The Illustrated Songs We Sang at Reston Regional Library on 3/31/2018

Posted on: April 8, 2018

This visit was a doozie of a romp!  That Saturday was at the end of Spring Break for our kids, so we went to New York City for a few days.

Manhattan 745pm 3 30 2018
New York, New York it’s a wonderful town! The Bronx is up and the Battery’s down…

On 3/31/2018, we woke up in our hotel (that had a spectacular view, see above, of the Midtown Manhattan skyline) at 3am in Hoboken, NJ. We were on the road by 4am and home in Arlington, VA by 8. This gave us enough time to unpack the car while I got a little snack, after which I hopped into the car and drove the 15 miles (usually about 30 minutes door to door) to the library where I arrived with plenty of time to set up, tune the guitar, warm the vocal chords and ready myself to sing with friends.

When I arrived at the library, I was greeted with the wonderful sign in the Children’s Section book nook, set there by Librarian Beth who hosted the event that day:

Life is an adventure.

We had a wonderful time singing songs that kids plucked out of my sing bags.  Kids picked the songs out of the bags and I sang what they handed me.

Here’s what we sang (not listed in any particular order),

SING BOOKS WITH EMILY 1/10/2019 BOTH SIDES NOW, an Illustrated Song https://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2011/03/07/both-sides-now-a-singable-picture-book-and-my-business-with-the-cloud-artwork-at-the-corcoran/ BITLY LINK https://bit.ly/2D175Lk BOTH SIDES NOW, a classic song by the great singer/musician/songwriter Joni Mitchell. It’s such a rich and full song about how we experience life. It’s the illusions I recall, still, truly, about all of it, too. I do a lot of thinking about things. In the end, though, for me, very often, I’m happy to let magical thinking win the day. Just a page on a notebook? A list? Yes. But to me, it’s much more than that. This list represents 45 minutes of Sing Books joy at Mary Riley Styles Library this morning. I especially loved the chance to try out my new ukulele arrangement for BRING A TORCH JEANNETTE ISABELLA. We also sang favorites like I WANT A HIPPOPOTAMUS FOR CHRISTMAS, SILVER BELLS, and HANUKKAH O HANUKKAH. I played ukulele, kazoo, jingle sticks for many songs and my beloved limberjack horse while we sang Jingle Bells, including the verse with Fanny Bright. Such great fun! Ps: Many Thanks to my daughter Eloise who came and helped me set up, clean up, and hold books when I accompanied with ukulele. And HUGE thanks to the marvelous staff and volunteers at MRSL who make it such a nice place to visit. @littlecitylibrary
