GIRL SCOUT SONGS FOR TROOP 2740

colonial singer
Picture taken from Fireside Book of Favorite American Songs

1607-1776 is the Colonial Period as defined by Tuckahoe Elementary where my children attended (many thanks to Ms. Payne for help with the dates).  In the fourth grade, the children begin an in depth study of the Colonial Period which culminates in huge event called Colonial Day in which the children dress up as costumed interpreters of the Colonial Period and participate in many activities and demonstrations.

My family has visited Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia many times.  On one visit we went to one of the homes and learned how people enjoyed music in their homes.  I’ll always remember the costumed interpreter making the point that for most of human history, if people wanted music, they had to make it themselves.

musician's table c 1760 Henri de la Porte
The Musician’s Table, c. 1760, by Henri de la Porte

We have since attended many wonderful performances and musical studies at Colonial Williamsburg, and of course we intend to attend many more.  We are lucky to also live in the vicinity of and visit other historical Colonial locations including Jamestown, Yorktown, Poplar Forest, Montpelier, Michie Tavern, Mount Vernon Estate and Mill, Carlysle House and other sites in Old Town Alexandria, and other cities like Washington DC, Philadelphia and New York which offer rich opportunities to explore our Colonial and Revolutionary past.  As my musical experience and collection grows on this subject, this list will, too, evolve over time.  It will long be a work in progress.

Most of the songs in this list were written in (or close to) the Colonial Era (1607-1776).  These are songs (music, words or both) that Colonial citizens would likely have sung, played or known of.  Also included are contemporary songs about the events at that time, and songs of the stirring Revolution.  You will also find songs in here which depict events of the colonization and exploration of what are now the United States and Canada by other European powers.

What fun to share these songs with children and put the songs within the Colonial context.

I love making music in Sing Books visits every day and you can make music and experience Colonial Traditions, too, by singing these songs:

You can hear a clip of Lynn Ahrens singing The Preamble, on Track 4 of this link:

Pgs. 308-354 of this book , in a section called “The Promised Land,” include Colonial Songs before 1776.  In addition, many songs in the section called “Independence – On to the West, From 1776″ also includes songs known to the colonists that also pre-date 1776.

Over Thanksgiving 2013, my family made a trip to wonderful Colonial Williamsburg and got to attend Dean Shostak’s Crystal Concert at the Kimball Theatre in Williamsburg’s Market Square during which he played his own custom made replica of Benjamin Franklin’s Glass Armonica.  Mr. Shostack is on of only a handful of people on the globe who play this interments.
