Sing Books with Emily, the Blog

Archive for December 2013

We had a couple of snow days in these two weeks, and I really missed the classes that got snowed out.  But I did get to visit the classes of Ms. Howard (2), Ms. Allen (2), Mr. Grasso (3), Mr. Koppelmen (2), Ms. Coffman (3) and Ms. Strickland (3), Ms. Morgan (K), Ms. Anctil (K), Ms. Everett (K), Ms. Campbell (K), Ms. Mason (K) and we had a wonderful time celebrating the holidays and winter songs at Tuckahoe and Claremont Elementary Schools in Arlington, VA.

by Jack Prelutsky

Robin, jay, sparrow, chat, chickadee, wren,
Mocking bird, meadow lark, humming bird, hen,
Oriole, bunting crow, tanager, thrush,
Bobolink, swallow, are all in a hush.

Starling, swan, whippoorwill, pelican, pigeon,
Bluebird, finch, quail, warbler, woodpecker, wigeon.
None of them now make the tiniest peep,
For like my sweet baby, they’re falling asleep.

BIRD LULLABY, an Illustrated Song
https://bit.ly/2HrXbVG

This is a super special song. It was written as a poem then set to music by former Children’s Poet Laureate Jack Prelutsky.

Most of the beautiful words that comprise this poem are bird names.

I made this poster from images of each of the birds featured in the poem.

In June 2021, I bought a new black carbon fiber ukulele and named her Ethel May in honor of my maternal grandmother. I celebrated this new arrival by singing THE BIRD LULLABY.

BIRD LULLABY, an Illustrated Song
https://bit.ly/2HrXbVG

My new friend Ethel May just arrived. She’s an all black cut out carbon fiber ukulele. I really like the carbon fiber ukuleles because thet are waterproof and emilyproof. And I am not snooty about the sound (though I do quite like it) as some uke enthusiasts might turn up their noses at anything not made out of koa wood.

This black beauty’s name is Ethel May (named for my grandmother). She has come into the family as my little green ukulele Aunt Mary Pickle (who is named for a friend of my other grandmother who long ago told my sister and I to call her Aunt Mary Pickle, which we did do with much delight) is now a permanent part of my cycling kit. I love to take Aunt Mary Pickle (who is a teeny tiny soprano size uke) in my saddle bag for bike rides when I stop to sit on a bench and sing a few songs. AMP told me that’s what she most loves to do. So I went and found Ethel May to do Aunt Mary Pickle’s former duties. Ethel May and I are going to have a wonderful time together.

Let’s keep the arts alive, plant musical seeds of love and joy in our children, and enjoy the community and intellectual building Power of Music.

BIRD LULLABY, an Illustrated Song
https://bit.ly/2HrXbVG

The Bird Lullaby is both a poem and a song written by former US Children’s Poet Laureate Jack Prelutsky. I read that he spent part of his youth singing in NYC coffee houses. This is not surprising when enjoying the singable and beautiful folksy melody he wrote for his poem called Bird Lullaby. The poem’s lyrics are comprised primarily of the names of birds. I think it is enchanting. I created a “book” for singing the song to kids using pictures of those very birds I found on the Audubon website. My hope is that they will forgive this infringement when they know how much kids and educators and caregivers love to see (and learn) an image of each bird we sing about. The link above takes you to my blog post about this song. It is outfitted with lots of info and links to Jack Prelutsky’s own webpage for this song which offers a free, printable copy of the music.

I also got with Hazel
The Green Ukulele this morning to sing it for you. The video is on Sing Books with Emily’s YouTube page.

December 2013:

The classical radio station was playing beautiful Christmas carols this morning and LO HOW A ROSE E’ER BLOOMING came on just as I was sorting through a small pile of my daughter Eloise’s school papers and this was in the pile:

Lo, how a little rose bloomed in a sketch by Eloise just as I was listening to the song.

Lyrics vary slightly from source to source, recording to recording, but I like these:

LO HOW A ROSE E’ER BLOOMING
Traditional Words and Music, Anonymous 15th c. German

Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse’s lineage coming, as men of old have sung.
It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter,
When half spent was the night.

Isaiah ’twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind;
Mary we behold it, the Virgin Mother kind.
To show God’s love aright, she bore to us a Savior,
When half spent was the night.

The shepherds heard the story proclaimed by angels bright,
How Christ, the Lord of glory was born on earth this night.
To Bethlehem they sped and in the manger they found Him,
As angel heralds said.

This Flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air,
Dispels with glorious splendor the darkness everywhere;
True man, yet very God, from sin and death He saves us,
And lightens every load.

My marvelous friend, the singer-songwriter Jill Leger:

christmas again 7 Lewis Gautieri

Jill wrote a musical revue in 2012 and brought it to Washington, DC at Christmastime 2013 and I was a lucky member of the cast.  Jill gave me three amazing solos to sing.  The songs ran the gamut of emotion, two funny and one beautiful and thoughtful, all of them story-driven and gorgeously and intelligently written.

I WANT A KARAOKE MACHINE is an 11 year old girl’s letter to Santa about what she wants most  this Christmas, filled with hilarity, big dreams, and impressions.

I MAKE CHRISTMAS HAPPEN is a mother’s frantic attempt to keep Christmas and herself under control without buckling under the pressure, fueled by just a little hooch, and a chance to mount my own “Vitameatavegamin” routine.

MEADOWBROOK SPRINGS is a jewel of a song, a story and a triumph of the spirit.  I take the train to Arlington, VA to visit Grandpa who resides in an assisted living facility.  It seems hopeless and depressing until Grandpa takes to the Baby Grand out in the Common Room.

Jill also gave me the chance to sing in a hilarious duet, a contest of cooking and wit for the best Christmas Pudding

My other joy was to get to play Rosie, granddaughter of Rudolph.  Rudolph is retiring and Rosie’s going to try and fill his reindeer shoes.  We even got to dance, complete with the Reindeer Hop, Hoofing the Ground, and a real life “Doe Si Doe.”

And those were JUST songs that I got to participate in…there were lots more songs and duets for 4 other cast mates (Jill Leger sang a few of her own songs, Barbara Papendorp, Justin Ritchie, and Andrew Harmon).

A HUGE shout out to Amy Conley who accompanied everyone with expert sensitivity and musicality!

I hope Jill’s show finds its audience and gets played in theatres everywhere.  CHRISTMAS AGAIN?! is a fantastic and easy to produce package for a cabaret room or small theatre.  The songs have heart, humor and intelligence.

THOUGHTS FROM SINGER-SONGWRITER JILL LEGER:

After I produced Christmas Again?! last year in Toronto, I was excited by the idea that here was a show that could be performed year after year in different places and remain relevant and exciting. I didn’t have to make much of a leap to begin pondering ways to bring the show to Washington. DC harbors so many of my favorite spots on earth, not to mention friends whom I love dearly. It’s a beautiful place that has a piece of my heart forever.

With the help of my friend Barbara Papendorp, who would be in the show, I began searching for venues and approaching other talented singers whom I hoped might be interested in participating. Soon, I had a dream-team ensemble and a centrally located venue that seemed perfect. I forwarded videos and sheet music to my team and let the magic begin.

I’d never done a show “long-distance” before, but I think because of the commitment and professionalism of my team, it was imminently manageable. Three hours after I landed at Dulles (and only two days before curtain), we were running material at one of our two rehearsals, and I couldn’t have been more pleased. My cast came through for me in ways I couldn’t even imagine. Emily, I thank you again for all the thought and intelligence informing your choices. They shone through in ways that stunned and delighted me more than I can say. Barbara lent the show humor and pathos with her depictions of a love-addled store clerk and a love-lorn woman attending yet another New Year’s Eve party. Justin Thomas Ritchie has pipes of liquid gold; he is a man on his way up in this business, and hearing him sing my music makes the serotonin flow in my brain! Andrew Harmon was the biggest surprise; I didn’t know him before the show, but he committed himself like no-one’s business and all but stole the show with his cowboy Santa and his retirement-ready Rudolph. He has a part in any of my shows any time. And music director Amy Conley stepped in to tie everything up with a big red bow.

In the end, bringing “Christmas Again?!” to DC was one of the most satisfying, validating, exciting and utterly heartlifting experiences of my whole life. Friends came out to see the show, as well as dozens of people I didn’t know. Everyone seemed to get what I was trying to do and responded precisely the way I was hoping: with laughter and tears.

It’s my hope to package the show as an inexpensive ensemble piece that theater companies could perform around the U.S. and Canada during the holidays. Time after time, people told me that the show finally got them in the holiday spirit, ready for the Christmas season. I think that could be a gift to audiences–now to make it happen!

My friend and teacher Ms. Anctil got a few pictures of me today playing Jingle Bells with jingle bells and my limberjack horse.  It was lots of fun to see the kid’s faces when the horse started its trotting jig to the tune of Jingle Bells:

THANKS A LOT, a song by Raffi, is one of those deceptively simple songs that can be infused and arranged to create something beautiful and simple for a solo singer or something profound and glorious for a congregation.

My friend Justin is the musical director for a church in Washington, DC.  The church has a choir, musicians, soloists and interpretive dancers.  Justin posted pictures of their holiday concert on his Facebook Page and I enjoyed looking through them.

The next morning I woke in the middle of a dream which fused the pictures with THANKS A LOT.  I wrote to Justin, but I sure hope some church sometime can do this.  Or maybe I could arrange it with the school.  It would be nice at Thanksgiving, but could work for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or a Winter Holiday celebration.

My dream for THANKS A LOT (as I told it to Justin, paraphrased).

I woke up in the middle of a dream this morning and it was so real that I thought I’d share…

I looked at the pictures from your church concert the other night. It looked like a wonderful event…and my dream put images from those pictures to make a movie with a lovely song of Thanks by Raffi. It’s a sweet beautiful little song and I don’t think it has to be exclusively for children. I made a book for it to sing with kids at the school who had already learned it from one of their teachers and the children also learned a beautiful sign language part to sing with it. I sing it with the kids with a call and response for “Thanks a Lot” and in my mind, your choir sang “Thanks a lot” in gorgeous uplifted harmony with a response from the congregation. Then a solo voice sang the other parts and someone was there with sign language interpretation, too…and all the while the dancers were also interpreting the words. In my dream is was a beautiful movie, filled with joy and thanks, musical harmony, singing, the band, the choir, the congregation, a solo voice.

She posted this on her Facebook page:

From one of my favorite educators Dr. Jean: “I know this is a busy time of year for all of you, but you might find an idea or two you can save for 2014. My best advice for the days ahead is to SHUT YOUR DOOR and sing and dance and act like the Common Core doesn’t exist! Your children are not responsible for all the things that are going on in the world of education. They deserve a childhood. They deserve to laugh and play. They deserve some memories of this special season. Take a trip down memory lane and try to recall some of your school experiences. Do you remember a song? Were you in a school program? Did you make gifts for your parents? Did you have a party? Sweet! Now give a little of that to your children!”

christmas again poster

Dear Friends!

This coming weekend is a chance to hear some wonderful NEW story driven cabaret style and good old fashioned-like Christmas songs by fabulous Jill Leger, sung by a marvelous cast.

We all hope to see you there:

Sat. 12/14 and Sun 12/15 at 7pm
Black Fox Lounge
1723 CT Ave NW DC
Tix $15 @ door

Ho, ho, noooooo! It’s Christmas! AGAIN!?

Celebrate the stress of the holiday season with an evening of original music in the all-new holiday revue, “Christmas Again!?”

A shopgirl falls for a mall Santa…A tinsel tree and an evergreen tree spar over which one is best…Santa unwinds at his favorite bar…and a frazzled mom wonders if she can keep Christmas afloat for another year. These and other holiday stories told in song combine to create a singularly entertaining show sure to relieve holiday angst.

Starring four of Washington DC’s most talented musical-theatre performers and written by Jill Louise Léger, Christmas Again!? is more exhilarating than that time George Bailey realized he was alive again, and more charming than a decked-out Charlie Brown Christmas tree.

TWO NIGHTS ONLY! O, come all ye faithful!
With Emily Gleichenhaus, Andrew Harmon, Barbara Papendorp, Justin Ritchie. Music and lyrics by Jill Louise Léger. Music direction by Amy Conley. Musical arrangements by Joshua Rich.

December 14 and 15 at 7pm.
Black Fox Lounge, 1723 Connecticut Avenue, NW (two blocks north of Dupont Circle, between R and S Streets). Tickets: $15 at the door.

It was a wonderful week of Sing Books this week with so much to celebrate…remembering Thanksgiving, the last few days of Hanukkah, Christmastime arriving and the chilly delight of winter songs at hand.  This week, we sang with the classes of Ms. Morgan (K), Ms. Campbell (K), Ms. Everett (K), Ms. Anctil (K), Ms. Torpy (4), Ms. Sackett (1), Ms. Shorter (K), Ms. Mason (K).

It was great fun to sing this song accompanied by a string of jingle bells and the clippity clop jigging of my band new LIMBERJACK rhythm instrument!  I used the dancing man this time, but I have ordered a horse limberjack and can’t wait for it to arrive. Such fun!

I was brave this week played my guitar in public for the first time since beginning lessons a couple months ago.  My guitar teacher helped me work out some chords for THE HURON CAROL and it all went better than expected as we played and sang with the sing-along music. Many thanks to those who held the book and turned the pages.  We made sure to notice how this song incorporates the beliefs of native people’s and their way of life in the the nativity story in the song.
