Carnival of the Animals, composed by Camille Saint-Saens is one of the greatest delights of childhood…at least for an adult looking back on childhood.

A host of clever people (including Ogden Nash, John Lithgow, and Jack Prelutsky) have written verses to go with the music (though, sadly, none which I have found so far can actually be SUNG with the music, maybe someday) and then have worked with illustrators to create wonderful pictorial representations of the works, including:

My favorite recording with narration for “Carnival of the Animals” is by Leonard Bernstein:

Leonard Bernstein’s narration takes the listener through the piece, section by section and discusses how Saint-Saens put the music together.  Mr. Bernstein does not talk down to the child listener, but engages in a real discussion.  Knowing the thought process, instrumental choices, and musical allusions used by Saint-Saens, brings “Carnival of the Animals” alive, making the listening all the more fun and exciting.

“A-You’re Adorable” is a “Sing Books with Emily” standard and a favorite of kids and grown-ups, too.  It’s such a charming song  that is full of fun and love.

This version, illustrated by Martha Alexander is fun and bright.  I sing along with a karaoke track, found on i-Tunes and Amazon, put out by Sound Choice Karaoke (also called Stingray), Karaoke-Classic Duets, Vol. 2.  In the “Demonstration” track, the singers do make the song a duet, but the instrumental track works just fine for one person.  Put it in your CD player and enjoy singing along with the book.  It is so much fun!!

“A-You’re Adorable (The Alphabet Song)” was written by Buddy Kaye, Fred Wise and Sydney Lippman.  The song was first recorded, using a slow and drippy arrangement, by Perry Como (with the Fontane Sisters) in 1949.  I enjoy John Lithgow’s 1999 recording, on the album “Singing in the Bathtub.”

The karaoke version seems to take after Jo Stafford and Gordon MacRae’s duet version.  The light-hearted and bouncy arrangements are much more enjoyable.  Plus, the music in this karaoke track exactly match the lyric arrangment in the books:

A-You’re Adorable with ASL Alphabet

I’ve been singing the wonderful song A-You’re Adorable for quite a while now with a book I made myself.  There was a delightful illustration of the song, but it only came in a small board-book size which was not big enough, so I had to take matters into my own hands.  Speaking of hand!  As the years have gone by, I began slowly incorporating the American Sign Language (ASL) Alphabet into my performance (inviting the children to sign along with me) to give the kids a fun activity to perform while singing with me, simultaneously giving them a second skill that can be useful in understanding letters as symbols and a handy way to communicate with others over the length of a crowded room.

I figured since I’ve been signing the letters with the children, it would be fun to incorprate the signs into the book.  I found a terrific “hand sign” font and went to town:

… all use the same tune?  It’s true!

The tune itself is an old European air.  I read in one place that it is originally German, in another that it is French.

The tune seems first to have been seen in print in 1770′s France, for singing a poem, “Vous dirai-je Maman.”  A parody of it, using this tune, is still sung today by children in France.

Wherever the tune was first composed, it ranks with the many wonderful old compositions that we use to suit our needs and musical desires (like the wish to sing a particular poem), among them the tunes we know as Greensleeves and the one used to sing Yankee Doodle.  Even a young Mozart famously wrote variations on this (ABC/Twinkle Star/Baa Blacksheep/Vous dirai-je Maman) tune  in the 1780′s.

“The song was first copyrighted in 1835 by the Boston-based music publisher Charles Bradlee, and given the title “The A.B.C., a German air with variations for the flute with an easy accompaniment for the piano forte”. The musical arrangement was attributed to Louis Le Maire (sometimes Lemaire), an 18th century composer. This was “Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1835, by C. Bradlee, in the clerk’s office of the District Court of Massachusetts”, according to the Newberry Library [1], which also says, “The theme is that used by Mozart for his piano variations, Ah, vous dirai-je, maman.”[2] This tune is more commonly recognizable as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”.”

It is also fun to sing the ABC Song backwards, the ZYX’s and finish it off with “Next time let’s all go to Texas.”  The kids (and adults) always laugh!  I first heard Ralph Covert sing the ZYX’s on his album “Ralph’s World,” at the end of the ABC song, Track 14.

It’s fun to “Start at the very beginning” (or the very ending) and sing the ZYX’s at “Sing Books with Emily” gatherings.

A note on ZYXs performance (4/30/2012):

I think it’s fun to tell the kids that, “We’re going to start at the very ending…” and then after we sing the ZYXs, I say, “OK, now we’re going to sing the ZYXs backwards. Can anyone tell me what that is?” And someone will say, “The ABCs” and they’ll think that is funny. I love it every time!

The rhyme ”Baa, Baa Black Sheep” is a standard in most Mother Goose anthologies.  The rhyme, first published in the mid-1700′s, was written as  a complaint about the poor (as in the poor boy who lives down the lane) oppressed at the hands of the rich (giving up his wool to the king, the master, the dame).

“Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” is a poem by Jane Taylor, written in 1806.  I found the full text in ”Childcraft, Volume 1, The Poems of Early Childhood.”  The full text fits the tune:

How I wonder what you are!
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.

When the glorious sun is set,
When the grass with dew is wet,
