I just ran across this depiction of The Owl and the Pussycat by Charles Addams.

They (the pea-green boat and the small guitar) are included in a print called “Boats to NYC” that was printed on the cover of the New York Times Weekend Section on October 26, 1984.

Link to this print’s page on the Charles Addams website:

I love Edward Lear’s poems and have run across William Mathias’s “Learsongs” on few occasions.  This post is a compilation of the info so far gathered.  His musical settings are written with choral arrangements, but I feel certain that they can be arranged also for voice and piano, making the poems Singable and creating Singable Picture Books of their illustrations.

It’s just 6.5 inches tall and 4.75 inches wide. But its vintage charm is enormous. I love the sweet (but not too sweet) illustrations.  My copy has a red triangle in the corner with white text:  “This Start-Right Book is EDUCATIONALLY SOUND, see statement opposite title page.”  The statement opposite the title page gives a “Message to Teachers and Parents” from the National College of Education (Evanston, Illinois) about the mission for printing the book.  All this gives the books a kind of “Leave it to Beaver” feeling.

The Roman Numerals MCMLXII in small print lead me to believe it was printed in 1962.

Both poems, “The Owl and the Pussycat” and “Calico Pie” can be sung!

I’ve written about and sung “The Owl and the Pussycat,” one of my very favorite Singable Poems: http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2009/12/18/the-owl-and-the-pussycat-a-singable-book-and-all-the-fix-ins/

Calico Pie
Poem by Edward Lear
Illustrated by Edward Lear

Calico Pie,
The little birds fly
Down to the calico-tree:
Their wings were blue,
And they sang “Tilly-loo!”
Till away they flew;
And they never came back to me!
They never came back,
They never came back,
They Never came back to me!

Calico jam,
The little Fish swam
Over the Syllabub Sea.
He took off his hat
To the Sole and the Sprat,
And the Willeby-wat:
But he never came back to me;
He never came back,
He never came back,
He never came back to me.

Calico Ban,
The little Mice ran,
To be ready in time for tea,
Flippity flup,
They drank it all up,
And danced in the cup,–
But they never came back to me!
They never came back!
They never came back!
They never came back to me!

Calico Drum,
The Grasshoppers come,
The Butterfly, Beetle, and Bee,
Over the ground,
Around and around,
With a hop and a bound,–
But they never came back to me!
They never came back!
They never came back!
They never came back to me!

The Lobster Quadrille (and Other Poems for Children)
Edited by Lucy Simon
Illustrated by Susan Bennett

This book, a compilation of eleven of the very best children’s poems, compliments Lucy and Carly Simon’s Album

http://www.amazon.com/Sing-Songs-Children-Carly-Simon/dp/B001I1SFRA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1268410711&sr=1-1\

I love this collection, made by the Simon Sisters when they were both very young ladies playing these songs in New York City coffee houses.  The songs have an intimate feeling specific to that time and place, with the sisters’ voice complimenting each other, Lucy with her lovely soprano and Carly with her rich alto.

Poems illustrated and set to music in the book, and on the CD, include:

  • Wynken, Blynken and Nod (Eugene Field)
  • Calico Pie (Edward Lear)
  • The Lamplighter (Robert Louis Stevenson)
  • The Owl and the Pussycat (Edward Lear)
  • Sleep, Baby, Sleep (Traditional Lullaby)
  • The Lamb (William Blake)
  • The Lobster Quadrille (Lewis Carroll)
  • Who Has Seen the Wind (Christina Rossetti)
  • I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)
  • A Red, Red Rose (Robert Burns)
  • A Pavane for the Nursery (William Jay Smith)

This album makes for wonderful listening and reading along with the book. The problem with the album, at least for Singable Picture Books, is that the songs are not very “singable.”  They make for fantastic listening, but are not so easy for singing along, or singing solo.  I don’t find myself walking around humming the tunes.

“Wynken, Blynken and Nod” (a poem written by Eugene Field in 1889 and set to music by Lucy Simon in the mid 1960′s), however, is featured in both the book and the album (Track 1) and is one of the tracks which is wonderfully singable.  It is haunting and evocative of the nighttime journey of three children sailing in a wooden shoe on the ocean at night.  You can see a YouTube a Simon Sisters’ coffee house performance of “Wynken, Blynken and Nod”.  The audio is crackly, but the mood is set, and it is fun to journey back to 60′s New York:

Ginger Sands has included Lucy Simon’s musical setting of “Wynken, Blynken and Nod” on her terrific collection of Singable Poems “The Gift of Make Believe”.

This terrific collection features tracks with Ginger Sands’ excellent vocals and separate instrumental tracks so you can sing the songs yourself.
“Wynken, Blynken and Nod” with vocals by Ginger Sands is found on Track 9.  “Wynken, Blynken and Nod” instrumental sing-along is found on Track 19.  You can buy MP3 tracks online:

Edward Lear was a poet of nonsense.  My favorite of his poems, “The Owl and the Pussycat,” makes a lot of sense to me.

When  I “Sing Books with Emily,” the kids love it, too.

One of my favorite illustrations is by Jan Brett:

Jan Brett’s pictures realize the poem in wonderful ways.  The illustrations are colorfully gorgeous and beautifully detailed.  Brett has gone to great lengths to research and authentically bring the story to life, setting the action in Martinique.  She describes her work on O&P in a “news notes” article found on her website: http://www.janbrett.com/newsnotes/owl_newsnotes2.htm.

Besides the story of the Owl and the Pussycat, she has created a second love story that takes place along the bottom of each page, depicting a butterfly fish following the pea green boat, teaming up with exotic fishy friends to free a companion who is trapped in a bowl on the pussycat’s lap.

OK, HOLD THE PRESSES
This section is added after initially writing the post.  I still LOVE Jan Brett’s illustration, but I’ve had something of a revelation.  My husband came home today (12/17/2009) with a bag full of books for our children which he bought at a charity used-book sale.  In the middle of the bag was this:

Owl and the Pussycat
Poem by Edward Lear
Musical Settings by Various Artists
Illustrated by James Marshall
Sing “O&P” along with Emily: http://soundcloud.com/singbookswithemily/o-p-eleg-061909

I snatched it up like any greedy singer of Singable Books would do.  Luckily, neither one of my children got their eyes on it first.  Just seeing the cover, I immediately fell in love.  I cannot wait to learn more about James Marshall, but to begin with, his illustration of O&P is brilliant, wacky and outrageously delicious.

Just looking at the pictures makes me WANT TO SING and SING and show these wonderful scenes!  The Owl and the Pussycat go to sea in a beautiful pea green ocean liner called the SS Dorabella.  The Pussycat is running late from so much primping (see the Owl holding out his pocket watch in a picture before the title page) and takes so much luggage on the trip that they need an extra wagon just to haul it to the boat.  When the Pussycat proposes to the Owl, she dips him like at the end of a romantic dance.  And, when they dance by the light of the moon, a band in a row-boat provides the music.  OH the JOY and HILARITY!

It turns out that this book was the beloved James Marshall’s last work.  What a wonderful catalogue he left behind.  This is an O&P to cherish and share and sing over and over.

A highlight for any adult is the afterward written lovingly by Maurice Sendak about his friend and fellow perfectionist James Marshall.

For the purpose of enjoying this Singable Book with kids, however, I’d go with a tune written by Janene Ping and harmonized, arranged and sung by Lorraine Nelson Wolf on her album “Come Follow Me.”

This setting is whimsical, simple, and easy to sing.  On the album, she sings only the first verse, but after a few listens, you will be able to sing each verse of the poem using the same melody.

Edwar Lear was quite a character himself!  Stricken with health problems, including epilepsy, Lear rose above such difficulties to create works for laughter and joy in repressive 19th century Victorian society.  He was an artist as well as writer, illustrating many of his poems and equally famous limericks.  The drawing at the top of this post is Lear’s own for the Owl and the Pussycat when the Owl sang to a small guitar in their beautiful pea green boat.

THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT
Poem by Edward Lear
Musical Settings by Various Artists

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
‘O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!’

Pussy said to the Owl, ‘You elegant fowl!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?’
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

‘Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?’ Said the Piggy, ‘I will.’
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.

I was a student at Indiana University in Bloomington in the late 80′s/early 90′s and enjoyed visiting a restaurant called “The Runcible Spoon.”

http://www.runciblespoonrestaurant.com/

Somehow, “The Owl and the Pussycat” was not a literary fixture of my childhood, so it wasn’t until I had children and stumbled on Edward Lear’s poem (and later, the song!) that I finally figured out what the restaurant was named for and why an owl and a cat were on the sign!

**********************

Edward Lear created the word “Runcible Spoon.”  He uses the word in a couple of his poems and when he wrote it, the word was truly “nonsense,” in that he didn’t mean a kind of spoon in particular when he called it “runcible.”  He seems to have made up the word just for fun.  The word has come to mean something like a “spork,”  a utensil that has the bowl of a spoon with 3 or 4 stubby tines on the end.  My children’s school gives out runcible spoons in the lunch room!
