Humming the song over and over in my head, I’ve slightly changed the lyrics to suit my own needs (that’s the FOLK WAY!),

THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN
Traditional Words and Tune Adapted by Emily Gleichenhaus for SBWE

There was an old woman tossed up in a basket
Seventeen times as high as the moon
And what she was doing, I just had to ask it
For in her hand, she carried a broom

“Old woman, old woman, old woman,” said I
“Whither O whither O whither so high?”
“To sweet the cobwebs out of the sky
And you can come with me
Aye, by and by.”

**********************
Emily’s thoughts about what is going on:

The movie in my head goes like this, I’m walking along in the night when a shadow crosses the bright full moon and causes me to look up.  A friendly looking witch is up high in the air and she is waving around a broom.  I ask her, “What are you doing up there so high in the air?”  She responds, “I’m sweeping all these cobwebs (you might think they’re clouds) out of the sky so they won’t block the light of the moon.”  I tell her that what she is doing looks like fun and ask if I might have a go at it.”  She says, “You can come with me, aye, by and by.”

Lyrics as recorded in The Real Mother Goose

Like many rhymes, the words to this one vary a bit from place to place.

I like the way these, from The Real Mother Goose, fall together:

THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN TOSSED UP IN A BASKET
(Also called OLD WOMAN, OLD WOMAN)
Traditional Words and Tune

There was an old woman tossed up in a basket,
Seventeen times as high as the moon:
But where she was going, no mortal could tell,
For under her arm she carried a broom.

“Old woman, old woman, old woman,” said I
“Whither, oh whither, oh whither so high?”
“To sweep the cobwebs from the sky;
And I’ll be with you by-and-by.”

Lyrics as recorded in Wee Sing Nursery Rhymes and Lullabies

THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN
Traditional Words and Tune

There was an old woman tossed up in a basket,
Seventeen times as high as the moon;
And where she was going I couldn’t but ask it,
For in her hand she carried a broom.

“Old woman, old woman, old woman,” said I
“Whither, oh whither, oh whither so high?”
“To sweep the cobwebs from the sky.”
“May I go with you?”
“Aye,  by and by.”

http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2014/09/03/singable-and-music-inspired-picture-books-of-authorillustrator-jackie-morris/

I’ve been working to create song sheets for each of the songs that use the most familiar twinkly tune and assembled links to each on in a single post to serve like a catalog:
MANY SONGS, ONE TWINKLY TUNE
Twinkle, ABC, Baa are only 3 of the many songs that use the same familiar tune
http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2009/12/17/abc-twinkle-star-baa-blacksheep-singable-books-and-all-the-fix-ins-and-a-youre-adorable-too/

Using the same straight forward chords for TWINKLE LITTLE BAT didn’t seem quite right.  It’s a little creepy this song, since it is sung at the slightly creepy and off kilter Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.  I decided to change a few of the chords put it off center a little, like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it’s fun to sing for being slightly uncomfortable.

A FUNNY, SCINTILLATING, CONFOUNDING OBFUSCATION
It was fun to find this online and decipher the obfuscation of the famous TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR

Read the original TWINKLE poem (first published in 1806 by Jane Taylor) on the Poetry Foundation website:
http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/171955

It will be fun to sing, too!

SCINTILLATE SCINTILLATE GLOBULE VIVIFIC
Obfuscation of Traditional Words and Tune

Scintillate, scintillate, globule vivific
Fain would I fathom thy nature specific
Loftily poised in the ether capacious
Strongly resembling a gem carbonaceous!

When torrid Phoebus removeth his presence
Ceasing to lamp us with fierce incandescence
Then you illumine the regions supernal
Scintillate, scintillate semper nocturnal.

The traveler on lusterless peregrination
Gratefully hails your minute coruscation
He could not determine his journey’s direction
But for your bright scintillating protection.

ZYXs, an Illustrated Song
http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2014/08/11/zyxs-an-illustrated-song/

It is fun to sing the ABC Song backwards, the ZYXs, and finish it off with “Next time let’s all go to Texas.”  The kids (and adults) always laugh!

It’s fun to “Start at the very beginning” (or the very ending) and sing the ZYX’s at “Sing Books with Emily” gatherings.

Addendum, March 2011

After a conversation with the wonderful teacher Ms. Antil about using the American Sign Language Alphabet to help kids learn their ABCs and using the hand signs as an interesting activity I made poster cards to help kids learn their American Sign Language Alphabet with ABC and ZYX poster cards:

ZYXs WITH ASL ALPHABET SIGNS AND GUITAR CHORDS

This song sheet for the ZYXs has a lot going for it, embodying much history and information.  It’s fun to explore something seemingly simple which opens many doors!

I first heard Ralph Covert sing the ZYX’s on his album “Ralph’s World,” at the end of the ABC song, Track 14.

Addendum: 4/30/2012

I think it’s fun to tell the kids that, “We’re going to start at the very ending…” and then after we sing the ZYXs, I say, “OK, now we’re going to sing the ZYXs backwards. Can anyone tell me what that is?” And someone will say, “The ABCs” and they’ll think that is funny. I love it every time!
