I just had a “THIS I BELIEVE” moment while writing an email to a friend. I ended up writing about the importance of sharing cultural experiences with children. My friend had to leave a performance early because the children she was with were getting squirmy (which happens all the time with kids!) and it got me thinking about the importance of sharing cultural experiences with children (whether they last through the whole thing or not).
I told her, “You did such a great thing…for the [kids]. I really believe that any exposure kids get to cultural enrichment is great (and important), even if they don’t last through the whole thing (and kids often don’t). Every exposure contributes to their cultural knowledge and familiarity, which in turn enriches their next experience. This is the thought process that keeps me going with “Sing Books.” I really believe in my heart that it is not just singing for fun, but cultural and educational enrichment…someone’s gotta sing these songs (to kids and everybody else!) and pass them along (so that the others can in turn pass them along)…it’s nothing less than an essential chunk of our cultural heritage and something to celebrate, enjoy, and pass along.”
So there it is, I shout it from the rooftop:
Singing to others is cultural and artistic enrichment for everyone involved! Singing to others conveys and nurtures our cultural heritage. If we don’t sing to our children and each other, passing the stories and songs along, who will? Art and Culture are important!!
PS: The picture above is by Leo, a Kindergartener in 2010-2011. I love how this picture shows two gatherings of Sing Books. Perhaps the singer in the second picture was in the audience of the first.
