak Midwinter.” It is almost ironic that since then, we experienced the hottest summer ever on record in Washington, DC and yet we are now about to be buried under with snow again.

I have had the marvelous experience this holiday season to be repeatedly made aware of Simple Gifts.  I have re-discovered the song, heard children singing at a nursing home, discovered “Simple Gifts” as the theme of 2010 holiday decorations at the White House, and heard “The Little Drummer Boy” anew in the light of its being a story about a little boy giving the simple best of what he has to offer.  And just now, again, another song, “In the Bleak Midwinter,” presented itself as a Simple Gift.

Like “The Little Drummer Boy,” the story teller in this poem is stuck by profound wonder and seeks to give something worthy of the moment.  The narrator, wishing for something more tangible, gives something ultimately which will last forever, her heart.  I take this to mean she gives her love and her faith.  In this case, the narrator is a Christian, but I think anyone of any faith can take from this that love and BELIEF IN someone else is a gift more precious than anything we can lay our hands on.
