Sing Books with Emily, the Blog

Archive for the ‘Poetry’ Category

Winter and Winter Holidays were the theme this week in the classes of Miss Robin (Pre-K), Mr. Mitchell (K), Ms. Slovensky (1), Ms. Trojan (1), Ms. Sackett (1), Ms. Everett (K), Ms. Campbell (K), Ms. Anctil (K), and Ms. Mason (K) at Tuckahoe Elementary, Timber Lane Elementary an, Carlin Springs Elementary, and Ashlawn Elementary Schools..  It was so much fun to celebrate the season!

In each class, we sang a selection of songs from the following list (arranged here in no particular order).  I like, sometimes, to put things in the list randomly, so that folks who check in can see new and different items on the top.  I frequently will sing the ABCs and ZYXs with children to start things off and we’ll do the American Sign Language signs for the letters.  But that would put the ABCs on top every time.  I think it’s fun to see other selections on the top, like I Know and Old Lady Who Swallowed a Dreidel or Señor Pancho Had a Rancho.  The world of Illustrated Song is rich and it s exciting (at least to me) to see, and see anew, lists of them and all the fun we can have singing and learning!

*
Before we sang this song, we looked at images of the masterworks of art parodied by the illustrator in this delightful book!

http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2011/09/10/american-songbook-singable-picture-books-and-michael-feinsteins-foundation-for-the-preservation-of-the-great-american-songbook/

I was given the honor of a request to select a list of my favorite Illustrated Songs published in 2014.  I’m always on the hunt for Illustrated Songs old and new, but putting this list together provided a wonderful opportunity to look and look again for Singable Treasures published just this year.  Looking again unearthed a couple of jewels I’d not run across before.  Most of my research and comments about each book in this list will be found in the posts about them.  Just click on the title for a book to arrive at a post I assembled about it.  Each post might include song history, videos, sing along tracks, personal musings and experience with the song, children’s artwork, audio clips and much more.  In a couple cases, I’ve written an additional comment directly below the book information.

The books are listed in alphabetical, not rank, order.  Not all these are in my regular repertoire, but they are all fantastic examples of Illustrated Song.

Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night (An Old Song), 2014 Reissue
Traditional Words and Tune

This reissue of Peter Spier’s FOX WENT OUT ON A CHILLY NIGHT is a MUST HAVE.  It’s such a great song and this new edition includes newly colorized pages.  In the first edition of the book, only half the pages were in color, the other half were black and white drawings (in Peter Spier’s incredibly detailed style).  In this edition, everything has been newly colored, every page.  It’s beautiful and an improvement on the nearly perfect first edition.

The hardcover, original release of this book was a couple years ago, but I’m delighted to see that 2014 saw the release of the board book edition, so I could put this wonderful song (and gorgeous illustration) on the list.  This book, with its beautiful colors, and lyrics which have touched and inspired generations of dreamers all over, deserves to be poured over and sung again and again.

This is a reissue of Peter Spier’s incredible illustration for this song.  It is very detailed with restored color. This edition includes all verses from the poem, not just the first verse which Americans know as their National Anthem.  The last few pages include a historical account, giving context for the song.

goodnight songs
Goodnight Songs
Words by Margaret Wise Brown
Illustrated by 12 Award-Winning Picture book Artists
Music by John Proutt and Emily Gary

I am working on a project to find favorite Singable Picture Books that were published in 2014.  2014 is a disappointing year for the lover (and singer) of illustrated songs.  Not that many  new were published and I spent most of the year creating my own (only marginally acceptable clip art compilations of pictures and words) books for songs I’ve desperately wanted to sing with kids in classrooms, though, in every case, I’ve been delighted with the musical tracks that Paul Raiman has made for me to sing these songs.

GOODNIGHT SONGS is a bright star in the dark night, however.  It is comprised of posthumously discovered manuscripts of songs and verse written by Margaret Wise Brown.  AMAZING!  The songs written by John Proutt and Emily Gary lovingly suit each verse.  The pictures by a constellation of marvelous illustrators are rich in color and deeply enjoyable.

Though, as person who sings illustrated songs to children in classrooms, the book leaves me CRAVING what is not offered.   Unfortunately, though I enjoy this book for it’s pictures and as a collection, I can’t use it in Sing Books visits.  Ideally, each song would get it’s own illustrated book, with a picture for every idea or line in the text so that the child can turn pages and enjoy more pictures and text in smaller chunks.  When singing to children in classes, they would get tired of looking at one single illustration for the whole song.  It would also be terrific for teachers, librarians, and children at home to have a CD which includes a vocal sing-along for each song (like is offered in this book), but ALSO an instrumental track so teachers and children can sing-along themselves. Kids would love to hear their teachers sing the song and children would get so much (confidence, independent learning, out loud singing & reading practice) out of singing THEMSELVES with the songs.

Amy Gary, the editor of the Margaret Wise Brown Estate, who got this collection published, writes in the introduction that she was sorting through a trunk of previously unpublished material by MWB and that “the trunk also contained musical scores of Margaret’s words put to music.”  Margaret Wise Brown’s sister explained that “near the end of her life Margaret had become focused on writing songs for children.  As she listened to children go about their lives, she realized that they made up songs about whatever it was they were doing at the time.  She wanted to capture that spirit in her songs…During what turned out to be her last year, Margaret traveled to France on a book tour.  She was under contract to create songs for a new children’s record company…Her collaborators were some of the best-known singers and songwriters of her day, including Burl Ives and Rosemary Clooney.”

My question is, where are THOSE songs?  Where are books with verse AND music written by Margaret Wise Brown?  Where are the books with songs written by some of the best-known songwriters of MWB’s day and that would have been sung by Burl Ives and Rosemary Clooney?  Oooooo!!!  The very thought of it sends me WAY WAY over the Goodnight Moon!!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, Amy Gary (editor of Margaret Wise Brown Estate) and Sterling Publishing, PLEASE make individual books for each of these songs (especially the ones with music by the “best-known songwriters” of MWB’s day, those which would have been sung by Rosemary Clooney!) and please include a CD with vocal sing-along track AND instrumental.  Doing so would greatly enrich the lives of many children and would give teachers, librarians, and caregivers marvelous musical, literary treats to share.

My daughter was reading a book of short stories and one of them was about a daughter of the Mad Hatter.  One of the other characters in the story was said to be singing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Shrew,” though the author did not offer the lyrics.  Having studied, sung, adapted and performed a full collection of songs based on the Twinkle Tune, and being smitten with it, I took it as a sign to write a new verse:

GARDEN SING-ALONG
A list of songs to inspire us to look around us in a garden and enjoy, observe, appreciate and preserve the natural world around us

http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2014/04/03/garden-sing-along-song-choices-for-singable-expeditions-at-tuckahoe-elementary-or-for-any-garden-sing-along/

Just realized I’d not published the songs we sang for the school week of 10/21-10/24, 2014.  On 10/24, poor me got very sick while visiting Baltimore with my friend Cindy.  Ugh!  It’s taken until just the last couple days to feel well again.  I missed two full weeks of Sing Books performances.  It was heartbreaking to cancel them.

It feels GREAT to be back in the saddle again!  And I did try to use the time wisely and got to make a few illustrations for songs I’ve long wanted to share the the children in classrooms, including:

*
The marvelous PAUL RAIMAN of http://www.myrehearsalpianist.com put together a wonderful sing-along for me, using this’s and that’s from a couple arrangements and playing it all in my key.  I’m so excited about it!  What a wonderful song:

10/21-10/24, 2014, I got to visit the classes of Ms. Morgan (K), Ms. Harris (K), Ms. Risutek (1), Ms. George (1), Ms. Hissong (1), Ms. Everett (K), Ms. Campbell (K), Ms. Sackett (1), Ms. Mason (K)!  In many classes, I was brave and brought along my guitar to Tuckahoe Elementary and  Timber Lane Elementary

Titles here are listed in no particular order.  Maybe we can notice things that we’d not before.  Sooooo many wonderful songs to sing!
