Eloise was reading the book GINGERBREAD BABY (by Jan Brett) to me and she made up this tune (and sang it) for the rhymes that the baby uses to tease those who cannot catch him (or her?).

I really do so love Good King Wenceslas, the song, its story and its origins.  Today is the Feast of St. Stephens.  We can celebrate by singing and doing something good.  It also gives us a chance to peek into spring on this cold, snowy day, since the song’s tune was originally written for a carol praising the flowers of spring…

GOOD KING WENCESLAS
I love this song which was written to the tune of an ancient flower carol and can also function as a short play with 3 characters.  Once you unravel who is saying what, and what is happening, this becomes a wonderful fable, too, fitted lovingly at the end with a satisfying, universal and timely moral.

GOOD KING WENCESLAS
Traditional Tune (Tempus adest floridum)
Words by John M. Neale

(Narrator)
Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the feast of Stephen,
When the snow lay round about,
Deep and crisp and even.
Brightly shown the moon that night,
Though the frost was cruel,
When a poor man came in sight,
Gathering winter fuel.

(King)
Hither, page, and stand by me.
If thou know it telling:
Yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?

(Page)
Sire, he lives a good league hence,
Underneath the mountain,
Right against the forest fence
By Saint Agnes fountain.

(King)
Bring me flesh, and bring me wine.
Bring me pine logs hither.
Thou and I will see him dine
When we bear them thither.

(Narrator)
Page and monarch, forth they went,
Forth they went together
Through the rude wind’s wild lament
And the bitter weather.

(Page)
Sire, the night is darker now,
And the wind blows stronger.
Fails my heart, I know not how.
I can go no longer.

(King)
Mark my footsteps my good page,
Tread thou in them boldly:
Thou shalt find the winter’s rage
Freeze thy blood less coldly.

(Narrator)
In his master’s step he trod,
Where the snow lay dented.
Heat was in the very sod
Which the saint had printed.
Therefore, Christian men, be sure,
Wealth or rank possessing,
Ye who now will bless the poor
Shall yourselves find blessing.

GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN
Today’s the day!  Let us celebrate the day, think of others, and regardless of religious belief, follow the example of Jesus and strive the make the world a better place.

This being a traditional song, almost every version you will encounter is different and most musicians will play, tinker and toy with the tune.  The similarities are strong enough, though, you can find the one that works best for you and go sing it from the mountain tops!

HERE WE COME A-WASSAILING
This carol is such fun to sing.  Many versions abound, with slight variations in lyrics and verse order.  Feel free to pick and choose or move them around.  Just sing and enjoy.  I love that Mel Torme sings the chorus of this carol as a benediction at the end of his “Christmas Song.”

Once you get the tune in your head, this one is a good one for singing a-capella.

This will certainly be the illustration that I use for singing the song.  There are 4 verses in this, each one as enjoyable as the next. And the pictures, all with animals, are simultaneously sensitive and hilarious.  These pictures have a great sense of humor without making fun of the animals. SBWE DAILY SONG 10/17/2018 SING BOOKS WITH EMILY 10/17/2018 LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH, an Illustrated Song https://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2011/10/18/let-there-be-peace-on-earth-a-singable-picture- book/ BITLY LINK https://bit.ly/2COTx6L LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH is an important song. It's a prayer and a call to action. Sometimes we hope for things to get better, but this song reminds us that if things are going to get better, it's up to each one of us to take an active role in making that happen. Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. I have arranged this song for my own use and you can find a song sheet with ukulele or guitar chords in the Sing Books with Emily blog link above that is dedicated to this illustrated song. I have tried to simplify this song to make it less of an oversung anthem and make it more of an easy to sing folk song. This song can be sweet hearted and simple. Let's sing it together and remember that if we are to have a more peaceful world, country, and community, we've got to let peace flourish in our own hearts first. A special shout of thank you to teacher Ms. Chloe Yazdani for the wonderful gift of the lazer cut PEACE earrings. The perfect accessory for this song! I love that Old Woman. I love that she flies up to the sky with a job to do, that she earnestly answers your question, and she invites us to come along with her. And I love that she is a witch. A good witch. This is one of the first rhymes that I wanted to sing, found a recording for, adapted the tune to my own liking, and developed my own chords for accompanying the singing. I was proud of my tiny achievement and I still enjoy sharing the results. There was not an individual illustration for this Old Woman, but there were may single page treatments in compilations of rhymes. So I picked my favorite ones to make a serviceable book to use for singing this little gem to kids.
