Addendum 8/21/21014

Thank Goodness it was re-broadcast recently or I might not have see it, a C-Span3 (American History Channel) broadcast of a 7/3/2014 panel lecture/presentation/discussion at the Library of Congress called MYTHS SURROUNDING THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER

To watch the video of the excellent, eye opening talk, click here:
http://www.c-span.org/video/?320280-1/myths-surrounding-starspangled-banner

Some things I learned from the video:

  • Francis Scott Key did not ride out the battle on a British Ship.  He was transferred to his own American ship, which was tethered to a British ship for the duration of the battle and for about 3 days after the battle while the British gathered themselves together to leave, after making arrangements with the British for the release of Key’s friend and client Dr. Beanes.
  • Francis Scott Key, like many Americans at the time knew it,  knew the tune to To Anacreon in Heaven and purposefully wrote his song (not poem) to the melodic structure of that existing tune.  This is something done all the time, even today, setting new words to familiar tunes, and Key did this on purpose after the Battle of Fort McHenry and while he waited on his own ship to be released by the British.

Who is Anacreon?
Anacreon was a Greek lyric poet, notable for his drinking songs and hymns. Later Greeks included him in the canonical list of nine lyric poets.

STAR SPANGLED BANNER POST ADDENDA, 8/21/2014
http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2014/08/21/star-spangled-banner-post-addenda-8212014/

I’ve been working to create song sheets for each of the songs that use the most familiar twinkly tune and assembled links to each on in a single post to serve like a catalog:
MANY SONGS, ONE TWINKLY TUNE
Twinkle, ABC, Baa are only 3 of the many songs that use the same familiar tune
http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2009/12/17/abc-twinkle-star-baa-blacksheep-singable-books-and-all-the-fix-ins-and-a-youre-adorable-too/

Using the same straight forward chords for TWINKLE LITTLE BAT didn’t seem quite right.  It’s a little creepy this song, since it is sung at the slightly creepy and off kilter Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.  I decided to change a few of the chords put it off center a little, like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it’s fun to sing for being slightly uncomfortable.

2014 08 14 garden by epg 4 GOODBYE SUMMER 2

I wrote a poem (using my very best handwriting) at the beginning of second grade.
My mom framed it and put it up in my room and I still have it (thanks mom),

Goodbye, summer.
I had fun with you.
The sun was always shining,
And the sky was always blue.
Goodbye, summer.

That would have been 1976.

It took me 38 years to write this teeny-tiny song, but it sure felt sweet to find this little tune today.

**********************
Random Thoughts:

  • One of my cabaret mentors is Lena Koutrakos.  Ms. Koutrakos wrote a song with the lyric, “I don’t need nothin’ that ain’t already mine.”  What a marvelous thing say, recognizing that we have, right within us, everything we need.  With this in mind, I was thinking about making an illustrated song sheet for GOODBYE SUMMER and started to plan the clip art and what it would look like when I glanced over and saw a beautiful picture my daughter had painted…it was exactly what I wanted and captures the song perfectly…I already had exactly what I needed.
  • When I think of this song, two people come to mind, my mom and my second grade teacher Mrs. Barnett.  Mrs. Barnett had the class write poems when we got to school that year.  I’m still amazed at my 2nd grade handwriting, which is much better than what I scrawl out these days!  My mom liked the printing and the poem so much that she had the sheet framed and it always hung in my room.

A FUNNY, SCINTILLATING, CONFOUNDING OBFUSCATION
It was fun to find this online and decipher the obfuscation of the famous TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR

Read the original TWINKLE poem (first published in 1806 by Jane Taylor) on the Poetry Foundation website:
http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/171955

It will be fun to sing, too!

SCINTILLATE SCINTILLATE GLOBULE VIVIFIC
Obfuscation of Traditional Words and Tune

Scintillate, scintillate, globule vivific
Fain would I fathom thy nature specific
Loftily poised in the ether capacious
Strongly resembling a gem carbonaceous!

When torrid Phoebus removeth his presence
Ceasing to lamp us with fierce incandescence
Then you illumine the regions supernal
Scintillate, scintillate semper nocturnal.

The traveler on lusterless peregrination
Gratefully hails your minute coruscation
He could not determine his journey’s direction
But for your bright scintillating protection.

I couldn’t find a translation that rhymed for Ah vous dirai-je Maman, the French nursery song from which time has extracted the tune for TWINKLE LITTLE STAR , so I made up my own and called it OH MOTHER DEAR PLEASE LISTEN UP!

It’s not an exact translation, but I think it captures the spirit.  Then I wanted to play it on the guitar, thus the song sheet with guitar chords adapted from TWINKLE LITTLE STAR:

SOME HISTORICAL INFO ABOUT TWINKLE LITTLE STAR

The tune seems first to have been seen in print in 1770′s France, for singing a poem or nursery rhyme, “Ah vous dirai-je maman,” which translates to “Mom, I have something to tell you.”

TWINKLE ranks with the many wonderful old compositions that we use to suit our needs and musical desires (like the wish to sing a particular poem), among them the tunes we know as Greensleeves and the one used to sing Yankee Doodle.

Mozart famously wrote variations on this (Twinkle Twinkle Star/Twinkle Little Bat/Baa Blacksheep/Ah vous dirai-je maman/ABC/ZYX) tune.

A FUNNY, SCINTILLATING, CONFOUNDING OBFUSCATION
It was fun to find this online and decipher the obfuscation.  It might be fun to sing, too!

SCINTILLATE SCINTILLATE GLOBULE VIVIFIC
Obfuscation of Traditional Words and Tune

Scintillate, scintillate, globule vivific
Fain would I fathom thy nature specific
Loftily poised in the ether capacious
Strongly resembling a gem carbonaceous!

When torrid Phoebus removeth his presence
Ceasing to lamp us with fierce incandescense
Then you illumine the regions supernal
Scintillate, scintillate semper nocturnal.

The traveller on lustreless perigrination
Gratefully hails your minute coruscation
He could not determine his journey’s direction
But for your bright scintillitating protection.

Song Sheet with Guitar Chords for HOW DOTH THE LITTLE CROCODILE by ELEG for SBWE

busy bee honeycomb - Copy

The following is a cut/paste from my post for HOW DOTH THE LITTLE CROCODILE:

In Lewis Carroll’s book, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, poor Alice, she is so confused their in Wonderland and can’t quite get the right footing.  When Alice is in the strange room in which she lands after falling down the rabbit hole, she begins to have a set of strange experiences.  She begins to wonder who she is and if she is who she thinks she is or maybe someone else.  She tries to remember something familiar by repeating a well-known nursery rhyme, “Against Idleness and Mischief,” by Isaac Watts.  But it comes out all wrong.  It’s supposed to begin “How doth the little busy bee.” but instead she recites, “How doth the little crocodile…” and thus we have our little song.

Addendum 7/27/2014

Writing this in July 2014, I’ve been taking guitar lessons for about a year now.  I’ve collected up a number of chords with which I am familiar and which feel like friends to me and I use many of them at will to arrange songs to accompany myself on guitar…familiar songs and some written together with my children.

My guitar teacher Josh pointed out that, thought the F chord, is common in the keys I frequently use for singing, I’ve successfully avoided using it in my guitar playing and maybe it’s about time I made it a friend with the others.

OK.  But the F chord is difficult.  Playing the the “real” way (as in playing it as a bar chord) is currently impossible, but the “cheat” version is hard enough, requiring me to use all 4 playing fingers on my left hand while remembering not to strum the top and bottom strings (both the note E, which do not belong in the chord).

So I decided to find a song that I really want to play and that would require me to use an F chord.  Looking through the book:

*
modest coll trad songs of colonial period
A Modest Collection of Traditional Songs of the Colonial Period
Words and Music by Various Artists
Collected and Edited by M. Richard Tully

I found a simple arrangement of the song GREENSLEEVES, which a few years ago I discovered is the perfect tune for singing Robert Frost’s poem STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING, which has since become one of my favorite songs to sing…a classic, gorgeous American poem to an ancient, gorgeous tune.

We have a winner.  Now I begin…

Here are the GREENSLEEVES guitar chords fitted to STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING.
