Sing Books with Emily, the Blog

Archive for July 2012

I was thrilled to find this link to posts on the blog, “The Art of Children’s Picture Books,” which has images of all Mr. Wildsmith’s “From A to Z” cards.  Wonderful!

These are a few examples…feast your eyes on those colors!  I absolutely love these!

Brian Wildsmith is one of my favorite of all illustrators.  I love his use of paint, color, shape and material.  I love that he’s a little wild (as his name would hint to), and I love the subjects he chooses to illustrate.  Luckily, a few of his works are singable.

Lois Lenski was incredibly prolific, writing and illustrating scores of books for children, many of which included songs.  I’ve not done an official counting, but I believe Lois Lenski gets the prize for the most Singable Picture Books by a single author/illustrator (with a great deal of help from her frequent collaborator Clyde R. Bulla)

“The Composer is Dead,” is, in my humble opinion, a wonderful book (hilarious, witty, and deceptively educational) which embraces music as an indispensable element of what makes life good.  In my book, it’s right up there with Leonard Bernstein’s narration of “Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” (for which, sadly, I’ve not yet discovered an illustration) and Ogden Nash’s poems for Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals.”

(This book comes in a bunch of editions…some are smaller format paperbacks packaged with a 2-track vocal and sing-along CD, some come in HUGE format boardbook, or large format paper back.  Whichever format you choose, this one is cute and fun to sing with the little ones and the tune and lyrics have been adapted for other songs.  So once you learned this one, you’re on your way to knowing a host of others, too.)

A video with, what I gather is, the tune used for singing this song in the UK.
A sweet tune and arrangement and, thankfully, not cheesy at all.

FIVE LITTLE DUCKS
Traditional Words and Music

Five little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only four little ducks came back.

Four little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only three little ducks came back.

Three little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only two little ducks came back.

Two little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only one little duck came back.

One little duck
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But none of the five little ducks came back.

No little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
The sad mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
Then all of the five little ducks came back.
