On 4/11/2014, I lead the second of my two one-hour Singable Expeditions in the Tuckahoe Elementary Discovery Schoolyard Outdoor Classroom in April. I had been asked to write a song based on outdoor classroom rules that were written by children at Tuckahoe which this same group of children and I had begun learning in the first session.  We started by rehearsing that song.

The central feature of the second session was the idea of the wonderful world of COLLECTIVE NOUNS, as captured in friend Jill Leger’s song, THE SPARROW.  The song is about a sparrow who travels and has adventures all over the world meeting groups of animals and learning their group names.  Not only is learning and discovering group names (also called collective nouns, collective terms, group nouns, group terms) a fun and interesting way to explore the marvelous creatures of the world, but it is also an excellent way to increase and revel in vocabulary!  I love to tell kids that one of the MANY fun things about singing songs is that you get to say/sing/use/explore fabulous words that we don’t use in our every day language.  And the words used in COLLECTIVE NOUNS can be descriptive, hilarious, thought provoking, fascinating, witty, joyous and gorgeous!

I took a marvelous list of Collective Noun Terms that I found on Wikipedia and highlighted the garden related ones on the list.  And went through the beautifully illustrated books A ZEAL OF ZEBRAS (Woop Studios), and WILD ANIMALS (Brian Wildsmith) and BIRDS (Brian Wildsmith) to find gorgeous illustrations of Collective Nouns.  We enjoyed going through these lists and books, finding (or imagining) these items, birds, flowers, animals in our immediate surroundings.  Then we made note of certain garden items that we saw for which group names were not listed.  For these, we cam up with some marvelous ideas.  I would encourage any caregiver or educator to replicate this activity.  It was fun, thought provoking, creative and vocabulary building.

**********************

I asked the children to look around them or items in the garden for which group names could not be found on our list or in our books.

Only beans of “Three Sisters” were given collective terms in our list.   The children have been taught that “The Three Sisters” is the combination of beans, corn and squash that the Native Americans taught the white settlers to plant.  The three foods are plated all together so that when the corn stalk grows, it provides a pole to support the bean vines and the squash leaves cover the ground to keep the soil moist.  In addition, eating this combination of foods provides good nutrition.

Beans, on our list, was given the collective term “a hill of beans,” but the children came up with a couple others:
A bar of beans (since beans come sometimes in a row inside a pod)
A pattern of beans (since one of the girls had recently participated in and activity of making a picture with beans of different varieties which were richly pattered with spots and colors.

Here are the other garden items and collective terms the kids came up with:

CORN
An audience of corn
A light of corn
A filed of corn

DAFFODILS
A field of daffodils
A jingle-jangle of daffodils
A twinkling of daffodils
A tea party of daffodils

TEDDY BEARS
(in case they were hiding in the garden for a picnic)
A fuzz of teddy bears

TULIPS
A rainbow of tulips
A solar system of tulips
A necklace of tulips
A collage of tulips
A crown of tulips

SQUASH
A meadow of squash
A disco of squash
A waterfall of squash
A gumball machine of squash

**********************

For the remainder of the time, we enjoyed a GARDEN SING-ALONG in the outdoor space. We rehearsed THE TUCKAHOE ELEMENTARY DISCOVERY SCHOOLYARD OUTDOOR CLASSROOM RULES TUNE so the kids can help teach the song to their classmates (and so everyone knows the rules and behavioral expectation in the outdoor spaces) and then we sang a bunch of songs culled from my list of GARDEN SING-ALONG SONG CHOICES.

Here are the songs we sang in Singable Expeditions Session 2:

A list of individually illustrated poems that have been set to music and can be sung
http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2012/04/20/poems-individually-illustrated-spb/

This is a list of songs for a Garden Sing-Along as well as suggestions for 2 one-hour long outdoor garden activity sessions (or classes) for any group of children.

This list was originally made for Tuckahoe Elementary School Expeditions.  Each of my Expeditions consisted of two one-hour sessions over two Fridays.  I did both sets in April and May of 2014, with two different groups of kids from 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades.  I will have two, one hour sessions with each group of kids.

I think these plans (or some permutation of them) would work great for any group of elementary students to have a wonderful musical experience outdoors in a garden.

SINGABLE EXPEDITIONS IN THE GARDEN SESSION ONE (One Hour)
In the first session we learned THE TUCKAHOE ELEMENTARY DISCOVERY SCHOOLYARD OUTDOOR CLASSROOM RULES TUNE and then sing Inch by Inch (The Garden Song).  To make a strong connection with the ideas expressed in Inch by Inch (The Garden Song)  we planted sunflower seeds in a cups.  We gave the seeds a little water and covered with foil to seal the cup for the ride home and packaged each one in a zip lock bag with each child’s name.  I made sure to buy sunflower seeds for a shorter variety of flower and hope the children will watch the seed spout and then re-plant each germinated seed in the ground where it will gets lots of sun.  And, of course, I hope the children will each put the packaging in the recycle.  We had some time left over so we filled that with wonderful songs from the GARDEN SING ALONG list (below).

*
I conducted my first Singable Expeditions in the Garden Session One on 4/4/2014.
The session went wonderfully well!  We had a terrific time.
Here is the detailed post about exactly what we did and the songs we ended up singing:

SINGABLE EXPEDITIONS IN THE GARDEN, MISSION
My goal for the singing and musical activities is to help us make a strong connection to nature and the the outdoor classroom garden spaces at Tuckahoe (or anyplace anyone would engage in these activities in any green space).

THIS LIST OF GARDEN SONGS, AS THEY ADVANCE THE MISSION OF THE SINGABLE EXPEDITIONS IN THE GARDEN
There are many songs that would be appropriate, but these are the ones I feel will help us really love, appreciate and enjoy our time outside.

I will encourage the participants to really listen to the words and then look around them and observe the natural world.  Notice plants, creatures and landscape features mentioned in the songs.  I will encourage them, also, to use their imaginations to “see” creatures who might be there when we aren’t looking or nocturnal creatures that roam these very spaces at night.  I will encourage them to use their noggins and think about what the natural world means to them and how best to support and sustain the beautiful gifts of nature.

To spur discussion, critical thinking and personal connections between the song and garden environment, you can ask these questions (and any others that you might come up with) about each song:

  • What living things (plants and animals) in the song can you identify in your immediate surroundings?
  • What do you know about these living things?
  • What would you like to know about these living things?
  • Did anything in the song remind you of an experience you’ve had?
  • Did anything in the song spark your imagination as related to your garden surroundings?
  • What words did you like in the song?
  • What words would you need to look up to find out what they mean?
  • Does anything about the song influence your thinking on people’s responsibility to the earth?
  • What does the song make you think about the garden?
  • Did the song give you any interesting thoughts and ideas?

The essence of this activity is captured in a lyric from Inch by Inch (The Garden Song) which says,

Tune by body and my brain/To the music from the land.

ILLUSTRATED SONGBOOKS AND COLLECTIONS (COMPILATIONS) OF CHILDREN’S SONGS WITH MUSIC
This list is populated by books that compile printed music and illustrations for children’s songs

http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2012/08/15/illustrated-collections-of-childrens-songs-with-music/

Thanks to snow days on Monday and Tuesday and P/T Conferences on Thursday and Friday, we only got one Sing Books this week.  And, Wednesday was the regularly scheduled “Early Release” day for Tuckahoe Elementary, so the children only went to school for a half-day…they must be counting their lucky stars this week!

The Sing Books visit was incredibly fun with Ms. Allen and Ms. Howard’s combined group.  This collection of 2nd Graders loves to make requests for the next visit (and I certainly LOVE to grant those requests).  But I though instead of just writing their requests in my book, I’d start requiring that they “submit requests in writing.”  They ran to their desks and searched the floor for scraps of paper to write their requests.  I taped them in my book:

2014 03 05 Sing Books list and requests - Copy

As a performer and artist, few things are more satisfying than this.  The kids know these songs and they love them because we spend this time singing together.  It just makes me heart SING!

For the next visit the requests are:

  • There’s a Train Out for Dreamland
  • Marvelous Toy
  • Grandma’s Feather Bed (2 requests)
  • Rubber Duckie
  • Fifty Nifty States
  • I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas
  • Big Bell and the Little Bell
  • Late for School

You bet! I’ll bring them all!

We sang these songs we sang:

The Singable Picture Books of John, Paul, George, and Ringo

I got to share a selection of these songs in the classes of Ms. Morgan (K), Mr. Mitchell (K), Ms. Torpy (4), Ms. Sackett (1), Mr. Koppelman (2), Mr. Grasso (3), Ms. Coffman (3) and Ms. Strickland (3).

These are just songs in a list.  I could not find words to express what goes on when we sing them.  The children and I are fully engaged and our experience together (and by ourselves alone, individuals in the group) transcends everything about the list.  That’s what music does.  Music engages and transcends.  The experience is inexplicable magic and pure joy.  And, heaven willing, it will last and last and then children will pay it forward and pass it along.

I’ve not made up one of these posts in over a month…overwhelmed as I was with family activities and mostly the SNOW DAYS!  We had a wonderful time, though, in all cases.

In this month of Sundays, I got to share 21 performances and visit (most of the time I’m singing to 2 classes at once) the classes of Ms. Everett (K), Ms. Campbell (K), Ms. Shorter (K), Ms. Mason (K), Miss Robin (Pre-K), Mr. Mitchell (K), Ms. Anctil (K), Ms. Sackett (1), Mr. Grasso (3), Mr. Koppelman (2), Ms. Morgan (K), Ms. Coffman (3), Ms. Strickland (3), Ms. Howard (2), Ms. Allen (2).  Most of these classes are at Tuckahoe Elementary, but I also get to visit Claremont Elementary and Carlin Springs Elementary.  Most of these classes I visited two or three times in the month.

Whew!!

Now for the marvelous songs.  In each of the visits, we sang a selection of this fabulous list of songs (listed, generally, in alphabetical order),
