The Lollipop Songs
Poems by Rene G. Varlay (and others)
Music by Rene G. Varlay
Recording Sung by Frank Luther
Published in 1962
This marvelously illustrated book comes with a 33 Record (the size of a 45, but with a little hole in the middle) so you can sing along with the songs. I cannot seem to find a recording of this little record online. And, my book’s record skips on side A, so I will try to find a copy with a clean disk so I can make a video of it playing the songs.
My brain, though, keeps writing its own tunes for many of these poems. I will hyperlink the song list titles to posts created for each one as I work on them.
I really cannot say enough about the pictures. They are delightful. Jeanne Owens made line drawings and filled in some of the images with blocks of bright color. Some of the pages brightly colored backgrounds with the black and white pen drawings on top. The book is just so distinctively midcentury modern, a perfect example of the aesthetic of its time.
