Singable Picture Book Spotlight, 6/18/2012 (Westover Library Finds)

Posted on: July 21, 2012

I love our local Westover Branch Library in Arlington, VA.  A little browsing the other day and I left with 3 singable picture books that were new to me.

The Babysitter Sings
Text by Phillis Gershator
Illustrated by Melisande Potter
This book is written in verse, so it is possible to find a tune for the text itself, but the text is peppered (as is explained in the Author’s Note) with “slumber-song images from Africa, Spain, and the Caribbean [and]…Nigerian nursery songs and lullabies.”

Bread is for Eating
Words and Music by David Gershator
Musical Arrangement by Yonah Gershator
Text by David and Phillis Gershator
Illustrated by Emma Shaw-Smith
This book is featured in a Reading Rainbow Video:

(A spoken performance of the book begins at about 4 minutes into the video. You can hear the song at about 4 minutes and 16 seconds into the video.)

Feliz Navidad (Teach Me…Learning Songs & Traditions in Spanish)
Traditional Words and Tunes by Various Artists
Text by Anna Maria Mahoney
Illustrated by Barb Bjornson
