The More We Get Together, an Illustrated Song

The value of a song like this is that almost everyone knows it without even knowing that they know it. Singing a well known song together creates a shared, community experience, even when the song is as simple and sweet as this one.
And children love it when they can sing, and share with each other, something they know. It gives them joy and confidence.

The little song, THE MORE WE GET TOGETHER, fits nicely into the Kindness is Contagious theme, that I’m working to share with children. I didn’t have accompaniment for singing it, so I decided such a sweet little song was perfect for accompanying myself. To this end, I created these little song sheets, that I hope you will enjoy, too.

A Sing Along Poster for:
The More We Get Together, an Illustrated Song
I set out to make a poster for this song and thought about what to do for artwork. What popped into my mind was that late 1800s painting by William Holbrook of bears having a dance festival in the woods.
Thanks to WikiMedia (yes, I make a yearly donation as I use Wikipedia almost daily), I found a nice resolution digital picture and punched it up a little using Pixlr.
It’s a great image for extolling the virtues and benefits of getting together. Using other delightful images from my collection of bears doing things, I added verses to celebrate dancing and singing together, too.

Cantata Learning provides beautifully produced musical tracks (both vocal and instrumental) to accompany their books. These are perfect for a kid enjoying the book solo or sitting on a parent’s lap.
These accompaniments don’t always work very well for my purposes in sharing these songs with a classes of kids sitting before me on the carpet. In these situations, I have to absolutely keep things moving. And, though beautifully produced, with terrific vocals and arrangements, often, the length of these arrangements (with lots of instrumental breaks, for example, between verses), the instrumentals are too long to hold the attention of 50 plus kids. And, besides keeping things moving, experience has taught me when to keep things simple, too. To this end, I assembled the words with some simple guitar chords. I can play the whole song through and kids can sing along. This is a terrific little song to remind kids about working together and being kind to one another, and this simple song sheet with guitar chords allows us to enjoy that theme, sing along, keep things moving, and keep it all nice and simple.
