We had a couple of snow days in these two weeks, and I really missed the classes that got snowed out. But I did get to visit the classes of Ms. Howard (2), Ms. Allen (2), Mr. Grasso (3), Mr. Koppelmen (2), Ms. Coffman (3) and Ms. Strickland (3), Ms. Morgan (K), Ms. Anctil (K), Ms. Everett (K), Ms. Campbell (K), Ms. Mason (K) and we had a wonderful time celebrating the holidays and winter songs at Tuckahoe and Claremont Elementary Schools in Arlington, VA.

BIRD LULLABY
by Jack Prelutsky
Robin, jay, sparrow, chat, chickadee, wren,
Mocking bird, meadow lark, humming bird, hen,
Oriole, bunting crow, tanager, thrush,
Bobolink, swallow, are all in a hush.
Starling, swan, whippoorwill, pelican, pigeon,
Bluebird, finch, quail, warbler, woodpecker, wigeon.
None of them now make the tiniest peep,
For like my sweet baby, they’re falling asleep.

A Sing Along Poster for:
BIRD LULLABY, an Illustrated Song
https://bit.ly/2HrXbVG
This is a super special song. It was written as a poem then set to music by former Children’s Poet Laureate Jack Prelutsky.
Most of the beautiful words that comprise this poem are bird names.
I made this poster from images of each of the birds featured in the poem.

In June 2021, I bought a new black carbon fiber ukulele and named her Ethel May in honor of my maternal grandmother. I celebrated this new arrival by singing THE BIRD LULLABY.
BIRD LULLABY, an Illustrated Song
https://bit.ly/2HrXbVG
My new friend Ethel May just arrived. She’s an all black cut out carbon fiber ukulele. I really like the carbon fiber ukuleles because thet are waterproof and emilyproof. And I am not snooty about the sound (though I do quite like it) as some uke enthusiasts might turn up their noses at anything not made out of koa wood.
This black beauty’s name is Ethel May (named for my grandmother). She has come into the family as my little green ukulele Aunt Mary Pickle (who is named for a friend of my other grandmother who long ago told my sister and I to call her Aunt Mary Pickle, which we did do with much delight) is now a permanent part of my cycling kit. I love to take Aunt Mary Pickle (who is a teeny tiny soprano size uke) in my saddle bag for bike rides when I stop to sit on a bench and sing a few songs. AMP told me that’s what she most loves to do. So I went and found Ethel May to do Aunt Mary Pickle’s former duties. Ethel May and I are going to have a wonderful time together.
Let’s keep the arts alive, plant musical seeds of love and joy in our children, and enjoy the community and intellectual building Power of Music.

SING BOOKS WITH EMILY
3/11/2019
BIRD LULLABY, an Illustrated Song
https://bit.ly/2HrXbVG
The Bird Lullaby is both a poem and a song written by former US Children’s Poet Laureate Jack Prelutsky. I read that he spent part of his youth singing in NYC coffee houses. This is not surprising when enjoying the singable and beautiful folksy melody he wrote for his poem called Bird Lullaby. The poem’s lyrics are comprised primarily of the names of birds. I think it is enchanting. I created a “book” for singing the song to kids using pictures of those very birds I found on the Audubon website. My hope is that they will forgive this infringement when they know how much kids and educators and caregivers love to see (and learn) an image of each bird we sing about. The link above takes you to my blog post about this song. It is outfitted with lots of info and links to Jack Prelutsky’s own webpage for this song which offers a free, printable copy of the music.
I also got with Hazel
The Green Ukulele this morning to sing it for you. The video is on Sing Books with Emily’s YouTube page.

December 2013:
The classical radio station was playing beautiful Christmas carols this morning and LO HOW A ROSE E’ER BLOOMING came on just as I was sorting through a small pile of my daughter Eloise’s school papers and this was in the pile:
Lo, how a little rose bloomed in a sketch by Eloise just as I was listening to the song.
I love it when things like that happen. I was inspired to make a sing-along page:

Lyrics vary slightly from source to source, recording to recording, but I like these:
LO HOW A ROSE E’ER BLOOMING
Traditional Words and Music, Anonymous 15th c. German
Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse’s lineage coming, as men of old have sung.
It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter,
When half spent was the night.
Isaiah ’twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind;
Mary we behold it, the Virgin Mother kind.
To show God’s love aright, she bore to us a Savior,
When half spent was the night.
The shepherds heard the story proclaimed by angels bright,
How Christ, the Lord of glory was born on earth this night.
To Bethlehem they sped and in the manger they found Him,
As angel heralds said.
This Flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air,
Dispels with glorious splendor the darkness everywhere;
True man, yet very God, from sin and death He saves us,
And lightens every load.

My friend and teacher Ms. Anctil got a few pictures of me today playing Jingle Bells with jingle bells and my limberjack horse. It was lots of fun to see the kid’s faces when the horse started its trotting jig to the tune of Jingle Bells:

In Praise of Holiday Celebration (with lots of SONG) from Dr. Jean and a Wonderful Teacher Friend

She posted this on her Facebook page:
From one of my favorite educators Dr. Jean: “I know this is a busy time of year for all of you, but you might find an idea or two you can save for 2014. My best advice for the days ahead is to SHUT YOUR DOOR and sing and dance and act like the Common Core doesn’t exist! Your children are not responsible for all the things that are going on in the world of education. They deserve a childhood. They deserve to laugh and play. They deserve some memories of this special season. Take a trip down memory lane and try to recall some of your school experiences. Do you remember a song? Were you in a school program? Did you make gifts for your parents? Did you have a party? Sweet! Now give a little of that to your children!”
