THE SPARROW
Words and Music by Jill Leger
The sparrow returned last Sunday
She’d flown over land and sea
Her sparrow friends came visiting Monday
Just dying to hear about her exciting spree
And she told them that her journey ’round the world
Was, simply put, her best vacation yet
Said the sparrow on that Monday
to her little sparrow friends
“You won’t believe the creatures I met!
And it’s a curious thing
In all the world’s locations
Animals convene in such
Amazing congregations!”

I met a flutter of butterflies
A flock of wrens
A gaggle of geese
And a brood of hens
A trace of rabbits
A cloud of gnats
A brace of mallards
A pounce of cats
I was by myself
But who said I felt alone?
Every creature treated me as
One of its own
Every swine was divine
Each giraffe made me laugh
And each leech was a peach
It’s true
But to one and all I’d boast
Of the creatures in my host
Of sparrows
It’s good to be home with you

I met a troubling of hummingbirds
A pod of whales
A barren of mules
And a walk of snails
A group of lemurs
A knot of frogs
A troop of foxes
A drove of hogs
I was by myself
But who said I felt alone?
Every creature treated me as
One of its own
Every steer was a dear
Every eel kept it real
As did each snake and kangaroo
But to one and all I’d boast
Of the creatures in my host
Of sparrows
It’s good to be home with you

I leapt with a leap of leopards
And shivered with a shiver of sharks
I charmed with a charm of finches
And ascended with an ascension of larks!
New friends are like silver
But old friends are like gold
Watch me, bright harvest moon
Autumn stars, hear my tune
No matter how far I roam
Watch me as I fly
Fly away home!

A business of ferrets
Almost wore me out
In that company of parrots
I was forced to shout
A train of camels
Was not on time
A sneak of weasels
Committed crime
I was by myself
And I sometimes felt
Alone

Though every creature treated me
As one of its own
Yes, the pigeons were adorable
And the widgeons not too horrible
Every dove was lovey-dovey
As was each grouse in its covey
If those mice had a vice, who knew?

But to one and all I’d boast
Of the creatures in my host
The creatures I love most
My sparrows
It’s great to home with you!
Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.
