In Lewis Carroll’s book, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, poor Alice, she is so confused their in Wonderland and can’t quite get the right footing. When Alice is in the strange room in which she lands after falling down the rabbit hole, she begins to have a set of strange experiences. She begins to wonder who she is and if she is who she thinks she is or maybe someone else. She tries to remember something familiar by repeating a well-known nursery rhyme, “Against Idleness and Mischief,” by Isaac Watts. But it comes out all wrong. It’s supposed to begin “How doth the little busy bee.” but instead she recites, “How doth the little crocodile…” and thus we have our little song.

In Disney’s movie, based on Lewis Carroll’s book, things are mixed up even from the book and it is the Caterpillar, sitting atop his mushroom smoking his hooka who recites the crocodile poem:

It is such fun to sing HOW DOTH THE LITTLE CROCODILE, and I like the illustrations below for highlighting the crocodile’s residence in the Nile River, and giving little hints as to where the Nile is…possibly making kids curious to find out more…

Believe it or not, this song was one of Mo’s preferred lullabies for years.

Addendum 7/6/2015
I have to admit that one of my favorite, slightly sinister, little ditties is HOW DOTH THE LITTLE CROCODILE. I’ve previously made sing along sheets with and without guitar chords. In addition, Paul Raimon helped me create a fun little sing along instrumental track for it. I’ve been using laminated prints of the croc found in various compilations of children’s poetry and illustrations of ALICE IN WONDERLAND. Time, though, to put it all together and make a book, using primarily the terrific picture, slightly sinister, of a crocodile and my son Mo made at camp a few years ago:
