Ms Anctil asked me to join them in a class sing-along.  My daughter Eloise had Ms. Anctil for Kindergarten and I still treasure Elois’s MY SONG AND POETRY NOTEBOOK that Ms. Anctil’s lucky students compiled throughout the year, and the lucky kids in her current class have just begun compiling theirs.

The page the children were working on was for a song called I AM SPECIAL to but sung to the tune of FRERE JACQUES.  Which is extra fun because any song set to the tune of FRERE JACQUES can be sun in a round, which is what I got to do with the class.

This is how it goes:

I AM SPECIAL
Sing to the tune of Frere Jacques

I am special,
I am special
If you look, you will see
Someone very special
Someone very special
It is me, it is me!!

This is an excellent example of using a song to spur emergent reading skills.  The words are easy to sing to the familiar tune and learn by listening, but then the child can match the words already known to the words seen printed on the page.

CHELSEA MORNING for Halloween

Though the song itself doesn’t scream HALLOWEEN, I found myself reaching for it when assembling stacks of songs to share for Sing Books visits when we were thinking about Halloween fun.  The reason is the book’s illustrations, pictures filled with fanciful fairies and creatures, owls and incense, it seemed like just the thing when celebrating this time filled with fanciful costumes and imagination.

CHELSEA MORNING for Christmas

The lyric is there…

Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning, and the first thing that I heard
Was a song outside my window, and the traffic wrote the words
It came a-reeling up like Christmas bells, and rapping up like pipes and drums

**********************
Addendum, 11/6/2013

CHELSEA MORNING, a song for the senses

Children are learning about all sorts of things in elementary school, not the least of which is to observe and experience the world around them with the use of all 5 senses:  SIGHT, SMELL, TASTE, TOUCH, HEAR and the sensual, beautiful vocabulary in this wonderful song  encompasses them all.

I would encourage teachers to use this song to explore the subject of the human senses.

I know that illustrators can’t just pull books out of a hat or anything, but I love the books by Giselle Potter and I WISH more of them were Singable!  Two of my very favorite Singable Picture Books to share with children (C’mon an Swing in My Tree and Wynken, Blynken, and Nod) are illustrated by Ms. Potter.
