On 4/11/2014, I lead the second of my two one-hour Singable Expeditions in the Tuckahoe Elementary Discovery Schoolyard Outdoor Classroom in April. I had been asked to write a song based on outdoor classroom rules that were written by children at Tuckahoe which this same group of children and I had begun learning in the first session.  We started by rehearsing that song.

The central feature of the second session was the idea of the wonderful world of COLLECTIVE NOUNS, as captured in friend Jill Leger’s song, THE SPARROW.  The song is about a sparrow who travels and has adventures all over the world meeting groups of animals and learning their group names.  Not only is learning and discovering group names (also called collective nouns, collective terms, group nouns, group terms) a fun and interesting way to explore the marvelous creatures of the world, but it is also an excellent way to increase and revel in vocabulary!  I love to tell kids that one of the MANY fun things about singing songs is that you get to say/sing/use/explore fabulous words that we don’t use in our every day language.  And the words used in COLLECTIVE NOUNS can be descriptive, hilarious, thought provoking, fascinating, witty, joyous and gorgeous!

I took a marvelous list of Collective Noun Terms that I found on Wikipedia and highlighted the garden related ones on the list.  And went through the beautifully illustrated books A ZEAL OF ZEBRAS (Woop Studios), and WILD ANIMALS (Brian Wildsmith) and BIRDS (Brian Wildsmith) to find gorgeous illustrations of Collective Nouns.  We enjoyed going through these lists and books, finding (or imagining) these items, birds, flowers, animals in our immediate surroundings.  Then we made note of certain garden items that we saw for which group names were not listed.  For these, we cam up with some marvelous ideas.  I would encourage any caregiver or educator to replicate this activity.  It was fun, thought provoking, creative and vocabulary building.

**********************

I asked the children to look around them or items in the garden for which group names could not be found on our list or in our books.

Only beans of “Three Sisters” were given collective terms in our list.   The children have been taught that “The Three Sisters” is the combination of beans, corn and squash that the Native Americans taught the white settlers to plant.  The three foods are plated all together so that when the corn stalk grows, it provides a pole to support the bean vines and the squash leaves cover the ground to keep the soil moist.  In addition, eating this combination of foods provides good nutrition.

Beans, on our list, was given the collective term “a hill of beans,” but the children came up with a couple others:
A bar of beans (since beans come sometimes in a row inside a pod)
A pattern of beans (since one of the girls had recently participated in and activity of making a picture with beans of different varieties which were richly pattered with spots and colors.

Here are the other garden items and collective terms the kids came up with:

CORN
An audience of corn
A light of corn
A filed of corn

DAFFODILS
A field of daffodils
A jingle-jangle of daffodils
A twinkling of daffodils
A tea party of daffodils

TEDDY BEARS
(in case they were hiding in the garden for a picnic)
A fuzz of teddy bears

TULIPS
A rainbow of tulips
A solar system of tulips
A necklace of tulips
A collage of tulips
A crown of tulips

SQUASH
A meadow of squash
A disco of squash
A waterfall of squash
A gumball machine of squash

**********************

For the remainder of the time, we enjoyed a GARDEN SING-ALONG in the outdoor space. We rehearsed THE TUCKAHOE ELEMENTARY DISCOVERY SCHOOLYARD OUTDOOR CLASSROOM RULES TUNE so the kids can help teach the song to their classmates (and so everyone knows the rules and behavioral expectation in the outdoor spaces) and then we sang a bunch of songs culled from my list of GARDEN SING-ALONG SONG CHOICES.

Here are the songs we sang in Singable Expeditions Session 2:

Books that Feature Collective Noun Terms

I tell the children that if they are interested in expanding vocabulary, a great place to start is with the words used for animal groupings:

  • An AMBUSH of tigers
  • A SHREWDNESS of apes.
  • A WEDGE of swans.
  • An OSTENTATION of peacocks.
  • A TROUBLING of hummingbirds.
  • A SHIVER of sharks.

SINGABLE HIKE PROGRAM
(Details below)

  1. Visit Smithsonian Museum of American History. Explore the flag exhibit and learn the story of the flag and the song.
  2. Sing THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER  (need permission to sing indoors)
  3. Hike to the Lincoln Memorial
  4. Arrive at  Lincoln Memorial, explore and read THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS inscribed on interior wall
  5. Sing THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS (permit  required to sing on the steps)

1: Explore The Star Spangled Banner exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum of American History
Arrive at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. Explore the flag exhibit and learn the story of the flag and the song.  An atmosphere of quite respect is maintained inside the exhibit.  You will see artifacts from the War of 1812. You will see the actual flag the original poem was written about, how it was made and who kept it after the battle was over.

2: Sing THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER  (need permission to sing indoors)
Stand outside of the exhibit and look at THE ABSTRACT FLAG and sing THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER in your head if you have not obtained permission to sing the song out loud.  You will need permission to sing out loud inside the museum.  As an alternative, you might exit the building and sing the song while standing outside the museum.

3: Hike to the Lincoln Memorial
The hike from the Smithsonian Museum of American History  to the Lincoln Memorial is about 1 mile.  Leave the museum through the doors on the  National Mall side of the building.  Walk up the paths down the center of the National Mall.  You will pass the Washington Monument, the WWII Memorial and the Reflecting Pool.  Look straight ahead and you will see the  Lincoln Memorial.

4: Arrive at  Lincoln Memorial, explore and read THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS inscribed on interior wall
It is an awesome experience to walk up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and look into the interior of the memorial to see the huge marble sculpture of our great president.  I love to see his hands, one that looks very much to me like it is making the ASL sign for A while the other hand makes what looks like the ASL sign for L.  While facing the President Lincoln, look to your left.  The Gettysburg Address is engraved on the wall.  Sing or read it in your head, always being respectful of those around you.

5: Sing THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS (permit required to sing on steps)
Sing THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS.  You will need to obtain permission from the National Park Service to sing on the steps of the memorial (but never inside where an atmosphere of quiet respect is maintained).  You might like to walk down the steps stand by the Reflecting Pool and look up at the memorial to sing the song.

Tuckahoe Elementary School in Arlington, VA boasts a wonderful outdoor learning program called the DISCOVERY SCHOOLYARD. The Discovery Schoolyard consists of gardens (most classrooms have dedicated gardens) that surround the school as well as a lovely courtyard garden in the center of the school.  Recently, the coordinator for the Discovery Schoolyard asked me to lead and “Expeditions” program, which is when a parent or volunteer takes a class of kids into these outdoor spaces to explore a subject in nature.

Of course I wanted to make my expedition program singable.  The coordinator asked if I might write a song using the rules some of the children came up with as schoolyard behavior guidelines so everyone (and everything) can be happy and safe in the gardens.

**********************
The children composed
TUCKAHOE ELEMENTARY DISCOVERY SCHOOLYARD OUTDOOR CLASSROOM RULES:

  1. Walk on the paths. Don’t run.
  2. Stay with your group.
  3. Be respectful of tools.
  4. Leave living nature in nature.
  5. Use correct voice levels.

**********************
I used this lovely set of rules to write
THE TUCKAHOE ELEMENTARY DISCOVERY SCHOOLYARD OUTDOOR CLASSROOM RULES TUNE
These are the original sing-along tracks I made when I wrote the song and played it on my guitar:

I wrote the tune (March, 2014) using my guitar and sent a scratch recording of me singing the song plus a PDF of the song sheet I made for the tune which included the words and guitar chords to Paul Raiman of www.MyRehearsalPianist.com.  He used what I sent him to create a musical accompaniment sing-along track and a printable PDF musical lead sheet that includes the melody, lyrics and guitar chords.

Paul’s skills amaze and delight me.  Now we can sing the song and kids at the school can sing the rules!

I also want to thank my guitar teacher Josh Walker.  He suggested a couple alternate chords that I liked very much and he’s the reason I was able to use my guitar to make and play the tune.

Working with marvelous musicians (even on a sweet, simple little tune) is a little slice of musical heaven.

The Singable Picture Books of John, Paul, George, and Ringo

http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2013/09/26/the-beatles-in-singable-picture-books/

I’ve not made up one of these posts in over a month…overwhelmed as I was with family activities and mostly the SNOW DAYS!  We had a wonderful time, though, in all cases.

In this month of Sundays, I got to share 21 performances and visit (most of the time I’m singing to 2 classes at once) the classes of Ms. Everett (K), Ms. Campbell (K), Ms. Shorter (K), Ms. Mason (K), Miss Robin (Pre-K), Mr. Mitchell (K), Ms. Anctil (K), Ms. Sackett (1), Mr. Grasso (3), Mr. Koppelman (2), Ms. Morgan (K), Ms. Coffman (3), Ms. Strickland (3), Ms. Howard (2), Ms. Allen (2).  Most of these classes are at Tuckahoe Elementary, but I also get to visit Claremont Elementary and Carlin Springs Elementary.  Most of these classes I visited two or three times in the month.

Whew!!

Now for the marvelous songs.  In each of the visits, we sang a selection of this fabulous list of songs (listed, generally, in alphabetical order),

SLEEPYTIME SONGS
A Singable Picture Book in the Peter Yarrow Songbook Series

I’m gearing up to lead a “Singable Hike” in Washington, DC for my daughter’s Girl Scout Troop and am excited to give the Smithsonian Folkways recorded musical setting of THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS a try.  I’d like for the girls, other parents and I to sing this musical setting of the great speech after visiting the Lincoln Memorial (and the inscription of THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS which festoons one of the interior walls of the memorial) somewhere in the vicinity of the memorial, depending on the rules of the National Park Service.

In preparing for this event, my friend Paul transcribed and played the accompaniment and melody line so we can learn the song:

I created a Girl Scout Songbook sing-along lyric sheet for our Girl Scout Troop (or anyone else who would like to print this marvelous speech so that they can sing it, too),

This post is now and will always be UNDER CONSTRUCTION.  I am currently researching and assembling additional songs/locations for this list.  Also, very importantly, I am researching information about rules and regulations for Rules and regulations for singing and gathering in public, especially at National Historical Sites.
