Singing Songs and Waking the Dead

Posted on: March 13, 2017

A lovely documentary ABOUT Ken Burns  on PBS the other night. A quote I liked from Meryl Streep, about what the performing arts can do. She is talking in terms of acting in plays, but I think this applies also to the singing of songs:

“Waking the dead. That is exactly what I feel kike when I do a play. You take the words of Chekov or Shakespeare – something written 400 years ago, and make it live, you make it relevant. You filter it through your own understanding of the world, right now. You give the dead a voice.”

And it’s not just the dead, I feel that get a voice, not just resurrecting the words of those who already lived, it’s also CREATION, breathing life into characters, who, otherwise, remain just “ideas.” This is also why there is much value in repeating works. New audiences see them, new creators attach their vision to the works. New life is made and new audiences get access to the thoughts and feelings and ideas that only works of creativity can provide.

The subject reminds me of THE BLUEBIRD with Shirley Temple.  I remember from it the idea that when you speak of loved ones who have died, they come alive again:

This also makes me think of THE GRAVEYARD BOOK (by Neil Gaiman), one of my favorites:
