When we sing The Sparrow we talk about the names of animal groups and how exploring the names of animal groups is a great way to enhance your vocabulary). This artful book explores bird group names like “a stare of owls.”

I’m so excited this just arrived, a carved wood hooting owl whistle.  It’s a great size at 6″ tall and about 3.5″ wide.  I can’t wait for her to hoot before singing the rhyme!

Poetry Speaks to Children

Edited by Elise Paschen
Illustrated by Judy Love, Wendy Rasmussen, Paula Zinngrabe Wendland

The owl in John Hollander’s poem, “Vowel Owl” (printed an illustrated on p. 20) his having trouble with his “Too-whit, Too-whoo.”  Wonderfully, you can speculate on what the problem might be by listening to the author read his poem.  This book comes with a CD featuring readings of the poems by many of the authors and some performers.  John Hollander reads his poem, “Vowel Owl” on Track 13.

Unfortunately, this last poem is not set to music (so far as I know), but it’s always fun to have a mass of supporting materials to enhance enjoyment and knowledge of what can be sung!

**********************

I read that the Tawny Owl, one of the most prevalent in Europe, is the owl depicted in the poem and famous for its call of “te-whit, te-hoo.”

The  Tawny Owl’s calls out “Tu-whit, tu-whoo” in a couple of other selections of verse also.

You will hear the owl’s call in “A Merry Note” (also called “Winter Song”) by Williams Shakespeare, taken from his play “Loves Labour’s Lost,” and it is printed and illustrated on pl 14 of,
