WORDS SLIGHTLY ADAPTED BY EMILY

Hippity hop to the barber shop
To buy a stick of candy
One for me and one for you
And one for our friend Mandy

A few thoughts on changing a few of the words that I found:
I kept the name Mandy (as there are some gender specific names in other versions) because it can be a name for a boy or a girl.  I also changed the last line to “And one for OUR FRIEND Mandy.”  I wanted Mandy to be OUR friend (instead of MY friend) since everyone in the circle is a friend.  Or, at the very least, as I head one teacher say, “You don’t have to be friends, but you do have to be friendly.”  I also changed it to read FRIEND (instead of sister or brother) to take out any gender specificity.  Any child can be Our Friend Mandy.

How to play the HIPPITY HOP TO THE BARBER SHOP circle game

Before beginning, Children can get a quick lesson on how to chasse with short steps to the side.

  • Form a circle and hold hands with a child, randomly chosen by the teacher, to be the first Mandy in the middle of the circle.
  • Sing and chasse to the right, facing the middle in a circle (on the next turn chasse to the left):
HIPPITY HOP TO THE BARBER SHOP
TO BUY A STICK OF CANDY
  • Here, everyone stops and looks to the child in the middle and everyone sings:
ONE FOR ME AND ONE FOR YOU
At this time, the child in the middle closes his/her eyes (to make sure the choice is random and no choice is out of favoritism), points to him/herself on “ME,” then randomly to someone in the circle on “YOU”
  • Then the child in the middle (still with eyes tightly shut) randomly points to a second child who will take the next turn as MANDY in the middle while everyone sings:
AND ONE FOR OUR FRIEND MANDY
  •  If the current MANDY points to someone who has already had a turn, the next turn will go to the child who is to the right of the child who was randomly chosen for the 2nd time…and so on, until the circle arrives at a child who has not yet had a turn.  This will ensure that every child who wants to can have a turn in the middle as Mandy.

This is definitely a rhyme for which a tune seems to automatically go with the words. I have never heard this before and a tune immediately came into my head. I sang it, figured out guitar chords, and made a scratch recording of myself singing the tune with guitar to find that it is very similar to other versions you will find elsewhere.

The traditional tune seems to be based on an old folk song “My Aunt Jane”
