SBWE Song Set: Three For The Sound of Music

Posted on: June 7, 2016

As an artist performing every day for children at schools and libraries, I’m always thinking of how songs can be combined in meaningful ways.  Creating sets of songs gives context, opens up discussion and enriches understanding of subject matter and the cultural significance of the songs.

In this case, I’m thinking about Rodgers and Hammerstein’s marvelous musical, The Sound of Music.  I call this set, THREE FOR THE SOUND OF MUSIC

I love the way that the constituent songs in the Sound of Music score form part of a larger whole. These songs are part of a theatre musical and tell a story. I like to think of how Sound of Music can be used as a most excellent introduction to storytelling in music – even before young children hear Peter and the Wolf or The Four Seasons for the first time.

Yes. I agree. This is precisely my purpose in singing these song with the kids. Since P&W is spoken word w orchestra and 4 seasons pure music, those are not in my repertoire, though it might be an interesting exercise to fit original poetry to excerpts of the Vivaldi.
