This extended version of the rhyme comes with lovely downloadable sing along and instrumental.  It’s long and slow, though, so, for the purposes of classrooms, I’m going to accompany myself on guitar to sing it and ask for a volunteer to hold the book turn the pages.  My song sheet with easy guitar chords is below.

I love the new words that Megan Borgert-Spaniol wrote for this rhyme.  She creates lots of interesting opposites for the little birds (big/small, near/far, slow/fast) to fly around about. It makes for a fun way to introduce concept of opposites to little ones.  The pictures are particularly sweet, with wispy strokes and painted in pretty wintertime colors.

The first page of the book describes blackbirds and how they are known for their beautiful birdsong.  The vocal and instrumental tracks that come with the book have the beautiful the blackbird song in as part of the arrangement. Since I determined to accompany myself, I wanted to find a way for children to hear the blackbird’s song.  First I thought to find a whistle.  All these were a little expensive and the ones from my preliminary search did not include a sample of the sound.  So I thought to maybe find an app for my iPhone that would play the real thing.  After some reading up and deliberation (some are expensive and have advanced capabilities for serious birders), I decided on an app by Chirp! for just $3.99.  I got the USA+ app. As soon as it was installed, I typed “blackbird” into the search box.  I got Red-wing Blackbird, Rusty Blackbird, and Yellow-headed.  None of them made the call I was expecting to hear.  Then I remembered that these rhymes usually have their origins somewhere in Europe, mostly in England.  So I went back to the App Store and found the Chirp! for UK birds.  Once installed, blackbird searched, there it was! Really beautiful.

There are many songs about birds my the Sing Books repertoire, so both of these apps (USA and UK birds) will be wonderful tools for enriching my enjoyment of the songs with kids.

Cantata’s video for their book.  I love the beautiful accompaniment, but the song is just too long at 4 minutes.  It’s pretty, though.  And for anyone singing this song for some laptime sing aloud time with their little one, the downloadable sing along or instrumental for this song works perfect.
