SILVER BELLS
Words and Music by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans

Silver bells, silver bells
It’s Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, Hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas day

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style
In the air there’s a feeling of Christmas
Children laughing, people passing
Meeting smile after smile
And on every street corner you hear

Silver bells, silver bells
It’s Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, Hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas day

Strings of street lights, even stoplights
Blinkin’ bright red and green
As the shoppers rush home with their treasures
Hear the snow crunch, see the kids bunch
This is Santa’s big day
And above all this bustle you hear

Silver bells, silver bells
It’s Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, Hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas day

NOTES FROM EMILY

*
I have the book outfitted with 3 sets of hand held jingle bells and ask for volunteers to ring them while we sing.  It’s a great opportunity to introduce the waltz to children.  The song is written in 3/4 time and a waltz step can easily be danced to the beat of this beautiful song.  When they jingle the bells, I tell them to follow the beats they hear in the song with a strong jingle on the first beat and two lighter bests on the second and third.  I also tell them not to worry if they don’t get it right, but it is fun to try, and to listen for these details in the songs they hear, since these are the things that make the songs beautiful and unique.

To me, this is a quintessential New York song.  Growing up in Indiana, I always loved it, because it was on all the Christmas albums my parents played.  But when I moved to New York and experienced the marvelous joys of Christmastime there, this song really made sense to me and became ever more special.

I’m particularly interested to read that this song was originally written for a Bob Hope movie, THE LEMON DROP KID
