Sing Books with Emily, the Blog

Archive for the ‘Nursery Rhymes and Mother Goose’ Category

I drove away from my visit to Lake Ridge Neighborhood Library today absolutely floating on Cloud 9.  It was such a fun morning of singing with old friends and new.

Here’s what we sang (listed in alpha order),

PUT-Banner

My daughter Eloise wanted to start a movement to remove litter from our communities,

So we created Project PUT: Pick Up Trash (and put it where it belongs, in the recycle or a designated trash receptacle),

All you have to do is pledge to not litter and to Pick Up Trash whenever you can:

We got recognition from the author of the new picture book about the song MY COUNTRY TIS OF THEE, who is hosting the the My Country Tis of Thee Music Project, for our Project PUT Theme song!

For the last few summers, I’ve gotten the huge delight of visiting libraries in Virginia’s Prince William County Library System.

The 2014 summer reading program theme is  PAWS TO READ, with an adorable dog illustration on the front cover of the publication.

This is a list of Illustrated Songs with dogs in the lyrics and/or illustrations.

Tuckahoe Elementary School conducts a silent auction fund raiser every couple of years.  I was honored to donate a Sing Books with Emily performance to the auction and this event was the fulfillment of that donation.

This birthday party performance was purchased by someone I know, so that was quite a delight.  This whole list of songs was expertly and marvelously selected by a bright 4 year old!  I had such a terrific time sharing Sing Books with his friends.  I hope he had as much fun as I did!

Here’s the list of songs we sang (listed in alphabetical order), selected by the Birthday Boy!

A limerick is short poem with a fun, often humorous, poetic structure. You can sing it, too.

**********************

All limericks can be sung to two tunes.

*
One is the tune used here to sing
There Was an Old Man with a Beard
Sing this book of limerick poems using this limerick tune which works for every limerick:

http://soundcloud.com/singbookswithemily/limerick-tune-there-was-an-old

The second is the tune we frequently associate with

I made this sheet, inspired by a wonderful experience in a classroom in January 2013 and I thought it would work great for children who were interested in writing and illustrating limericks to sing with the tune:

Illustration/writing sheets that kids used for drawing pictures and writing sentences, I made up this printable version:

*
illustration and verse sheet
SBWE Verse and Illustration Sheet

illustration and verse sheet

In Sing Books, we frequently talk about folk songs which have changed over time.  People have used the tune for their own purposes.  Lyrics for songs like “Yankee Doodle,” “I Was Born About 10,000 Years Ago,” and “Catalina Magdelana” (to name just a few) have been added, expanded, or changed as the songs have moved through new generations.  The great folk singer-songwriter Peter Yarrow called this “The Folk Process.”

Children can use a sheet like this (or any plain sheet of paper) to write out a verse and illustrate it and then SING it!

Besides contributing to the Folk Process of existing folk songs, children can use this sheet to write a little poem and make up a tune, write limericks and sing them with the standard limerick tune, or just draw a picture and write a sentence about it.

**********************

**********************

Many poems by Mother Goose use the Limberick poetic structure and can be sung using the two tunes.
