pete seeger power of song

It was dumb luck that I got to see the PBS documentary “Pete Seeger, The Power of Song” on the PBS American Master’s series.  Our TiVo recorded it on its own.  An American Master, Pete Seeger, born in 1919, was and is, at using music to empower, unite, and inspire.

Read all about this documentary on film maker John Brown’s website:

This is what he says at the end of the documentary,

“Once upon a time wasn’t singing a part of everyday life?  As much as talking, physical exercise, and religion? Our distant ancestors, wherever they were in this world, sang while pounding grain, paddling canoes, or walking long journeys. Can we begin to make our lives once more all of a piece? Finding the right songs and singing them over and over is a way to start. And when one person taps out a beat while another leads into the melody, or when three people discover a harmony they never knew existed, or a crowd joins in a chorus as though to raise the ceiling a few feet higher, then they all know there is hope for the world.”

I deeply enjoyed GREENWICH VILLAGE (MUSIC THAT DEFINED A GENERATION) and Pete Seeger is frequently interviewed and profiled as an essential element and player in the 1960s folk movement:

greenwich village music that defined a generation
Greenwich Village (Music that Defined a Generation)

Mr. Seeger says:

*
“Plato says it’s very dangerous to allow the wrong kind of music in the republic.  However, there are now thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of people making up songs in all corners of the world and I’m more optimistic than I ever have been all my life.”
Pete Seeger

Peter Yarrow credits Pete Seeger as being a driving force behind that DON’T LAUGH AT ME PROJECT:

*
“The whole DON’T LAUGH AT ME program is kind of a legacy of Pete [Seeger]…because we’re using music in the context of feeling valuable because we’re helping each other…the music brings the people together and opens their heart…”
Peter Yarrow

RIP Pete Seeger, you walked the walk, talked the talk and SANG THE SONG! Thank you for the music you gave the world and for bringing us together in song.

I especially like these little bits from the NY Times article:

At a Madison Square Garden concert celebrating Mr. Seeger’s 90th birthday, Mr. Springsteen introduced him as “a living archive of America’s music and conscience, a testament of the power of song and culture to nudge history along.”

“My job,” he said in 2009, “is to show folks there’s a lot of good music in this world, and if used right it may help to save the planet.”

*
Pete Seeger sang folk music music that belongs to the people including THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND by Woody Guthrie.  I wrote this little THIS SONG IS YOUR SONG poem in honor of Pete Seeger:

This song is your song
This song is my song
Tuneful melody
Singing makes us strong
This song is our song
To sing together
This song was made for you and me.
