Ostentation of a Peacock, for Sing Books with Emily Songbook Series

Posted on: February 1, 2016

A few months ago, Ms. Eib, a wonderful first grade teacher at Timber Lane, gave me a gorgeous peacock puppet.  Excitedly, I started to search for a peacock song to sing with it. I could not find any, not in English, anyway.

I was preparing a SBWE Songbook Series page the other day for FRERE JACQUES/BROTHER JOHN and a little verse popped in my head for the peacock.

A person’s got to start somewhere.  I thought this might be a cute teeny tiny song for the Songbook Series.  With luck, as time goes on, new songs will appear or something fun will show up on bookstore shelves.

This little song is for Ms. Eib.  It is called OSTENTATION OF A PEACOCK for the Peacock group name (an Ostentation of Peacocks) that appears in a couple of my books of group names.

I think this would work mighty fine as a round.  We should try it out!

Addendum, 2/4/2015

At the suggestion of my friend Marianne, I just began reading BIG MAGIC (by Elizabeth Gilbert).  Just the first couple pages reveals a gem and a surprise, deeper meaning in this tiny verse about Mr. Peacock.

Ms. Gilbert writes, “So this, I believe is the central question upon which all creative living hinges: Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you?”

The peacock does.  He unfurls his feathers to display his treasures with brazen confidence. Of course, no artist needs to vainly strut like a peacock, but unless one unfurls one’s creativity, the world never gets to enjoy the treasures.

I’m taking this as a kind of “singing,” that peacocks court paramours with sound:
