I had a marvelous time at the Gainsville Neighborhood Library in Haymarket, VA.  The sweet library is situated in a beautiful regional park and I was glad to have gotten there early so I could sit outside and smell the flowers a little.

We started out with just a few kids, but by the end, we filled the Children’s Section with kids and their caregivers.  I met some very nice people who I sincerely hope to see again!

Here’s what we sang, listed in alpha order:

frog he would a-wooing go stobbs - Copy
A Frog He Would a-Wooing Go
Traditional Words and Tune
Illustrated by William Stobbs
Another title for same song is Froggie Went a-Courtin’

A friend of mine had an interesting conversion going on Facebook and someone mentioned the song FROGGIE WENT A-COURTIN’.

This reminded me that I bought a frog limberjack for singing the song (for which I also plan to use the horse limberjack I already had)

FROGGIE is a story song, but the story can be repetititve and can progress slowly.  So, as to keep kid’s attention and keep the story moving, I’ve adapted the song to suit my needs. As the folks process allows, I’ve added a couple new lyrics and changed others.

I didn’t want Forggie to be packing a pistol, for example. I prefer that he just wanted to dress up and look nice for Miss Mousie.  I also wanted to condense the conversation with Uncle Rat, have him bless the wedding, and get right to the festivities.  In my version, the Bumblebee comes to play the banjo and the Old Gray Goose cuts loose on the fiddle, and the Ants come for a dance.  I wanted to make sure they go to France for they honeymoon and, as is traditional, for listeners to be told to make up some new story for themselves.

FROGGIE WENT A-COURTIN’
Traditional Words and Tune
Some Adaptations by ELEG for SBWE

Froggie went a-courtin’ and he did ride, a-huh
Froggie went a-courtin’ and he did ride
All dressed up to show his pride
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

He rode down to Mousie’s door, a-huh
He rode down to Mousie’s door
Where he had often been before
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

He took Miss Mousie on his knee, a-huh
He took Miss Mousie on his knee
And asked “Miss Mouse will you marry me?”
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

“You must ask my Uncle Rat’s consent,” a-huh
”Without my Uncle Rat’s consent
I would not marry the president”
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

Uncle Rat smiled and he said yes, a-huh
Uncle Rat smiled and he said yes
And this his how the wedding went
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

First to come was the Bumblebee, a-huh
First to come was the Bumblebee
Who played the banjo on his knee
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

Next to come was the Old Gray Goose, a-huh
Next to come was the Old Gray Goose
She picked up her fiddle and she cut loose
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

Last to come were the Fancy Ants, a-huh
Last to come were the Fancy Ants
Steppin’ ‘round to have a dance
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

The Mouse and Frog each said “I do,” a-huh
The Mouse and Frog said, “I marry you,”
Then off to France for their Honeymoon
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

The wedding picture sits on a shelf, a-huh
The wedding picture sits on a shelf
If you want anymore, then sing it yourself
A-huh, a-huh, fare thee well

DOGS IN ILLUSTRATED SONGS
http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2014/07/09/dogs-in-illustrated-songs/

We had a wonderful time Singing Books today at the Dumfries Neighborhood Library in Dumfries, VA this morning.

It was a large and delightful crowd of children and their caregivers.  I got to visit with some old friends and make new friends, too.  My heartfelt thanks to everyone who came out to sing with me today.

I brought my guitar to sing OLD BLUE to honor the PAWS TO READ, 2014 Summer Reading program theme this year.  We also made use of my glockenspiel, foot tambourines, rubber duckie and kazoo.  It’s always more fun with instruments!

Here’s our song stack (listed in alpha order),

I made a poster with the Declaration of Independence Trumbull Portrait to celebrate Independence Day 2014, using the 1776 verse text my daughter learned for her 4th grade Colonial Day.

Since the text is not so easy to read on the first poster, I decided to make a second one so kids can read the text and sing-along:

I saw a meme posted on someone’s Facebook page that modified an acrostic poem and used the words math, language, history, reading and science to exemplify the educational and cultural enrichment that music offers:

MATH
LANGUAGE
HISTORY
READING
SCIENCE

It is not always easy to articulate for others what I do with my Sing Books work, or to help folks understand why music is so enriching (for EVERYONE…not just kids) I liked that music is math, language, history, reading and science meme so much, and since those words apply also to the illustrated songs in the Sing Books repertoire (and to the activity of singing of those songs), I’d make it my own.

A little Patriotic Gift to USA from Sing Books with Emily on Independence Day 2014

My children both went to Tuckahoe Elementary School in the 4th grade and participated in the wonderful event (the day to which most of the 4th grade at Tuckahoe leads up to) known as COLONIAL DAY.  A section of the celebration is devoted to songs of the period.  They learn a verse to YANKEE DOODLE that is not usually sung.

I’ve adapted it slightly and made a poster:

In Seventeen-hundred Seventy-six
On the Fourth Day of July
Our Independence we declared
In the fight for liberty

Yankee Doodle keep it up
Yankee Doodle Dandy
Mind the music and the step
And let us all be handy

A note form Emily on a lyric in the classic patriotic ditty (and why Emily changed it)

I love the song YANKEE DOODLE and most of what it stands for, but that lyric “let the girls be handy,” has always bothered me.  When I sing the song with children in classrooms and libraries, I let the children come up with other ideas for who should also be handy (since I believe EVERYONE should be handy).  I suggest:  Dads, Moms, Teachers, Sisters, Brothers, Boys, etc.

In this case, I decided to change the lyric to “LET US ALL BE HANDY.”  That pretty well covers it and I like it much better.
