“A Real Nice Clambake” was written for the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical CAROUSEL, but the song was also wonderfully illustrated by Nadine Bernard Westcott:

REAL NICE CLAMBAKE
Words by Oscar Hammerstein II
Music by Richard Rodgers
From the Musical CAROUSEL
This was a real nice clambake,
We’re mighty glad we came.
The vittles we et
Were good, you bet,
The company was the same.
Our hearts are warm, our bellies are full,
And we are feeling prime.
This was a real nice clambake,
And we all had a real good time.
First come codfish chowder
Cooked in iron kettles,
Onions floating on the top,
Curlin’ up in pettals.
Throw’d in ribbons of salted pork,
An old New England trick.
And lapped it all up with a clamshell,
Tied onto a bayberry stick.
Ohhhhh….
This was a real nice clambake,
We’re mighty glad we came.
The vittles we et
Were good, you bet,
The company was the same.
Our hearts are warm, our bellies are full,
And we are feeling prime.
This was a real nice clambake,
And we all had a real good time.
Remember when we raked them red hot lobsters
Out of the driftwood fire?
They sizzled and crackled and sputtered a song
Fittin’ for an angels’ choir.
Fittin’ for an angels,
Fittin’ for an angels,
Fittin’ for an angels choir.
We slit ‘em down the back and peppered ‘em good,
And doused ‘em in melted butter.
Then we tore away the claws and cracked ‘em with our teeth
‘Cause we weren’t in the mood to putter.
Fittin’ for an angels,
Fittin’ for an angels,
Fittin’ for an angels choir.
Then at last come the clams.
Steamed under rockweed and poppin’ from their shells.
Just how many of ‘em galloped down our gullets,
We couldn’t say ourselves.
Ohhhhh….
This was a real nice clambake,
We’re mighty glad we came.
The vittles we et
Were good, you bet,
The company was the same.
Our hearts are warm, our bellies are full,
And we are feeling prime.
This was a real nice clambake,
And we all had a real good time.
We said it ‘afore and we’ll say it again,
We all had a real good time!

My friend Matt recently took a trip to Germany and Austria and shared dispatches and photos on Facebook. Some of the pictures came from a visit to Salzburg and the “Sound of Music” tour.
I adore “The Sound of Music” and memories about the movie and soundtrack. In the days before VCRs (remember the Betamax?) and DVDs, “The Sound of Music” TV broadcast was a HUGE event in the Everson house. And, my friend Peter and I loved singing along with an 8 track cassette (remember THOSE?) when we drove around Indianapolis in his enormous 1970′s “Caddy Cadillac.”
I put the movie soundtrack CD into the car player yesterday for the first time in a long time. Hearing the twittering of the birds just before the music swells into a crescendo with a burst of Julie Andrews exhaled singing. Just writing this gave me goosebumps.
I listened intently to the words and realized that this song is itself a testament to the glorious magic of music and it conveys the deep desire and compulsion many of us share to sing out and express our feelings in song.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
Words by Oscar Hammerstein II
Music by Richard Rodgers
The hills are alive
With the sound of music,
With songs they have sung,
For a thousand years.
The hills fill my heart,
With the sound of music.
My heart wants to sing every song it hears.
My heart wants to beat like the wings
Of the birds that rise from the lake to the trees.
My heart wants to sigh
Like a chime that flies
From a church on a breeze,
To laugh like a brook when it trips and falls
Over stones on its way,
To sing through the night,
Like a lark who is learning to pray.
I go to the hills
When my heart is lonely.
I know I will hear
What I heard before.
My heart will be blessed
With the sound of music
And I’ll sing once more.

The Sound of Music (A Classic Collectible Pop-Up)
Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
Music by Richard Rodgers
Original Stage Book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse
Story Adapted by Bert Fink
Illustrated by Dan Andreasen
Paper Engineering by Bruce Foster
Watch a video to learn more about the creation of the book, here:

The story line in this edition follows the story line from the stage production, as opposed to the movie’s which is slightly different.
For singing-along, this karaoke collection has nice, mostly cheese-free, instrumentation:

Sing “Dites-Moi” in English with a Singable Picture Book Illustrated with Kid’s Artwork
Posted on: July 10, 2011
It would be hard to find a sweeter song then “Dites-Moi,” written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the musical SOUTH PACIFIC.
The children in Kindergarten and First Grades at Tuckahoe Elementary made me wonderful artwork this year and I used some of it to create a little book for singing this song in English.

“Dites-Moi,” found in:

Getting to Know You
Words by Oscar Hammerstein II
Music by Richard Rodgers
Illustrated by Rosemary Wells
Published by HarperCollinsPublishers, New York, 2002
ISBN 0-06-626845-5
“Dites-Moi” (from SOUTH PACIFIC) gets a one page treatment, but what fun it is!
*
Sing it in French (illustrated on p. 32 of “Getting to Know You“):
Dites-moi Pourquoi
La vie est belle,
Dites-moi Pourquoi
La vie est gai?
Dites-moi Pourquoi,
Chere Mad’moiselle,
Est-ce que Parce que vous m’aimez?
*
Sing “Dites-Moi” in English:
Tell me why, please do,
Life is so pretty,
Tell me why, please do,
Life is so gay?
Tell me why, won’t you,
Dear mademoiselle,
Could it be? Would it be?
You love me?
Since Getting to Know You prints the lyrics in French, I had been singing the song a second time in English so that kids could know what the words mean. From now on, I’ll sing the English words using the new Dites-Moi booklet which is illustrated with pictures made by the kids who are singing with me!

Watch the “Dites-Moi” YouTube clip from the 1952 London production of SOUTH PACIFIC (starring Mary Martin and Wilbur Evans).
