You might remember that Willy Wonka said,
“We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams.”
The candy maker borrowed that from Arthur O’Shaughnessy’s poem, “Ode.”

It is true!  We ARE the music makers and we ARE the dreamers of dreams.  There is wonderful magic in music.  It is very exciting to share that magic (and watch it being made) when we sing together in the classrooms!

I visited the classrooms of Miss Robin (Pre. K), Ms. Harris (K), Ms. George (1), Ms. Resutek (1), Ms. Hissong (1), Ms. Sackett (1), Mr. Koppelman (2), Mr. Grasso (3), Ms. Coffman (3), Ms. Strickland (3) at Tuckahoe Elementary School and Timber Lane Elementary School.

A little bit of magic happened in Ms. Harris’ class.  We sang The Bird Lullaby in her class this week and when I was packing up an adorable little fella came up to me and said, “Mrs. G, will you please tell me about that bird song?  Because I am a scientist and I study birds.”

We sang a selection of songs from the following list (in mostly alpha order) in each class:

Ms Anctil asked me to join them in a class sing-along.  My daughter Eloise had Ms. Anctil for Kindergarten and I still treasure Elois’s MY SONG AND POETRY NOTEBOOK that Ms. Anctil’s lucky students compiled throughout the year, and the lucky kids in her current class have just begun compiling theirs.

The page the children were working on was for a song called I AM SPECIAL to but sung to the tune of FRERE JACQUES.  Which is extra fun because any song set to the tune of FRERE JACQUES can be sun in a round, which is what I got to do with the class.

This is how it goes:

I AM SPECIAL
Sing to the tune of Frere Jacques

I am special,
I am special
If you look, you will see
Someone very special
Someone very special
It is me, it is me!!

This is an excellent example of using a song to spur emergent reading skills.  The words are easy to sing to the familiar tune and learn by listening, but then the child can match the words already known to the words seen printed on the page.

Humming the song over and over in my head, I’ve slightly changed the lyrics to suit my own needs (that’s the FOLK WAY!),

THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN
Traditional Words and Tune Adapted by Emily Gleichenhaus for SBWE

There was an old woman tossed up in a basket
Seventeen times as high as the moon
And what she was doing, I just had to ask it
For in her hand, she carried a broom

“Old woman, old woman, old woman,” said I
“Whither O whither O whither so high?”
“To sweet the cobwebs out of the sky
And you can come with me
Aye, by and by.”

**********************
Emily’s thoughts about what is going on:

The movie in my head goes like this, I’m walking along in the night when a shadow crosses the bright full moon and causes me to look up.  A friendly looking witch is up high in the air and she is waving around a broom.  I ask her, “What are you doing up there so high in the air?”  She responds, “I’m sweeping all these cobwebs (you might think they’re clouds) out of the sky so they won’t block the light of the moon.”  I tell her that what she is doing looks like fun and ask if I might have a go at it.”  She says, “You can come with me, aye, by and by.”

Lyrics as recorded in The Real Mother Goose

Like many rhymes, the words to this one vary a bit from place to place.

I like the way these, from The Real Mother Goose, fall together:

THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN TOSSED UP IN A BASKET
(Also called OLD WOMAN, OLD WOMAN)
Traditional Words and Tune

There was an old woman tossed up in a basket,
Seventeen times as high as the moon:
But where she was going, no mortal could tell,
For under her arm she carried a broom.

“Old woman, old woman, old woman,” said I
“Whither, oh whither, oh whither so high?”
“To sweep the cobwebs from the sky;
And I’ll be with you by-and-by.”

**********************

Lyrics as recorded in Wee Sing Nursery Rhymes and Lullabies

THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN
Traditional Words and Tune

There was an old woman tossed up in a basket,
Seventeen times as high as the moon;
And where she was going I couldn’t but ask it,
For in her hand she carried a broom.

“Old woman, old woman, old woman,” said I
“Whither, oh whither, oh whither so high?”
“To sweep the cobwebs from the sky.”
“May I go with you?”
“Aye,  by and by.”

Traditional Words and Tune Adapted by Emily Gleichenhaus for SBWE

Seventeen times as high as the moon
And what she was doing, I just had to ask it

“Whither O whither O whither so high?”
“To sweet the cobwebs out of the sky
And you can come with me
Aye, by and by.”
