I wanted my own copy of FOX WENT OUT ON A CHILLY NIGHT, as illustrated by Wendy Watson, for a long time.  It just arrived.  I bought a very good ex-library hardcover edition from Amazon and it is as sweet and delightful an illustration as one would expect from Wendy Watson.

fox went out wendy watson
Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night
Traditional Words and Music
Illustrated by Wendy Watson
ISBN 0-688-10766-4

As with any old folks song, the lyrics will often vary from one printed version to another (and among the many people who sing and perform it) and that is the case here.  I’ve been singing this for kids with Peter Spier’s illustration (which I also adore) and the lyrics within are slightly different than that, but the differences are wonderful and it will be lots of fun to sing both.  For example, in Peter Spier’s illustration, the woman who discovers the fox and sticks her head out of the window is “Old Mother Giggle-Gaggle,” but in Wendy Watson’s illustration, the woman is “Old Mother Slipper-Slopper,” who Ms. Watson adorably draws wearing sloppy slippers.

The inside cover book flap for Wendy Watson’s illustration offers this info:

This classic folk song of a fox in pursuit of his dinner was first published in the 1810 edition of Gammer Gurton’s Garland.  It has been a childhood favorite ever since…

It’s hilarious to me, that, in the text mentioned above from Gammer Gurton’s Garland, the woman is called “Old Mother Widdle Waddle.”

In the 1810 Gammer Gurton’s Garland, this is all there is of what was to become the song FOX WENT OUT ON A CHILLY NIGHT:

DAME WIDDLE WADDLE.

Old Mother Widdle Waddle jumpt out of bed,
And out at the casement she popt out her head:
Crying the house is on fire, the grey goose is dead,
And the fox he is come to the town, oh!

June 2013, The Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation is hosting their annual Tinner Hill Blues Festival and I’m honored to have been asked to share Singable Blues related picture books with children at the Mary Riley Styles Public Library in Falls Church, VA.  We worked out the song/book list from my existing repertoire, but I am interested in learning more and finding new Singable Picture Books to suit this delightful subject.

The following list includes the songs that I will be sharing at the Tinner Hill Blues Festival.  Here are the items I’ve found so far…

Regarding  I’m in Love with a Big Blue Frog:
Though it is not traditionally a Blues song, it does fit Conan’s definition in that the song deals with a subject that is painful for some (interracial couples  not feeling welcome in their communities) in a way that has the potential to be humorous and to make people happy.

The next day I was searching around for Blues Related Singable Picture Books and stumbled on a video featuring the late night talk show host and comic Conan teaching a group of school children about The Blues and working with these first graders to write a Blues song. Hilarity results, but he begins by telling them the purpose of the Blues as a musical art form, ”Now, here’s what we do.  To write the Blues, you write about something that’s making you unhappy.  And by singing about something that makes you unhappy, it makes you feel better…”

LITTLE SONGS, A NOTEBOOK OF SWEET LITTLE SONGS (MOSTLY SINGABLE POETRY) FOR TO SING WHEN YOUR BRAIN FEELS FUZZY
I have assembled a notebook and ring of CD sing-alongs to accompany those songs that have music (most of them can/should be sung a-capella).  I don’t have a post for this notebook yet, but I’m quite delighted with the idea and execution of it.  The idea is to have notebook of sweet little songs and singable poems to have in your pocket. I was inspired, in particular, by the song COTTLESTON PIE, and Pooh having this little song at the ready for when his brain felt fuzzy.  I know of a whole slew of sweet little songs to have at the ready, so decided to assemble them into once place.  Keep a lookout for a post about his notebook.  We sang these songs from the SINGABLE POETRY AND LITTLE SONGS NOTEBOOK:
