The Songs We Sang During the Tinner Hill Blues Festival at the Mary Riley Styles Library in Falls Church, VA

Posted on: June 10, 2013

I had the most wonderful time sharing a Blues inspired program at the Mary Riley Styles Library in Falls Church, VA for the Tinner Hills Blues Festival.  It was such an honor to be included in the event performances and to communicate with Nikki Graves Henderson of the Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation!  Thank you!  Thanks also to the staff of the Mary Riley Styles Library who made me feel so welcome!

Some wonderful friends stopped by for one or the other of the 2 performances this past Saturday and I got to meet a whole bunch of new friends, too.

We sang these Singable Picture Books in both sessions to create the official program:

I found a wonderful Blues for Kids CD that I LOVE:

kids get the blues too brother yusef

It’s blues alright, but if blues could be joyous and sunny, that’s how I’d describe it.  He makes fabulous blues arrangements for traditional songs that will make hear them with NEW ears and will make you want to hear them again.  I love this album!

I also particularly fell in love with Track 9: Early Sunday Morning on Brother Yusef’s album:

Since we took a little extra time before and after the programs, so we sang a few extra songs for friends arrived early (I don’t like to make the little ones wait before their patience runs out!).  And we were having such fun that we sang a few extra songs from Singable Picture Books at the end of the programs.

Before or after the programs, we sang a selection from these songs:

sing raposo lichtenheld 2
Sing…sing a song
Music and Lyrics by Joe Raposo
Illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld

take me home country roads
Take Me Home, Country Roads

Words and Music by  John Denver, Taffy Nivert and Bill Danoff

ISBN 978-1584690726

Take Me Out to the Ball Game
Words by Jack Norworth
Music by Albert Von Tilzer
Illustrated by Amiko Hirao
Performed by Carly Simon
This edition gets a GOLD STAR for including the FULL song (both verses and chorus) and a fabulous recording of Carly Simon and her delightful arrangement she made for Ken Burn’s documentary Baseball.
