My Country Tis of Thee, an Illustrated Song

Posted on: October 1, 2012

Writing this post in August 2012, I’ve been inspired by watching Olympic athletes at medal award ceremonies and hearing national anthems of various countries.  It is exciting that the Americans have done so well.  It’s also exciting that  Team GB has done so well, too, being the host country.  What an achievement for a country with a relatively small population to bring home so many medals.  The national anthem for Great Britain is “God Save the Queen,” of course, but it reminded me that we use the same tune for “My County ‘Tis of Thee,” (a song also knows as “America”).

Marian Anderson sings “My Country “Tis of Thee” in her gorgeous rich soprano during her famous concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial:

*
Mrs. G recommends singing “My Country Tis of Thee,” a-capella in Key of C, begin and end each verse on Middle C
I fiddled around a little with the key and YouTube sing-along videos available (all of which sing the song a big too high for our sweet voiced girls) and have determined that the key of C is a good choice for this song.  Especially if we sing this song a-capella, staring and ending each verse on Middle-C is a good choice.

*
For an instrumental sing-along, this track by Stingray Karaoke is higher (in the Key of F), but it is still singable and it is not too instrumentally cheezy (as are many Karaoke tracks) and played at a thoughtful tempo.  This track accomodates 4 verses of the song. Click HERE to preview or purchase from Amazon.

MY COUNTRY TIS OF THEE
Words by Samuel Francis Smith, 1808-1895
Traditional Tune

My country,’ tis of thee
Sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing
Land where my fathers died
Land of the pilgrims’ pride
From every mountainside let freedom ring.

My native country, thee
Land of the noble free, thy name I love
I love thy rocks and rills
Thy woods and templed hills
My heart with rapture thrills, like that above.

Let music swell the breeze
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom’s song
Let mortal tongues awake
Let all that breathe partake
Let rocks their silence break, the sound prolong.

Our fathers’ God, to thee
Author of liberty, to thee we sing
Long may our land be bright
With freedom’s holy light
Protect us by thy might, great God, our King.

This song seemed like the perfect Girl Scout Song, so I made a lyric sheet for my daughter’s Troop 2740 Girl Scout Songbook:

Another choice by Eloise today, a wonderful patriotic song. This song has important cultural significance for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that this was one of the songs Marian Anderson sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. An important moment in American history. This highlights how exposing children to songs can open up worlds of history, literature, human relationships and many other worthy fields of interest and study.

This past spring it was fun to point out that the kids might have heard the tune of this song in another context. Indeed, many children had watched the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry to Megan Markle on TV and they remembered when everyone stopped what they were doing during the ceremony to turn to Queen Elizabeth to sing, “God Save the Queen.” Of course, the tune had been sung in GB for a lot longer than it has been sung with its lyrics in the USA!

It’s such a rich and full song about how we experience life. It’s the illusions I recall, still, truly, about all of it, too. I do a lot of thinking about things. In the end, though, for me, very often, I’m happy to let magical thinking win the day. Just a page on a notebook? A list? Yes. But to me, it’s much more than that. This list represents 45 minutes of Sing Books joy at Mary Riley Styles Library this morning. I especially loved the chance to try out my new ukulele arrangement for BRING A TORCH JEANNETTE ISABELLA. We also sang favorites like I WANT A HIPPOPOTAMUS FOR CHRISTMAS, SILVER BELLS, and HANUKKAH O HANUKKAH. I played ukulele, kazoo, jingle sticks for many songs and my beloved limberjack horse while we sang Jingle Bells, including the verse with Fanny Bright. Such great fun! Ps: Many Thanks to my daughter Eloise who came and helped me set up, clean up, and hold books when I accompanied with ukulele. And HUGE thanks to the marvelous staff and volunteers at MRSL who make it such a nice place to visit. @littlecitylibrary
