I cannot deny a particular affinity to vintage woodcut illustrations by Ed Emberley.  His 1965 illustrations for YANKEE DOODLE are no exception.  The whole book is a terrific rendition of one of our most beloved American songs.  The book’s illustrations, the lyrics he chose (among many choices), and historical information in the book combine to make a fantastic package.  It’s a marvelous book.

I’m sharing here the page of lyrics and guitar chords that I assembled to share this illustrated song in its entirety with kids in their classrooms.  Doing this offers an opportunity to enjoy many verses that are not often sung and to explore the history of these lyrics and the song as a whole.

YANKEE DOODLE in LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BIG WOODS by Laura Ingalls Wilder

YANKEE DOODLE is the first song printed (of at least 127 songs) in “Little House in the Big Woods,” the first in the the Little House series of books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  Many are folk songs and hymns of the time and in the books, most of the songs are played by Pa on his fiddle.  Laura often gives just a few of the lyrics as a memory from a scene in the book.

YANKEE DOODLE appears on p. 36-38 of my paperback copy of the book, with these lyrics:

YANKEE DOODLE
Traditional Words and Tune

Yankee Doodle went to town,
He wore his striped trousies,
He swore he couldn’t see the town,
There was so many houses.

And there he saw some great big guns,
Big as a log of maple,
And every time they turned ’em round,
It took two yoke of cattle.

And every time they fired ’em off,
It took a horn of power,
It made a noise like father’s gun,
Only a nation louder.

And I’ll sing Yankee Doodle-de-do,
And I’ll sing Yankee Doodle,
And I’ll sing Yankee Doodle-de-do,
And I’ll sing Yankee Doodle!

A little Patriotic Gift to USA from Sing Books with Emily on Independence Day 2014

My children both went to Tuckahoe Elementary School in the 4th grade and participated in the wonderful event (the day to which most of the 4th grade at Tuckahoe leads up to) known as COLONIAL DAY.  A section of the celebration is devoted to songs of the period.  They learn a verse to YANKEE DOODLE that is not usually sung.

I’ve adapted it slightly and made a poster:

In Seventeen-hundred Seventy-six
On the Fourth Day of July
Our Independence we declared
In the fight for liberty

Yankee Doodle keep it up
Yankee Doodle Dandy
Mind the music and the step
And let us all be handy

A note form Emily on a lyric in the classic patriotic ditty (and why Emily changed it),

I love the song YANKEE DOODLE and most of what it stands for, but that lyric “let the girls be handy,” has always bothered me.  When I sing the song with children in classrooms and libraries, I let the children come up with other ideas for who should also be handy (since I believe EVERYONE should be handy).  I suggest:  Dads, Moms, Teachers, Sisters, Brothers, Boys, etc.

In this case, I decided to change the lyric to “LET US ALL BE HANDY.”  That pretty well covers it and I like it much better.

On Memorial Day @mccluskey8565 and I went to see George Washington’s Boyhood home, Ferry Farm in Fredericksburg, VA. Work continues on the site but archaeologists found the foundations of the house and rebuilt it according to written descriptions. Wyatt was a terrific guide with lots of information and stories. It was a great day!

A highlight for me was the mud thrushes working hard to build a nest on the house’s back porch. They were not pleased with us standing there impeding their progress!

There are surprisingly few songs about (or that mention) George Washington, but there are a few:

I made a poster with the Declaration of Independence Trumbull Portraitto celebrate Independence Day 2014, using the 1776 verse text my daughter learned for her 4th grade Colonial Day.

Since the text is not so easy to read on the first poster, I decided to make a second one so kids can read the text and sing-along:

A Song Sheet (with and without guitar chords) for Steven Kellogg’s illustration of Yankee Doodle

*

Yankee Doodle (Steven Kellogg’s)

Traditional Tune
Words by Edward Bangs
Illustrated by Steven Kellogg

Steven Kellogg’s illustration Yankee Doodle lyrics is wonderful. His pictures are historically detailed, bright, and colorful.  And, as one would expect from Steven Kellogg, the pictures are chock full of mischief and good humor.

This book opens with a brief, but terrific, mini-history of Yankee Doodle as it emerged as a quintessential American Song from the American Revolution. At there end there is a brief bio for Edward Bang who likely, in the 1770s, penned and adapted the lyrics we used today.

I absolutely love how the song embodies America’s creativity, grit, and resilience in taking a weakness and turning it into a strength.

To sing this book and accompany myself on the guitar, I created a song sheet with guitar chords.  For anyone who’d like to have a copy of this full set of lyrics (or to have the lyrics on hand to sing along, maybe if they can’t see the book), I made a sheet that is unburdened with the chords.

One of the things I love about singing, making music for, and exploring Illustrated Songs is that they are an amazing jumping off point for knowledge about history, culture, literacy and so much more.

For example, here is a surprising LOT of history and scholarship to know and understand about the seemingly simple and ubiquitous YANKEE DOODLE.  Everyone knows it, right?  Turns out there is a lot of know about what one thinks one already knows.

I’m writing this in February of 2019 and this article was published by Atlas Obscura in 2016, but it’s fascinating info about vocabulary, cultural understanding, and history encased in one of the little American songs we sing for fun:

Some Additional materials for:
YANKEE DOODLE IN Illustrated Song
https://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2013/01/30/little-house-songs-yankee-doodle/
It’s taken me years to come up with a version of YANKEE DOODLE that suits my needs for Sing Books. But I finally did it.One of the biggest obstacles was simply choosing among the unbelievably large array of options from illustrations, to music, to verses.I found and edited an instrumental track. It included elements I really wanted to sing with, including fifes and drums. This one also includes tuba! I edited it to include 5 verses/choruses and to include an intro and a consistent little instrumental phrase to separate each section. This was a challenge for me using the Audacity program, but the results are satisfying.

My very favorite illustration is the woodcut pictures in Ed Emberly’s 1965 publication. I chose my 4 favorite (of the many) verses and then repeat the first again to make 5. It all fits with the instrumental very nicely.

I had been playing ukulele accompaniment for this song, along with a Sing Along Poster (which I really like, festooned with George Washington on his slapping stallion), but this now thrills me to sing along with fifes and drums which better suits the song origins.

Music in the Emberley illustration has chords in key of G. I can play these chords and this is the same key as the instrumental arrangement I worked on. So, I can always play uke along with the other accompaniment.

Everybody loves to sing that song. It’s catchy, upbeat, and patriotic. Some may not know, though, it has a fascinating backstory and played a role in the American Revolution.
