Mo and I were hanging out together this morning and I showed him a cool item on Pinterest of “British Birds Made of Lego.”
He blurted out a little verse and tune: ”Little birdie sings a song, little birdie goes dong-dong.”
He was a little embarrassed about it. But something new came to him and he continued on and we typed his song and sang his little composition into a scratch recording. I think it is adorable and lots of fun!

LITTLE BIRDIE
Word and Music by Mo Gleichenhaus (2/3/2013)
Little birdie sings a song
Little birdie goes dong-dong.
Then he goes around and sings:
Won’t you come and pet my wings -
If you let me free to fly
I’ll bring you a blueberry pie.

I just love my son’s little poem and tune. I love that the little bird is singing even though he’s in a cage and that the bird dreams of flying free. I love that the bird uses affection to draw the person in, asking for a little pet which the keeper likely wants to give the bird since wanting to do such things is usually why a person has a pet in the first place. I love how when the bird has drawn his keeper to him, the bird sweetly asks for what the bird really wants and needs – which is to fly free. But the bird also loves his keeper, so he offers to bring him a reward for granting the request.
I’ve not confirmed this, but I think that this sweet little tune can be sung as a round.
Also, some lovely accompaniment can be written for this. Without even knowing it, Mo made up some nice little harmonies for the song when he sang it with me on the scratch recording.

Addendum, May 2013
My friend interviewed me for American Food Roots Online Magazine about my experience with pie growing up in Indiana.
I sing Mo’s Song “Little Birdie” (in which the little birdie offers blueberry pie) at the end of the 2 min. video:
